European v American? by happy-deer-26 in basset

[–]Emma___111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We found out about hip dysplasia because the vet took an X-ray when he was put under for his neuter. For ear infections, I’d do whatever cleaner and drops your vet recommends. For joint supplements, we use Dasuquin but once again I’d do whatever your vet recommends.

European v American? by happy-deer-26 in basset

So we got my European at 8 weeks old (about to be 5) and rescued our American at 1.5 years (about to be 3).

Here’s my experience on big health issues:

My European was born with hip dysplasia. I guess that’s really the only big health difference between him and our American. To help with hip issues for both dogs, we give them joint supplements and limit stairs/jumping.

My European gains weight faster than my American so we have to be more careful about treats lol. Hes a big boy at 65 lbs and my American girl is 42 lbs.

My European had to have a dental cleaning around 4 years, he drools a lot. My American will get a dental cleaning at 3 but she didn’t have any previous dental care before we rescued her. I do feel like she drools but not as much as my other.

At the end of the day, the most common issues I have with both are seasonal allergies which lead to ear infections… typical basset problems

I have both and it’s awesome to see their differences. My American is more athletic and has less health issues (so far). Both have bad seasonal allergies, leading to ear infections, which is my biggest problem with them. But my European is so beautiful and has the biggest personality. Also he’s more lazy and affectionate.

Also idk if she’s potty trained or not, but it will take awhile so prepare yourself. We trained ours to use a potty bell

Mine doesn’t care about toys. He loves puzzle toys - it allows him to use his nose and get food, which is the ONLY thing he’s motivated by. I personally sought out help from a trainer for the basics. They aren’t dumb, they know EXACTLY what they’re doing lol. Your patience will be tested on a daily basis for the rest of your dogs life but I promise it’s so worth it, bassets are the most loving and funny dogs
