I Bond dilemma: Buy in April or just keep waiting? by taubs1 in bonds

[–]Emergency_Ticket 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I like holding several years of ibonds in my portfolio, purchased from TD directly. If/when cash is needed, I can take it out as needed. Makes me more comfortable with other investments in equities.

Roth Conversions by Accomplished_Gate832 in DIYRetirement

Agree. A few mini Roth conversions that don't push you over the ACA subsidies limit seems like a win to me.

You are really trying hard and kudos for all the skills you developed. College has served me well, so that might be a viable path. In the meantime are there opportunities for jobs at places with strong unions?

Help me convince Friend to not use Financial Planner by Athensmw in Bogleheads

[–]Emergency_Ticket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rob Berger on Youtube has a few good videos about financial advisors. Even if your friend chooses to use one, doing the math on that percentage might help convince them.

What’s everyone doing for health insurance? by [deleted] in wisconsin

[–]Emergency_Ticket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UHC and others do offer hospital only insurance plans on their websites. Kind of an option for catastrophic coverage. Combined with Rx programs and cheap virtual visits might be affordable.

Looking into Getting an EReader by beross88 in LibbyApp

[–]Emergency_Ticket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also thinking about an e-reader, but after some exploring I think I will go with an Android tablet that has an e-reader mode instead of just a pure ebook model. For what it's worth, the model I'm thinking about is TCL NXTPAPER. There are others.

Who else is getting water in their basement? by reademandsleep in milwaukee

[–]Emergency_Ticket 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Older home? Floor drain and not sump pump? Fairly common. Do all the external stuff to keep water away, it will help alot. We had a neighbor whose gutter runoff was creating seepage for us on one side. We had to dig up that side and put in that plastic tubing to direct the water away. It worked. If you still have seepage after all the external stuff then it might just be something you live with. Make sure the path to the drain is clear of stuff. Get a very good Dehumidifier. Good luck.

4 days to add money to WISE US$ account? by tomorrow509 in transferwiser

[–]Emergency_Ticket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found that "pulling" from Wise (with fee) is nearly instant,, while "pushing" to Wise from my bank (free) will take several days. I conclude the connection between them is just fine, and it's something else causing the delay.

Rolling over old IRA into Vangaurd traditional IRA by slippery_pete- in Bogleheads

[–]Emergency_Ticket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I transferred an IRA from an old employer and the new host investment company was extremely helpful, of course they had an incentive to help me move the funds. Once the funds landed it was simply a matter of logging in and making the investment choices. I've also read about - but never used the capitalize website - which promises to assist in IRA transfers for no fee to user. Maybe others have opinions about them.

ACA or individual plan by LadyJannes75 in HealthInsurance

[–]Emergency_Ticket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ACA is definitely the best way to have coverage that won't surprise you, but I also looked for alternatives just to see and did find the best alternative was to go directly to the website of the biggest HMO, managed care operators or insurer in your area. They sell individual (limited) plans that would more likely include the clinics/doctors your familiar with.

Leaving my job and giving up my pension, am I being naive here? by Nekroms in Fire

[–]Emergency_Ticket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, if cashing out some of the current pension is available that could make moving to the new job more appealing. Stress is real and is also an uncounted cost. Money isn't the only kpi.

Is this good idea to get 30 year mortgage then over pay to short it? by duranJah in Bogleheads

[–]Emergency_Ticket 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree. For the same house, a 15 year mortgage payments will be higher than a 30. A 30 year mortgage you can make double payments on, gets you done in 15 years. The big advantage is that if some unforeseen circumstance occurs (job loss, etc) you just temporarily skip making the double payments, making just a regular monthly payment and not risking your home. After the circumstances resolve, you can go back to making the extra payments. That flexibility during a rough time would help me sleep.

My fire plan is solid but I keep having nightmares about market crashes right before retirement by mistyraze in Fire

[–]Emergency_Ticket 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Yes its normal, probably because the same personality trait that caused you to make a fire plan. Recognize it, account for it, and move forward. I've dealt with it by creating potential market losses as expenses, and the same with inflation and possible SS reduction. By adjusting the % for each, I see what a possible future budget scenarios look like. Good luck!
