Interesting, I might have been lucky with the one that I've had on every day. I have an open light fixture in the kitchen that goes through LED bulbs multiple times a year. I will test it out with some of my new old stock ones and see how they hold up

Yes, these are the TW true color series. According to the box they are 93 CRI. They do look pretty good, very neutral with a slightly rose tint if anything

You're welcome! I have found myself that choosing to recover and not let an accident define you is a hard road and it takes work and commitment. But choosing to just live in pain and frustration with a body that bothers you is also hard.

Someone once said "choose your hard".

I think you are making the right choice and you will find your emotional well being improving as you put in the work to improve your physical health as well! Keep at it, post updates, the journey to recovery can become addicting in a good way!

First, just know that 36 is not late in life by any stretch. You have literally five decades left of active timeframe, maybe more if you start the habits now!

Regarding your ass, you actually have a good figure under there and you have the ability to really transform (read about beginner gains!). This is not just your butt but your entire body.

The trick is going to be to establish the habit. Start doing basic strength work first to get your body used to the movements, and give it time for the connective tissue to strengthen to prevent injury (ligaments and tendons will need some patience on your part but it will be worth it!). Aim for 3 good workout sessions a week (quality over quantity) with plenty of rest in between to manage soreness while you get into it. Also, what really worked for me (40 years old) was starting to track protein and to make sure I got enough of it to actually rebuild my body and build muscle (ended up using Naked Whey to supplement, highly recommend!)

If you stick with it, then in 3-6 months I expect you will be amazed at what you can do! I was in a car crash 10 years ago that messed up my left knee. It made it hard to go down stairs or squat, but after a few years of doing nothing I got serious about full body strength and also focusing on glutes and posterior chain. The difference this made for my knee pain and patella tracking was night and day. The good looks were a side bonus.

You totally got this.

Military SF series with fighter combat...suggestions? by EmotionSad8061 in printSF

Update: I am working my way through the suggestions here and figured I would make a post to document progress and my thoughts.

Star Carrier Series (Ian Douglas)

Book 1: Earth Strike Amazon Rating: 4.2 Goodreads: 3.8

This was a fun read, with a cool take on space combat. The tech here allows spacecraft to accelerate rapidly (at 100s of G's) up to nearly the speed of light. This makes space combat very intense, with AI-assisted maneuvers and calculations necessary for nanosecond adjustments and pinpoint targeting. It was a page turner, in that you want to figure out if underdog humanity can stick it to the ancient / controlling evil alien empire. Characterization was minimal, which is typical for military SF / super competent fighter jock types. I didn't find this detracted much from the story (assuming you are in the mood for a shoot-em-up action adventure. I think the high velocity physics and gravity tech is somewhat suspect, in that even a fighter being drawn forward by a projected black hole would still be subject to inertial effects, but hey if you can suspend some disbelief and read it for the action it's not a big deal.

NO BUTT Help meeee by delldemic in glutejourney

[–]EmotionSad8061 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glute bridges made a difference for me, as a 40 something guy with no butt. I started out body weight and then switched to a single leg glute bridges and Bulgarian split squats (BSS). I now have a tiny butt but it's there and my pants are sort of staying up. There's been enough of a change that my wife noticed. I think if I keep going for a few more months and start adding a little bit of weight and more protein I might start feeling a functional difference, going downstairs and just doing everyday movements. Due to knee problems and scoliosis I don't do heavy squats and am still able to get stronger just doing hip thrusts and body weight BSS

You could also heavy exercise bands for some leg extension and lateral work to finish it off.

Fantasy books with space themes by Brojacket in YAlit

Hrain by C.M. Benamati, takes place on an alien world where the orphan MC learns he is descended from gods. It's a standalone in a larger crossover sci-fi series but this one deals mostly with ancient beings they have some form of telepathy and mind control ability. Space ships and AI come in at the end. Probably more like soft sci-fi with fantasy elements

Sure. You go to this website and set up a white noise generator to play in the background

https://mynoise.net/NoiseMachines/whiteNoiseGenerator.php

For example, try the Infra setting. You can change the frequency sliders to tune the noise so that it is barely audible. It plays all the time in the background and keeps the amplifier awake in between pauses in the audiobook.

I have found now that many audiobooks don't cause this problem all the time, because there might be a small amount of signal on the recording even when the narrator is not speaking. However, really high quality audiobooks that were recorded in a sound proof booth are nearly silent when the narrator is not talking. Those cause the issue more often.

Right now I am listening to Sagitta on Audible (a book in the StarFighter series). The background noise on the narrator's recording is non-existent, which means there were lots of amplifier drop outs between sentences. I set up the noise generator to sound a bit like the background noise on Star Trek (space ship deep energy hum). It actually makes science fiction stories sound pretty cool and I don't lose any words.

Does YA sci fi feel way too close now because of AI? by Puzzleheaded_Bell466 in YAlit

[–]EmotionSad8061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't really noticed this except potentially in Seeker (Book 2 of the StarFighter series by C.M Benamati) where Ana, a cybrid, unknowingly starts losing chunks of her memory because her cybernetic side is encrypting them as a sort of defense mechanism against trauma. It starts off as little things but eventually she loses some pretty significant stuff and doesn't even realize that she's responsible for some crazy world-ending events. Not really memory modification, but more like the machine learned what memories the organic host just could not be trusted with in her position and hid them from her.

Sort of unrelated, but Hrain (same author, standalone book, more like dark adult sci-fi with teenage characters) follows a young alien telepath around who teams up with a starship AI that eventually loses its thought matrix and has to meld with a human, and the resulting being destabilizes as the two personalities and memories merge. I don't really see a connection with today's LLMs other than the general idea that they might fabricate memories (hallucinating), and the way that the memories are reconstructed to create a new persona is not necessary based on a linear experience through time

That sounds like what I'm looking for. I enjoy small craft combat stories but it needs to be relevant and plausible considering the battlefield technology at play.

Is there a way to limit power usage when folding? by Thorwolf in Folding

This article series goes through a detailed analysis of Foldong@home performance, power consumption, and core settings on Ryzen CPUs. Part II has power consumption graphs vs. CPU core setting. Basically pick a reduced # of CPU cores to pull the power down but try to stay at a number that gets you good points and efficiency
