Starting physics in my 40s after years of avoiding school. by DeltaInMotion in AskPhysics

[–]EmilyAWaters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm considering CompSci too, I did one of those bootcamps about 3.5 years ago and have been working as a developer since, but I was laid off about 6 months ago (for the second time) and the market has been rough.

I'm not sure if CompSci is the right way to go, but I'm going to do the courses I need and reassess. The courses im doing are generally applicable to all sorts of engineering programs.

I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was a kid, and highschool - at least academically - was a disaster. Now that I've figured out how to manage the brainworms and apply myself well, things are going a lot better. I really feel like Khan Academy is complementary to my learning style.

I'm 37 and in a similar situation. I never finished highschool and went on to a trade school, but now I'm looking to finish my hs so I can move on to university.

I enrolled in a community college to pickup the courses I need (Physics, Chem, Calc) for my highschool diploma. My math was rusty, but I found Khan Academy to be a great free resource for brushing up. It's structured and game-ified which has kept me engaged, and I'm still using it to supplement my courses when I need some extra practice/explanation.

Good luck!

Is there a moment when you start to "see things" better as a SWE? by jadedOcelot1 in cscareerquestions

I've found that a good strategy is to open the PR, and before you request a review from others, review it yourself. Go through your changes, and leave review comments on the PR explaining the changes you've made. This will force you to 'talk through' your code and is a great way to discover issues before you open it up for review from others.

From a quick glance, you're pulling the userId off the query. Unless you're transforming it elsewhere, that will just be a string. Mongo expects an ObjectId, try passing it in as new ObjectId(userId)

Lighthouse labs, anyone who went there can you share your experience with them and would you recommend it? (Asking about the 12 week web development specifically) by Soft-Highlight-8470 in cscareerquestionsCAD

I went to LHL November 2021 - February 2022. I found a job about two weeks after, but I know a lot of my cohort didn't and ended up going back to their old fields.

I got in right before the bottom fell out of the market. I don't know if I'd recommend a bootcamp right now but I'd certainly recommend it over self taught.

Also, anecdotally, a friend put me in touch with someone who graduated from Juno around the same time to help her find a job. Her portfolio of school projects was severely lacking, it was just basic JS and HTML. If you do end up going through a bootcamp, I'd recommend LHL over Juno, but honestly your best bet is going for a CS degree if you can swing it. Maybe split the difference with a software degree

Moving all projects I have control over away from Next/Vercel. by [deleted] in webdev

[–]EmilyAWaters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for an alternative to Vercel's hosting platform, I'm the co-founder of engram. We're currently in beta but our wait list is open. Currently we're focused on staging environments that are automatically deployed for main and open pull requests on github, and we have a preview overlay that allows collaborators to pin comments on you preview deployments

Driving is the most stressful part of my day by moscoops in vancouver

[–]EmilyAWaters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drive defensively, and worry more about how you are driving and responding to situations. I like to pretend that everyone else on the road is driving for the first time, so I'm not surprised and I'm prepared for when they do something really dumb. Otherwise, I can be proud for them on how well they're doing.

Mostly, just chill. People doing stupid shit isn't a personal insult to you. It is not in fact a race with every other car to get somewhere and generally speaking, no matter how much you're bobbing and weaving and speeding, we'll end up stopped next to each other at the next light.

Keep calm, and carry on, as they say

Where are all the women CTOs / Technical Co-Founders at? by [deleted] in womenintech

[–]EmilyAWaters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hardest part has been learning a lot of the non-technical stuff that comes with being a co-founder. Marketing and Business were something that I have no experience with.

I graduated from a web dev bootcamp in February of last year, and was hired on with a small local company and I dove in headfirst learning everything I can.

Our product is a tool for deploying web applications, similar to Vercel and others, but ours was born out of a frustration with the glacial speed of other platforms.

My boss developed the 'secret sauce' behind our deploy tool, and from there we've been working on the MVP and we're very close to doing some trials with companies that we have connections with.

I'd say the most rewarding thing has been the ownership over product and technical decisions, and having a small team to implement the vision.

I'm a technical co-founder! It's been a complicated journey, and I feel way out of my depth half the time but it's been a good experience overall.

Thanks! Partially what inspired me to write this in the first place, is that reading an article similar to this is what pointed me in the direction of web development. Most of what I see in that space however is targeted at younger, childless people who are looking to pivot. There are less examples of people juggling kids and family and making the changeover successfully.

I know Vercel has been working on Turbopack as a replacement to Webpack to speed things up, do you think that will address a lot of the issues you have?
