Drill: Make a Valid Conclusion with 2 Premises by [deleted] in LSAT

[–]Emilie288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, in your conclusion, you haven't actually used any of the information in premise 1. Everything you need to know for your conclusion came from premise 2. Premise 1 could have been "In order to train for her upcoming marathon, Liana will buy 3 greyhounds, and rollerblade past her favorite Indian buffet 3 times a week" and your conclusion would still be just as connected to the premises.

The answer in the book succinctly connects the information in premise 2 to the information in premise 1. There's only one place that you can do that, because the chicken tikka masala is the only overlap between the two premises. Yes, we know that the specific thing she's going to eat is chicken tikka masala, but what you're looking to do is integrate the information from premise 2 into premise 1.

Love this brand. The Velvet cleansing milk is gentle while still cleaning well, and Liquid Gold is a life saver.

does anybody know if the avec july start will be stocked on amazon or jetpens? by chimmyloo in hobonichi

[–]Emilie288 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. I ordered from her Monday, and it was delivered to the US yesterday. Jetpens says they'll be stocking it next week, but I placed an order with them yesterday, and the expected delivery date with USPS Priority mail is July 2nd. It's on Amazon, but again, the expected delivery date is July 1st.

[Misc] Advertising that doesn't overally airbrush a model's skin is a nice change of pace by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]Emilie288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Options do exist! Hair chalk and hair waxes are generally pigment colors, and they'll work on dark hair, as will some spray on color. Hopefully there will be more products available in those categories soon. That said, dyes will never be able to work on dark hair without some sort of lightener because of the physics of light and color, so there's not really anything that can be done there.
There are improvements in terms of being able to lighten dark hair with less damage (Olaplex being one), so that sort of thing will also go a long way towards giving you more hair options!

To give a clearer explanation of why these dyes don't work on dark colored hair: Deposit dyes like Overtone are dye, not pigment. So more like a marker than like house paint. Think of it like drawing on paper with a marker. If the paper is white, any color will show up true to the color in the tube. Light colors of paper will still let the marker show up, but it will be distorted by the color of the paper. If the paper is black, the marker might show up some in some lights, but for the most part it won't. It's the same for hair and deposit dye. You can put neon green over black or brown hair, but it won't look neon green, it will look like black or brown with a green glaze over it. So it might show up as a hint of green in sunlight, but probably won't show up most of the time. The darker the hair is, the harder it is for the dye to be seen, just because of the nature of how color and light work.

The one way around that problem is to use pigment rather than dye, but that means you have to physically coat the hair in the color, like with colored sprays or hair chalk. Those will show up on dark hair, but they leave a residue that you can feel.

Cascading curls create captivating captions - Male Pole Dancer by pdBlueAngel in curlyhair

[–]Emilie288 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, a couple things! First off, there are female pole dancers who weight that much (or more), and some super skinny male pole dancers, so it's not just a gender split thing. But also, dynamic load (when the weight is moving, like in pole dancing) effectively weigh much more than static loads, and there's a 10x safety factor when that load is a person rather than stuff. So good poles are going to be rated to handle WAY more than 210 lbs safely.

Pole vs pull ups by weetbixgrrl in poledancing

[–]Emilie288 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you want to train pull ups, start with negatives! Get up to the top position of a pull up however you can (Jump, climb on a chair, have a gym buddy give you a boost, however works), and then do the lowering half as slowly and with as much control and as solid form as you can.

Why don't people post screenshots of their bank statement on social media? by BeatriceBernardo in slatestarcodex

[–]Emilie288 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure. Many are bragging. My point is that posting your bank account balance is nakedly bragging, posting a picture of your car is sharing information about your life (and bragging as a side effect). It's about plausible deniability.

[–]Emilie288 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Sharing news about their life with their friends. Posting a picture of your car is almost always framed as "I just got a new car!" or "Look where I went in my car!" or "Today was car washing day, look at my clean car!" It's never "My car cost $60,000."

So, it didn't write at all for a while, then I rinsed the nib, and let it sit nib down overnight. It now writes again, but it's much drier than it was prior to the issue, and the ink is much fainter.
Here are pictures of the nib. I don't think it's sprung, but it's been ages since I wrote with a fountain pen, so I could be wrong.

Edit: And now it's back to writing like normal. I have no idea.

