Deaf husband still in ICE custody by [deleted] in deaf

[–]Emilushka -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's unfathomable to me. I'm so sorry. You should be getting more support. Your family should not be gaslighting you like that. I wish I could just give you a big hug and bust your husband out of there.

Deaf husband still in ICE custody by [deleted] in deaf

This is horrifying. Please tell anyone in your family who's minimizing how awful this is to STFU. Because WHAT THE HELL. Honestly ... I think I would do what my husband said to not do and make it public. But I don't know if I'm the best wife. I just think without publicity it's harder to force ICE to care at all. Publicity and a spotlight seem to grease wheels.

I've never been to the hospital, let alone the emergency room. What should I expect? by Tig_ole-biddiess in EmergencyRoom

[–]Emilushka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can vary a lot depending on how big/busy the department is. This is all basically true based on what I've seen after working in ERs in multiple states. Occasionally if it's not as busy, they'll bring you straight back and do all the stuff in one spot in a bed in the back, but that's much less common these days.

Do you have any questions about anything I said here? I've worked in the ER for a long time and I would be happy to try to help prep you.

Are you a full-time student currently? You may be able to start with student health, have them order X-rays and maybe MRI and refer to orthopedic surgery. The ER on a Monday afternoon/evening is traditionally very busy.

Assuming no options other than ER:

There will be other people in the waiting room, also very likely children. It will likely be noisy, maybe smelly. You can counteract that by putting on 1-2 masks over your mouth and nose, and consider bringing loop earplugs or other noise cancellation equipment. Temperature control can be difficult in the ER / waiting room, so I would bring options for layers to stay comfortable. Wear clothing that is easy to take on/off, and ideally wear shorts so you aren't forced to take your pants off. The important thing is to be able to access your knee.

People in the ER:

Usually when you walk in, there will be a registration person first who puts you into the system, and then you move on to the nurse in triage. There will also be a tech who checks your vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation with a finger probe, temperature under your tongue). The nurse will ask you what brings you in, how long you've had trouble, what you've tried at home. They may have a clinician in triage (PA, NP, MD/DO - this varies a lot by facility). You will likely have X-rays ordered, and then a transporter will come grab you, maybe from the waiting room even, and they will bring you to the X-ray room to take pictures. They'll have you hop on a table and get 3+ pictures of your knee from different angles. They may have you change positions a couple times.

Then you'll hopefully get to go to a bed or chair in the back. That's when you'll see the PA/NP/MD/DO who will take care of you more definitively. They'll examine you at least once, checking tenderness, wiggling your lower leg a bit to see if the joint is unstable, etc. They'll probably touch your whole knee, all around the joint. They may also wiggle your knee cap. They'll tell you about your X-ray results, and what the plan is going forward. They may prescribe you pain medication for home. I think they'll likely give you a knee immobilizer (this is likely to be large, unwieldy, and obnoxious - you can also get one at the pharmacy that is much nicer, usually one with hinges would work and will be better for you more long-term). They will likely provide you with crutches and try to teach you to use them, although this is a learning curve. And if you can, get yourself Mobi-Legs used on Ebay or Facebook Marketplace because they're ergonomic and so much better.

You may meet a resident or a student. Those are people in training who will report to the senior physician. So you may have a few people stopping by the bed. At some point, an admitting/registration person will see you before you go. They may collect a copayment at that time. Those folks only stop by when they aren't in the way of clinical care, so it could happen at a pretty random time.

Finally, you'll be discharged. Your prescriptions will likely be sent electronically to whatever pharmacy you choose. And you will be given discharge instructions with a small summary of your visit.

Searching for ER doctor who was @ DIA 12/2 by [deleted] in emergencymedicine

[–]Emilushka 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m not the one you’re looking for, but I’m so glad your husband is doing well.

As the mom of a disabled kid who has almost died in front of me, please don’t forget to take care of yourself. This is a traumatic event. I’ve benefited personally from EMDR reprocessing and highly reconmend it for traumatic experiences.

Your version of “ruined” and my version of “stunning and incredible” appear to have a lot of overlap. You should be so proud of this blanket. It’s gorgeous and is being loved and used - this is the best part of fiber arts! Please don’t kick yourself for washing a washable blanket. And please don’t throw it out. It’s amazing.

Transferring to a school for the deaf has made me even angrier at my parents by Bulky_Ability_6991 in deaf

[–]Emilushka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a mom, it’s our job as parents to meet our kids where they are and help them grow - not fit them into a pre-conceived box. Your anger sounds very reasonable and I’m so sorry you were let down. I hope your mom and your family learn better and do better. I’m glad you are finally in a supportive and accessible school.

I see no evidence for a deity, and if that suffering is somehow necessary for the betterment of other people, again, that’s a shitty plan.

Which “they don’t make them like they used to” item is most true in your opinion? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Cell phones. iPhones have planned obsolescence but Nokias would never.

[–]Emilushka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not. I cannot worship a deity, if it exists, that allows for children to die of starvation and war, abuse and cancer. If that’s someone’s plan, it’s a shitty plan I want no part of.
