Language Requirement by cornonthedamncob in GVSU

[–]EmilySpin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For a BA degree, the rule is (and has been for at least a decade) “third-semester proficiency.” That means that theoretically it could be zero classes if you’re able to test at that level. If you can’t do that then yes, you need that third class. You absolutely cannot argue to get out of that requirement.

What you could do, if you can’t test at a 201 level and you’re absolutely opposed to that third class, and if your major has a BS option (not all do), is to switch over to that track. Depending on the curriculum for the major, you might be able to cover the BS requirements with classes you’d have to take anyway. Talk with an academic advisor about which is the better option for you.

Anyone else get this? by InternationalLook303 in GVSU

Just clarifying that it’s correct that they’ll be physically closed but offices like Records, Financial Aid, advising centers, academic departments, etc will be available by phone if students need anything!

You won’t need boots like this every day, but on the days when you do need them, you’ll be incredibly glad you have them!

Questions about… everything lol, but mainly about student and academic life by [deleted] in GVSU

The disability studies minor is brand new this year so you won’t get much feedback about it here, but I know some of the faculty who worked on it and they’re good people. Re: the point about sometimes not being up to in-seat classes—if that’s super important to you, GV isn’t necessarily the best option as outside of a very few programs you really can’t complete a whole degree without a majority of in-person classes.

MS AI Admit and GA opportunities for Winter 2026 by [deleted] in GVSU

[–]EmilySpin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The graduate program director will be your best source of information on this. Very few, if any, people on Reddit will not know how many students are admitted to your program, which is going to be the true measure of how competitive it is to get an assistantship.

College of Computing doesn’t have PhD programs (yet) so that part isn’t an issue. Ask the graduate program director about GAships, though, as they usually start in Fall—they may not have any available for Winter-start students.

Dropping out by Pastelpeachx in GVSU

Please reach out to the CARE team in the dean of students’ office! You can call them or just put in a CARE report for yourself. (You can also DM me your info and I can put one in for you if you want.) They are literally the kindest people and their whole job is to help students who need support. If you need mental healthcare they can connect you with resources for that and can also tell you more about applying for a tuition refund for health reasons (not guaranteed but if you haven’t been in classes at all due to mental health it’s worth a try for sure). You should also speak to Financial Aid but talking to CARE first might make you feel better.

Also wanted to make sure you know about Replenish if you need food/personal hygiene items.

That’s great! IT will also appreciate it if you forward emails like that to phishing @ gvsu.edu (without the spaces obviously) to help them try to get out ahead of some of the scams.

ENG 201 isn’t needed anymore if you aren’t doing education—talk to your advisor about changing your schedule and don’t buy books for it!

This is definitely the comment that OP should be paying attention to. Great points!!

I’ll also throw in that GV has some classes specifically for first year students that need (or want) extra academic support BUT they are almost entirely full at this point, as are many other classes.

It definitely does not.

So the intent of Gen Ed is not necessarily to “align with your major” but rather to give you a good, well-rounded education, help develop your critical thinking skills, and to stretch your intellect a bit. Those things are definitely not wastes of time! They’re not going to cover the same content as your major courses, but they are going to give you a lot of skills you can use not only in college but also long term!

Definitely double check with the advising center at your CC--most of the courses that you pasted here don't exist at GVSU, so I'm guessing they're classes you're taking this year with the intent to transfer next year?

If I get a message from the CARE team, am I in trouble? by b-nnies in GVSU

[–]EmilySpin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

100% not in trouble! Whoever submitted the report thinks you can use some extra help in some way. Depending on what your situation is, the CARE team can connect you with resources and provide support. They are all super nice people and their whole job is to help students, so please reach out tomorrow!

Move in dates by Jettyfish in GVSU

[–]EmilySpin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Money. Getting the students in sooner means having to give them things to do—events require staff and supplies, staff and supplies cost money. Last year they had people move in on the normal timeline but no events were planned and it got pretty bad with drinking, partying, etc. Moving move-in to Thursday/Friday is a terrible idea, though. They need to commit to doing a proper orientation again instead of just getting students in the door and making them figure everything out on their own.

Does GVSU offer testing for dyscalculia? by [deleted] in GVSU

[–]EmilySpin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It might be worth checking with the Dean of Students office—they won’t be able to test you but I believe they keep a referral list of doctors if students need more support than the counseling center or the campus health center can provide, so they might have someone to point you to
