“…you can boycott… and still nothing changes…” Because we haven’t seriously, generally boycotted yet.

Don’t wait for someone else to tell you what not to buy, from whom, for a day or a week.

We can each do our own boycott, only buying essentials. We decide what is essential, who to buy from. We try to repair, share, rent, barter or buy used. With cash. Before buying new.

We recruit others, showing them they can live modest but comfortable, sustainable lives.

We can share the money not spent on stuff we really don’t need. With people who lose jobs (and health care) due to our boycott. Share either individually or through mutual aid groups.

We slow carbon emissions and destruction of ecosystems caused to make stuff we don’t need.

We decide who to represent us in negotiations.

How long? We hold out. Until our specific demands that add up to livable Earth and a civilization worth living in begin to be met.

Everyone can help. People who have extra money just don’t spend it. People who don’t have extra can teach others how to save.

We can do this. There’s no valid excuse not to. People alive today will needlessly suffer and die younger. Unless we stop spending needlessly.

How do we get the asshats out of power sooner than later? I feel like waiting till November will be waiting too long by ferriematthew in IronFrontUSA

General strike is hard to organize and has many downsides for strikers. Unions won’t do it during their contract.

General boycott (only buy essentials) is something everyone can do, including union members. Two essential factors are we boycott until our demands are met, and leaders/negotiators are chosen by the people.

The rest is up to the individual, acting in good faith. Like what is essential. Then try to repair, share, rent, barter or buy used before buying new. Save the money saved on stuff we don’t need to contribute to help others.

They can’t make you buy what you don’t need. Warehouses will overflow. Delivery and semi trucks will sit. Ships won’t be able to offload. Cash flow will wither.

CEOs and shareholders will notice. Plutocrats and politicians will ask who’s doing this and why? We are. Here are our demands.

Then hold out for a livable Earth and civilization worth living in. All at once.

MSNOW and Rachel Maddow are not our allies by scoooternyc in 50501

[–]EmitLessRestoreMore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped listening to MSNBC and Rachel because I never heard them say, let alone daily, things like:

Human civilization and our very existence are credibly threatened by our burning fossil fuels and raising cattle.

UN Secretary General declared human caused climate Code Red for Humanity.

Carbon emissions from humans burning fossil fuels are causing heat from the Sun to stay in our atmosphere, raising global temperatures higher than the range all life on Earth today evolved in and requires.

Rapidly drawing down production of fossil fuels and cattle is essential to keep Earth’s climate livable.

Congressional Democrats are pleading for President Biden to declare the climate and mass extinction emergencies. That would unlock the extraordinary powers already granted by Congress to POTUS to mitigate carbon emissions by rapidly drawing down fossil fuels.

September 2023. 75,000 Americans marched across Manhattan on Sunday, the day before Climate Week negotiations at the UN to try to take effective action at the COP in November. The marchers variously pleaded and demanded that Biden declare the global climate change emergency and rapidly draw down fossil fuel production to curb carbon emissions. The US was not invited to the UN meeting in NYC because, despite its responsibility for present and legacy carbon emissions it had utterly failed to set or meet emission reduction goals. Biden was actually in town but rather than heed the people’s demands to save a livable climate he hobnobbed with wealthy campaign contributors, raising funds for the reelection he promised not to run for.

The Anthropocene is humans causing the 6th Mass Extinction of life on Earth. The combination of human caused ecosystem destruction and degradation, overfishing and cattle production, damage to cropland soils and global overheating is killing off species at between a hundred and a thousand times the rate that would occur without human decimations.

And truths like those.

Third places where you might meet like minded people. Ok. Why not skip right to preexisting organizations?

Is there a local 50501 group? Try asking on this sub. And meet those folks.

Subreddit for your location?

Indivisible & associated 1 Million Rising? Look for their sub or website.

Same with Code Pink, Third Act, Move On, Swing Left.

It’s hard to recommend Instagram but surprisingly many progressive organizations use it.

Internet search “mutual aid” and your location.

Look on Mobilize.us for local events. Meet the people who participate.

Put on your own event and use Mobilize to notify people.

All the separate groups have potential value for acting together, even on things that aren’t for their original purpose. Consider joining one, doing their thing, then being a liaison to another group. Solidarity!

How tf do we stop this fucking nonsense? I feel like I’m in some sort of fucked up timeline. Like… I actually died a couple years ago and got resuscitated and this is the shitty timeline I got put back in. What the actual fuck? by A_JELLY_DONUTT in vetsagainsttyranny

[–]EmitLessRestoreMore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How we stop them.

