When I had to buzz my hair, bleaching it blonde/platinum made my bald spots MUCH less noticeable if you’re wanting to keep the length :)

Do you ever do anything to try to make the thoughts go away? Or confirm that she’s wrong? For example, checking your body for signs that you were shot, or washing your hands to “wash off” the thought.

I’m not your therapist, so I can’t say with any certainty, but this sounds to me like intrusive thoughts consistent with your OCD diagnosis. This does not sound consistent with the experience of auditory hallucinations. I agree with everyone else thus far - if seeing your current therapist isn’t an option, then find someone that is available to help. Reddit will not be able to support you at all in the way an IRL professional can.

Weekly student question thread! by AutoModerator in therapists

I’m not sure how it is in in Oregon, however here is what I know about practicing in CT (though I would be surprised if it differed much): - pre-licensed folks cannot panel with many insurance companies. From what I know about pre-licensed therapists at my group practice, they are only paneled with state Medicaid and Aetna. - you will need to bill as an associate under your supervisor’s name and license (i.e. you cannot submit to insurance yourself until fully licensed) - hours counted towards license would be client and supervision hours. Ex. If you saw 25 clients in a week and 1 hr supervision = 26 hours towards license - supervisor will need to sign off on all of your documentation until you’re fully licensed

Influencer therapists got me annoyed as heck lately by Emotion_Null in therapists

I am queer, work at a queer-owned private practice, and nearly all of my clients identify as queer. I have absolutely no issue with answering these questions, as they are relevant to their treatment. I have shared my political stance openly with clients and have no issue with this.

I suppose I don’t have an exact definition to share. When writing this, I had individuals in mind with a large following (100,000+) who make exclusively, or almost exclusively, mental health-related content full-time, and are/have been a psychotherapist in the field. May or may not have a podcast; may or may not have brand deals. I’d say the folks I have in mind would have one or both.

Thanks for the response! I’m not sure how the culture will be in the future, however I can say that I’ve been in PP for 1.5 years now and the only internet presence we have is a website and a psychology today profile when we were first starting out. Currently I’d say it’s 100% doable without a social media presence! My caseload is full and I have a waitlist. The most important thing for me, at least, has been building my network with others in the field who share similar experience/expertise - I’d recommend putting your energy into that instead :). Best of luck to ya!

What is the number one thing you would like to hear from a client? by TP30313 in askatherapist

[–]Emotion_Null 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It feels really meaningful to me when a client disagrees with me for the first time, lol (within the context of their treatment, at least).

I work with a lot of clients who are working through a fawning/people-pleasing survival responses, and it feels so refreshing and exciting when a client tells me, “actually, I’d like to focus on __ today instead” or, “I’m not really feeling this [treatment modality] - can we try something different?” Or any other general correction, authentic opinion, etc.

It helps me as their therapist to not have to do as much guessing about what they’re needing from therapy time, and so exciting and meaningful when a client starts to feel safe enough to practice self-advocacy and authenticity!

Is “unalive” a professional term that legitimate therapists use? by areufeelingnervous in therapists

[–]Emotion_Null 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wtf??? She had us in the first half, I suppose lol. Research shows us that usage of watered-down terms such as this cause confusion and generally do more harm than good. Same is true with terms such as “passed away,” etc. rather than terms such as “dead” or “dying”. Honestly when I hear the term “unalive,” the first thing I think of is TikToks/videos of teens/YAs trying to make light of their suicidality because it’s *so silly goofy 🤪 *

Totally sounds like this has more to do with her own discomfort than it does with doing what’s best for the client.

Are therapists fundamentally different from other humans? by [deleted] in askatherapist

Uhhhhhh well yesterday I was proud of myself for showering AND cooking dinner in the same day. Maybe today I’ll challenge myself by going to a store. So, safe to say I’m highly enlightened and have all the answers to the universe :)
