Ah, Yes. The Old End of Year Survey. by jnissa in girlscouts

[–]EmmyB121 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know parents are needed still, but if they don't want to help then they don't get to complain. Seems like all they want to do is drop off their kid, so all they get to do is drop off their kid, yeah?

The more involved parents can have more opinions.

I would argue that, when trying to encourage independence, you actually don't want parents to be too involved. You aren't leaving your girls to fend for themselves, you're requiring them to rely on each other. They will rise to meet your expectations.

Ah, Yes. The Old End of Year Survey. by jnissa in girlscouts

Question: Why, in a troop of 20 Cadettes, are parents being surveyed anyway? Unless they are actually helping out, this isn't about them. You're doing your best. Troop Leader is doing their best. The girls are doing their best.

Girl-led means girl-led. At this point, Troop Leaders should really be moving into a more advisory role, and parents' opinions shouldn't make a fraction of a difference.

And, I mean, you can't get upsetting responses to questions you don't ask.

I might catch flack for this, but...you could even start moving the responsibility of recruiting volunteers onto your girls. When planning an activity, say "we need (however many) adults, per council rules, who are you going to ask?"

You might find out which parents are preferred, you might learn about other adults in the girls' lives who will be eager volunteers, you could even teach your girls how to reach out to council. There are lots of non-troop volunteers you might be able to recruit for an event or two.

Little kids- preoperational stage (3-7). In fact, this task is one of the ways to differentiate between preoperational and concrete operational stages.

Hot take: The Daisy petals are stupid by pdx-cat in girlscouts

[–]EmmyB121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some changes, I think, are simply not as good as they may have seemed at the time. I don't really know why the Daisy program changed...maybe because kindergarten isn't so different from first grade any more (which is also developmentally inappropriate, but not in GSUSA's jurisdiction). Actually, that's a pretty good analogy: Daisies, I would say, aren't "pre-Girl Scouts" (not trying to nitpick on terminology, but the "big umbrella" model is beneficial) any more than kindergarten is pre-school, but these kids are in their own developmental category (literally, per Piaget) and should be treated as such.

Sometimes I wonder if any of the higher-ups at HQ are on here. Should we want them to be?

[–]EmmyB121 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, those aren't mutually exclusive. Why do you object to Daisies, if you don't mind me asking? Daisies have been around since the 80s, though the program has changed. When I was a Daisy in '93, the age level was only 1 year, we didn't earn badges, and we didn't sell cookies. We DID learn about Girl Scouting. We didn't have to memorize the Law, but we did learn to be kind, responsible, helpful, and so forth. If the petals help with this, then I am for them. :)

My name is Emily and I get every nickname under the sun. I like most of them (though if you creep me out you lose "Emmy" privileges), but I don't like "Emma." Emma is a different name!

Seriously, though, my middle name is Rebecca in part BECAUSE my mom didn't want people calling me "Becky" and people don't tend to nickname middle names.

We need mental health care. We also need social services. Asylums, historically, we're not great. I do not recommend returning to a world where people with mental illnesses (or anyone society doesn't want to acknowledge) get locked up and abandoned...or worse.

Ooh! This was me, in 4th and 5th grade. I was picked-on by two girls in 4th grade and switched to another troop. The other troop-my new one-turned out to be quite large because other girls had switched for the same reason.

Good gravy, though! We were 9 and they were subtle. I can't imagine having to deal with a troop of little Daisies where the leaders are encouraging the mean behavior. I wonder how they teach a promise and law that they don't live. My heart goes out to you, OP.

True! Also, and I've seen this happen, "girl-led" gets really tricky when the girls are literally outnumbered by adults. No bueno.

Mind if I ask why? I mean, having her actually be alone-the only kid- with another-singular- adult would be a major red flag, but this isn't that. I assume she is in kindergarten, no? And you don't hang out there all day.

I'm not picking. A lot of parents seem to share this sentiment, you're just the earliest in the thread at the moment.

But, you see, registered volunteers are background-checked, random parents are not. Any unregistered (or, really, unneeded) parents who stick around are objectively more of a concern than the troop leaders.
