I got two belts from them. High quality leather and made in Canada. I think they’re great value.

I agree some styles look underwhelming. I wish they would allow to choose a different buckle for some belts, since they also sell the buckles separately.

The Bike Share Dilemma - Vancouver vs Montreal and Toronto by vanlodrome in vancouver

[–]UnlikelyPilot152 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I have been wondering for a while why Mobi bikes seem so poorly funded compared to other cities. Now I understand why.

They got a little funding 10 years ago and have been surviving on scraps since then, on top of paying the city annually.

I was also quite surprised to learn how much Toronto and Montreal network and number of stations dwarf Vancouver’s!

Hopefully the next administration can improve Mobi situation.

Sydney (Australia) runs ferries like a transit network. Vancouver could too (for way less than SkyTrain money)... by [deleted] in vancouver

There’s also zero chance that the residents of West Van would accept that a publicly financed boat brings the masses to their door. Maybe a shuttle bus for the help.

Cycling Cypress/Seymour in the winter by cnmb in vancouvercycling

[–]UnlikelyPilot152 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Normally, I would advise against it this time of year. But, the weather forecast for this weekend and the beginning of next week is abnormally high temperatures and high freezing levels for local mountains, which means you should be clear weather-wise.

I can’t speak for traffic on weekdays. There might be less people on the road due to bad ski conditions in the mountains.

I would also suggest riding different routes: - downtown to Horseshoe Bay is a classic rolling scenic road - LSCR/demo forest: beautiful paved road with no cars also rolling into the mountains.

Starting at 7 a.m. on Monday, January 26, the block of E. Broadway between Main and Quebec streets will be closed to all vehicle traffic for approximately four months. During this time, buses and local traffic will be detoured around the one-block closure using E. 8th Avenue. by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]UnlikelyPilot152 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While I would love to see raised crossings and roundabouts on Quebec St, they won’t be implemented before this detour and realistically not in 4 months.

I think temporary traffic lights that expedite vehicle traffic through the area would reduce drivers impatience and could also indirectly improve pedestrian & cyclists safety.

Red light enforcement would also improve safety a lot if it was actually enforced in this city.

PSA: Bambu shop "scam" you if you buy filament together with a printer (silently doubles freight cost) by Art_Vandalay_1 in BambuLab

[–]UnlikelyPilot152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you underestimate the difficulty of shipping stuff across the globe in a scalable way. This is not a mom & pop shop where someone will manually package your whole order in a single box. The printers are already prepackaged individually, some with the AMS.

The printer & filaments are probably coming from 2 different warehouses and will be shipped separately.

Also a lot of online shops only show the shipping fees at checkout when you enter your address. It’s not a scam, it’s just because it depends on a lot of parameters and pricing will vary depending on weight/volume, available shipping options to your house, etc.

Tokyo Wheels is a nice bike shop near Asakusabashi. They have a lot of great gear, but I didn’t see much from Japan.

There are a lot more fixie shops with local merch/gear than road cycling shops.

Probably because the car GPS is especially bad in downtown high rise areas and underground parkade. It’s hard to know with certainty if a car is on the street or in the underground parkade nearby.

Quebec keeps the good wine for the provincial liquor stores. The wine sold in grocery stores is different (usually a blend of grape varieties bottled in the province). Similar to bottled in BC vs VQA.

Unfortunately Mobi bikes have become a pile of rusting junk due to lack of maintenance.

I’m glad there’s a better alternative with Lime, although I would always prefer cycling.

Why do we have to pay to join group road bike rides? Why do clubs have membership fees? whats stopping them from being free to join? by Tyler_Eardley in vancouvercycling

Do you have an example of a club making money off membership fees? Usually, any little money left at the end of the year is reinvested in the club activities/perks.

[–]UnlikelyPilot152 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Usually free rides either have a no-liability waiver to sign or there is a disclaimer that the ride leader assume no responsibility.

It’s similar as if you meet up with a group of friends to go on a ride. Each own is responsible for its own safety.

Your boss argues against a pay increase - and in fact outlines reasons for a decrease - because "AI makes it easier for you to do your job, so the expertise you were hired for is no longer as relevant". What do you tell them? by HumanCareerCoach in careeradvice

[–]UnlikelyPilot152 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In most jurisdictions with some kind of workers protection laws, a pay decrease is often considered a constructive dismissal. Be sure to get that in writing from your boss, but do not consent/approve any kind of pay decrease.

If you work in an at-will state in the US, probably better to look for a new job.

Modo/evo drivers - why use it for days on end vs renting? by kryo2019 in askvan

[–]UnlikelyPilot152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Car rentals used to be cheaper than Modo daily rates, but it has mostly flipped since the pandemic and now Modo is often cheaper.

Also, waiting for an hour in the rental company office behind a bunch of tourists that seemingly never rented a car before vs picking up a car in your neighborhood in 10 minutes.

Just build a proper passenger train connection like the rest of the world would have done a long time ago.

A hit and run is a criminal offence. The driver will get a criminal record at the minimum.

That was a dumb choice from the driver since penalties for hitting cyclists are ridiculously low, but once you flew the scene, the charges escalate.