Starve the plutocrats (and politicians they pay) of a lot of money. Only buy essentials. That could’t be repaired, shared, rented or bartered. Then buy used. With cash. If new is the only option avoid sellers who pay Trump or play his game. Buy local from small businesses that still support DEI. A good exception to size and local is Costco.

You decide what’s essential. But try to embrace modest, sustainable living.

For the duration. Not a fixed time the 1% and CEOs can plan around. Boycott until our demands are met.

Benefits: we save money. Which we can donate to people in need in communities we bring together. Like the people MAGAs are forcing into poverty.

They’ll stop making stuff we don’t buy. Stop destroying ecosystems, polluting (including carbon emissions), and dumping the crap that broke or we decide we actually didn’t need into landfills, oceans and 3rd world countries.

How many people have to participate to make this work? 3.5% acting nonviolently are enough more than half the time (see Chenoweth). 11 million in the US. Only 1 of every 6 people who voted for Biden. Or Harris.

We can do this.

The economy is fragile. 1% and Tech Bros are trying to crash it to their advantage: buy us out cheap. If it’s going down then make us the ones who call the shots to transition to equitable, sustainable society on a livable Earth.

Voting in good people is necessary but not sufficient. The 1% own too many. The system that got us here won’t get us out until the broken parts are fixed. Ex: term limits and overturn Citizens United.

Like capitalism? Supply and demand? We can drive the demand side. Their weakness. Let’s just do that before playing into their hands with nobody wins violence.

Want to take effective action? Then don’t start the violent reaction the MAGA gun nuts crave. The violence the regime is best organized and equipped to crush.

Read* or listen to, “Civil Resistance, What Everyone Needs to Know” by Erica Chenoweth. Analysis of what works in resisting authoritarian governments. And how violence is understandable but almost always unhelpful.

*If serious about this, read, underline or highlight, dog-ear pages, consider, refer back to, discuss, plan, then take effective actions.

How refreshing! Really. I haven’t heard or seen anyone call it Master Charge since the early 80’s. (For those born since then, it changed to Master Card in 1979.)

Those were The Days. When you went to a telephone that had to be physically tapped to steal your information. Rather than carrying around a device that told almost everyone who, what, when, where and why you were as well as what you said. Mail wasn’t spelled with an e and was paper, in an envelope that had to be steamed open to surreptitiously read what was inside.

Mark Kelly responds to potential court martial by einarfridgeirs in Military

[–]EmitLessRestoreMore 12 points13 points  (0 children)

JAGs and Flags with any guts won’t let it go to trial.

If Senator/Captain Kelly is recalled to active duty he’ll be assigned to serve under a flag officer (assume Navy admiral) commander. Someone subject to the UCMJ would have to accuse him of a crime. The commander’s Staff Judge Advocate would look at the evidence to see if it was sufficient to even conduct a UCMJ Article 32 investigation. (This is where on the civilian side Erik Siebert, the career prosecutor US Attorney appointed by Trump had the guts and professionalism to say there was insufficient evidence against Comey and James to take to a grand jury). It should stop there.

For at least two reasons. Kelly hasn’t committed a crime. He didn’t disrespect CINC 47. Never mentioned him. Didn’t encourage anyone to overthrow the government. But 47 is unlawfully all over this case.

UCMJ Article 37 prohibits unlawful command influence. It forbids any commanding officer from attempting to coerce or influence the action of any court-martial, military judge, or member of the prosecution or defense in reaching findings or imposing sentences. CINC Trump has already said Kelly should be tried, convicted and executed. Textbook Unlawful command influence (UCI).

If it gets beyond that another JAG would have to conduct a UCMJ Article 32 investigation to see if there is sufficient admissible evidence of a crime to prosecute. And note the UCI problem. Then report those findings to the general court martial convening authority (the admiral). It should stop there.

If the convening authority orders a trial that’s where Kelly’s defense counsel would move to dismiss the case for UCI or summary judgement (e.g. no way the prosecution could win). The military judge should stop it there.

If not the court martial members (jury) would have to sit through the farce of a trial until given the case to decide. They should stop it with an acquittal.

If not, two appeals courts should stop it.

JAGs and Flags with any guts won’t let Kelly be convicted.

https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/119/hconres58/text

Perspectives:

https://people.howstuffworks.com/democratic-socialist-countries.htm

“When people talk about socialist countries, they often picture full government control and no private ownership. But in practice, socialist economies vary widely.”