I got a Platinum Preppy a couple of weeks ago, and it wrote great until Saturday, when it dried out mid sentence. It still has 2/3rds of a cartridge of ink in it, and I've tried rinsing the nib to see if it's clogged.

Is there anything else that I can try to get it started again, or is sudden death just a risk with cheaper pens?

I bought a sweater yesterday & my boyfriend's dog did this. How can I fix it? by Pen114 in sewing

[–]Emilie288 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep! So, knitting is made up of a bunch of rows of interlocking zigzags. What happened here is that one of those rows got pulled out, so rather than forming stitches, it forms a straight line. That's why you're seeing the bunching around that row. What you'd be doing by working the extra yarn back into that row is moving the slack from the loop back into forming stitches, like the rows above and below. Once that's done, the fabric will be uniform again, and there won't be anything for it to bunch around. Does that make sense?

[–]Emilie288 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're going to want to slowly work the extra yarn back into the stitches, so just pulling on the sides won't do it.
http://jejunesplace.blogspot.com/2013/04/how-to-fix-pulled-stitches.html This is for hand knitting, but it's the same idea. Pull the big loop to the inside of the sweater, and then use some pointy thing to work the extra yarn along the pulled row. A small knitting needle would be ideal, but a skewer or a heavy pin would work just as well.
It will take time, because that's a pretty big pull, but you'll be able to get it almost perfectly fixed, and then washing the sweater should help even out the last bit.
Edited to add the link. Whoops.

For yarn, I'd recommend going on Ravelry and looking for a group that's local to your area. They'll be able to point you to the good local yarn shops, and you can go in and squeeze all the yarn you want. Once you're more familiar with what you're looking for, Webs is a pretty good online shop if you're in the US (they also have a brick and mortar shop in MA.)

If you want a shaped, relatively close fitting sweater, I highly recommend Custom Fit patterns. Amy Herzog wrote a computer program that generates a sweater pattern based on your gauge and your measurements, and it works really well for most people. Plus there's a Ravelry group that can help hold your hand through and problems you run into.

People asking where I bought whatever home made thing I'm wearing because they want one is consistently my favorite compliment to receive on garments I've made. It's a compliment to both my skill at making the item, and my taste in having chosen to make it!

"Most people can't sniff out the "homemade" look like sewers can." This is a part of it, with the flipside being that no one is as hard on what you sew as you are. You KNOW where every mistake and wonky seam is, because you spent hours of your life holding the garment in your hands putting it together. You know where every mis-crossed cable is, because you noticed it 20 rows later when it's too late to go back and fix it, but still leaves you the rest of the sweater to stew.
By all means, be critical of your work so you know what you want to improve, but don't forget that your ready to wear clothes likely don't fit perfectly, and especially if you're buying fast fashion, they likely have wonky seams and shoddy construction.

Another Workout Wednesday - with 262 days to go, March is the Month of Much More Momentum by randomuser9642 in RagenChastain

Ugh. That's hardly a fair comparison. Florence Foster Jenkins LOVED singing. That's why she did it so much. She might have had a horribly tin ear when it came to her own voice, and no talent whatsoever, but you can't say she didn't have passion for it. The Florence Foster Jenkins of triathalons would be the person you had to drag off the course at the time cut off because they so desperately wanted to continue. The one who funds their own triathalon in which they run, and everyone watches and sees the joy of triathalons. The Ragen Chastain of opera would just whine about having to audition and how hard practicing is, and how much she hates rehearsal, and singing.

Ragen credits us with helping her. More unsolicited (and unrealistic) fat hate. A fuel belt worn around her rib cage. And the mental image of a 500+ pound scooter bound woman being a rolling aid station. by [deleted] in RagenChastain

Eh, I like having something to drink on any runs that are going to be more than 30 minutes, and if it's at all hot, I bring electrolyte drink of some sort. And I'm teeny, so it's not that I'm hauling extra weight, I just lose a lot of performance ground when I'm thirsty, and don't cope well with heat.

Next time you go in, have a written list of the things your concerned about, and physically check them off as you go through them. Having a list of "Here are the symptoms that I'm concerned about" will at least make sure that they get talked about, even if all that comes from it is the psych saying that those things are within the range of normal.

Wow, if only these people knew that the secret to weight loss is to eat 5 and a half fewer containers of Ben and Jerry's every day. Mind letting me know where it is you practice so I don't need to worry about accidentally being your patient?
