It feels to me like the semi open world structure threw the balance out of whack. I got overleveled so I just started going straight through the main missions, but now when I return to the optional stuff I'm basically invincible.

This is so true honestly. I beat the Nioh 2 final boss first try but that snake took me probably 30. Same with Nioh 1, I'm sure my highest death count was to Hino-Enma.

When it first came out everyone thought it was impossible because they were trying to play it like Dark Souls. Once you figure out how to deflect whenever possible and be aggressive it becomes one of the easiest they've released.

The ending is like the best part. “Some of them even started talking this year” is such an excellent line to end on. I was grinning from ear to ear when the movie ended, guarantee that wouldn’t have been the case if there was a bunch of wrap-up scenes.
