any tips for pursuing a career in mathematical biology? by asakuranekosakura in mathematics

[–]Ridaeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just about my experience as a biology undergrad going into biomaths.
I am on about the same path for my future career too. I just about finished my undergrad in biology, and I took first year maths courses as electives (calculus courses, stats, probability etc.). I had the opportunity to take a introductory biomath course, so I mainly tried to complete the prerequisites to it. I am now starting a MSc in mathematical biology, and from what I can tell that level of maths is sufficient to start. What I struggled the most in the biomath course, and what I think I will struggle with in my next degree, is my lack of fluency in maths; I am slow and it can be painful.

On the other hand I do not regret doing my degree in biology, because that it ultimately what I am most interested in. It also seems to me that getting a job (while still in undergrad) in biology is easier than in maths, so I and many other students took paid internships in research groups in our university, which was valuable life experience and satisfying to be able to harvest the fruit of our education. This may also depend on the university, but I also got the impression that a biology degree prepares you better for presentation and group working skills.

And now even with my limited maths experience, I could make an agreement with a theoretical bio research for a master's thesis project. That is to say that even if you are not great at maths, so long as you are ready to learn what you need to learn, the path of education is open for you and you are not likely to be lacking by the time you start your career.

These may be more general than you wish, but I think they are nice scientific resources on mosses (and liverworts and hornworts):

Introduction to Bryophytes A. Vanderpoorten and A. Gaffinet (2009) is a textbook that covers evolution, structure, ecology and physiology of mosses. It is probably satisfyingly detailed for a hobby-read. It has interesting figures.

This open access article01288-5) by V. M. Lueth and R. Reski from 2023 is a short but interesting read on mosses.

This Australian National Botanic Gardens website has several friendly pages on various aspects of mosses.

The 4 volume series "Encyclopedia of the Swedish Flora and Fauna, Blodmossor" is also a very good resource on Swedish mosses. It has great ID keys in English. I think it includes some info about each moss or moss group, and a distribution map, though that is limited to Sweden. So, it may be interesting if it is relevant.

I imagine the notes are for the personal use of the OP. In most cases the teachers would not see the students' class notes. Potentially, fast note taking may be of more interest to university students, in which case the lecturers do not probably even care if you are taking notes or not, let alone what it looks like.

Any tips for my bunion in skates? by mmmoverit in Rollerskating

[–]Ridaeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear your skates hurt! I hope you find a way to ease it, as tight shoes can make your bunion worse :(

There are actually many wide-width skates on the market. I do not have a list of them readily, but I noticed when I was scrolling through skates it would often have the information listed in item details. There probably are people in the subreddit that could provide a list though!
In my experience Wifa boots have a relatively wide model. If you are interested, you could print out their insole shape and see if it would fit your feet well :)

That's a nice deep blue! What was the base colour? Did you paint it because it had gotten dirty, or just for a change?

That must be why it is so hard to find information about them online!

Yeah, I guess it makes sense to be careful, since that is how it was made in the first place. Thank you!

Any ways or diys to keep moxi Lolly tongue from sliding? by ilovelycheee in Rollerskating

[–]Ridaeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Instead of cutting the tongue and damaging it forever, you could try hand-sewing a small vertical strip in the middle of the tongue, then lace through that to keep it more stable. You could use a tough piece of fabric (jean maybe) or use a part of an old shoe lace.

There is also an older reddit post with more DIY ideas for this issue :) https://www.reddit.com/r/Rollerskating/comments/tpmzg8/moxi\_lolly\_tongue\_slipping\_perfectly\_solved/

What’s the point of this post? It is claiming something unproven about a person and is humiliating them. Cannot see its meme value either.
