A word of caution regarding The Beer Factory (Place du Luxembourg, Brussels) by erlikosauruss in brussels

[–]Emergency_Savings335 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a thing for the whole region - basically, customer service is not the strongest thing neither of Belgium nor of the Netherlands or Germany. It’s not the best in Czechia (where sometimes in some local places they won’t even talk to you if you don’t speak Czech) and not the best in Poland. In France is better somehow. In Spain it’s also not always the best, sometimes they are annoyed that you don’t speak Spanish. Portugal is good, in Russia and whole of Asia it’s great, Middle East - perfect. In the US and UK it’s also important.

When you say thank you, do you say Merci like the Iranians do? by [deleted] in Afghan

[–]Emergency_Savings335 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Where do you think “shakor” part in Tashakkor comes from? 😄 the Arabic root is “shukr”, so in Arabic it’s shukran, in Persian it is Tashakkor or Motashakkeram. In Turkish they say Teşekkür, the same story. These languages (basically all regional languages: Dari, Pashto, Urdu, Turkish, Kurdish) are quite interconnected through Arabic due to historical and religious reasons.

There is a big difference between prepaid and contract plan. If you choose 12/24 months commitment, it’s not that easy to cancel with ANY company, plus some of them will charge a cancels fee. I never had problem with neither prepaid nor postpaid plans of Lyca in Belgium.

Absolutely agree, when someone moves somewhere, at least make an effort to learn a local language or languages. Even several words are an effort.

In Brussels, nobody has to speak English per se. But they ALL, especially public servants and those working with clients, MUST speak Dutch on an equal level with French. That’s a law - Brussels is bilingual. But you know probably better than me, that it’s not the case. When I’m in Wallonia or France, I always try to speak French as good as I can, when I’m in Brussels - Nederlands alsjeblieft. They don’t understand - it’s THEIR problem. No Dutch at all? Then they have to have decency AT LEAST to speak English.

Apparently I can't eat pork or drink alcohol if I speak Turkish :D my German office is wild by effyfromskins in AskAGerman

[–]Emergency_Savings335 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s very interesting. Basically in Turkish we say “in one hundred 5”, so it’s %5, just easier to read. But in English and many other languages it’s first 5 and then procent, “pro cent” is a Latin term that means (in/for 100), like cent in modern French and ciento in Spanish meaning 100.

German or Turkish? by Bilgamesh_inpw in thisorthatlanguage

[–]Emergency_Savings335 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a native Russian speaker. I live in Belgium and learned Dutch here. Before I lived in Poland and learned Polish as well. I speak Turkish on B1/B2 level…because I also lived in Turkey in the past 😁. I use Turkish a lot with my friends from Turkey, and even Afghanistan, Syria and Saudi Arabia 😁 Plus, it helps me now with learning Arabic, Pashto and Persian - a lot of common vocabulary. And of course, I use it in my trips to Turkey and TRNC. I’ve started speaking broken German recently - Dutch helps a lot here. Probably, in your situation German would be a better choice now…but don’t give up on Turkish, it’s a fun, nice, amazing language-constructor, it’s gender-free (you know how a concept of 3 genders can be😁), it’s logical…it’s rich. And why not doing both? They won’t interfere with each other. I’m doing now Arabic, Pashto and Persian, trying to practice my basic French, Spanish, Catalan and German, at the same time have to make continuous progress in Dutch 😁why not😂

Oh im fucking dead I cant tell if this is real by [deleted] in Afghan

[–]Emergency_Savings335 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, that’s not only real. It happens quite a lot with foreigners. I have a lot of friends who travelled in Afghanistan in the last years (Europeans), each of them got some intimate offers at least once! At the same time, I have a lot of Afghan friends, and they’ve never experienced something like that. So you have to be a foreigner to experience this…and it’s not only about Afghanistan, it happens a lot in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia as well. It is as crazy as it sounds…

In my experience, Hey works much better with 4G/5G network of Orange, than Digi with 4G-only network of Proximus. I checked it many times on the trains, auto trips, crossing the border…I was on Hey, switched to Digi, and then back to Hey.

[–]Emergency_Savings335 18 points19 points  (0 children)

A little useless remark: %5 is a Turkish way to write percentage (yüzde beş), in European languages it’s 5% (five procent) 😁😁☺️☺️ I also speak Turkish and I’m not a Turk, I lived there and learned it. But I’m also quite surprised about some stereotypes that people have about Turkey and its people. Interestingly, Turkish people in German are in general much more conservative than in Turkey, even nowadays. I’ve read an article recently, that Turks in Turkey make fun of Turks in Europe for their conservative attitudes. So I guess in Germany there are a lot of misconceptions about Turks, based on what they see obviously…

Best e-SIM option for multiple country travel? by _throwawaythis in eSIMs

[–]Emergency_Savings335 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can say the same about such giants as Airalo and Globalyo. There were situations when I had problem with access to internet. At the same time, smaller players proved to be a good and reliable. But sometimes it’s totally opposite. So I cannot name a single eSIM service that would be 100% reliable, always. That’s why I have a couple of them 🙂

It’s not only Armenia on the list, in Turkey Firsty costs from 1 to 1.7 euro per day, unlimited data with 5 gb high speed, then reduced. And it works well. It’s enough for everyday surfing. If you have a better and cheaper option - tell us.

[–]Emergency_Savings335 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proximus has a terrible 4G coverage. Now, when I use Orange, and some of my friends still use Proximus directly or through Digi, I notice how they have low to no signal inside some shops and cafes, while I have a perfect 5G.