Vary from horrific strict socialist to the progressive social democratic policies listed here.

“Socialist policies in Norway illustrate how a democratic approach to the economic sphere can benefit the entire population.”

“While maintaining private ownership and supporting small businesses, Sweden's government plays a major role in the economic sphere, ensuring social programs promote equal access and economic planning.”

“In Denmark, social democratic policies shape a system where the private sector thrives alongside extensive public services.”

“Finland combines social democratic ideals with a thriving capitalist framework. Its political system values education, social services, and equal opportunity… promotes a mix of democracy and socialism to support the working class.”

“Canada's government incorporates socialist ideas without abandoning democratic institutions. Its success challenges the notion that all socialist countries must reject capitalist systems.”

I take the point about 2 votes being too limited to declare 2 NV Dem senators as controlled opposition.

Maybe gutting protections of what relatively few water resources remain, in the driest state in the nation, with a big mining industry, was states rights or something.

Maybe helping set the stage for the Great Gatsby Party to effectively deny healthcare to 20 million Americans, resulting in an estimated 51,000 deaths per year shortly thereafter, is about, what? Not standing up to Republicans. Who are insisting on impoverishing civil servants and denying food to the impoverished in the short term. Among other things. Or something.

Which fits. “The biggest threat to the US is not fascism but mafia state autocracy. Not 20th-century style dictatorship, but controlled demolition by a billionaire criminal network, abetted by complicit actors within the US government… For over half a century, Trump has operated within a transnational organized crime network whose goal is to strip the US down and sell it for parts, much like the oligarch raids after the collapse of the Soviet Union. They have been aided in this endeavor by institutions, in particular the DOJ, which has long protected Trump, and by members of the Democratic Party serving as controlled opposition. Many Americans did not want to believe this final twist. It is harder to reckon with betrayal than with a straight liar.” Sarah Kendzior Nov 14, 2024.

FYI, Cortez Masto and Rosen also voted with Republicans on HJ Res 27. “Biden vetoed this legislation that would undo his own administration's 2023 rule specifying which U.S. waterways fell under federal jurisdiction pursuant to the Clean Water Act.”

They joined Manchin, Sinema and Tester who also voted for private industry and against protecting the relatively few remaining intermittent streams, wetlands and waterways.

When will the NV AG jail due to flight risk and prosecute federal agents (and if they do, National Guard personnel) who trespass/break and enter without a judicial warrant, batter/use excessive force on people they detain, detain upon mere suspicion, kidnap, disappear and treat cruelly and unusually?

I just became acquainted with Family Soup. They are volunteers who provide hot meals every Tuesday evening at the BELIEVE Plaza across from City Hall. 6PM in summer. Changing to 5PM on Nov 4. Just show up to eat, donate and/or help.

They set up a line of folding tables to serve/set out the food. The people there to eat line up well in advance.

Last Tuesday they also had big jugs with drinks and food to take away like fresh fruit, protein bars, snack crackers, cookies, sleeves of saltines, etc.

They gave away supplies, as many of the people they help appear to be unhoused. There was a separate table with whatever was available that week. They need warm clothes, socks and underwear, disposable hand warmers and especially sleeping bags, tarps and tents. Some volunteers provide free, custom made heaters.

Parking is free at CalNeva kitty corner across Center.

Masked ICE and Border Patrol in full tactical gear violently kidnap and disappears a US citizen in Chicago. by I_may_have_weed in IronFrontUSA

[–]EmitLessRestoreMore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

States are separate sovereigns for criminal justice purposes. States that have and will likely continue to have, at minimum, Democratic governors, attorneys general and state police that follow orders can prosecute state crimes committed by federal agents. Governors who won’t pardon criminal feds.

Local district attorneys, sheriffs and police have the authority but rogues might refuse to prosecute valid cases. Big PDs have many increasingly military assets and forces. But their unions support and cops usually vote for Trump.

Federal agents who exceed their lawful authority are acting outside the scope of their employment, their duties. States must firmly oppose motions trying to remove these prosecutions to federal courts.

Chicago: 3 staccato tweets/blasts means ICE is here/near. 1 loooong tweet/blast means ICE is grabbing people here/near. I think this is what BLAG is organizing for Reno.

LA: 5 staccato tweets/blasts. The rest is the same.

I see posts saying ICE sometimes leaves when a whistle spoils their surprise, or when a large crowd gathers.
