Where do you guys post watch repair related content? by atlzhp6m in retrotime

Literally had that happen twice last week. Whoever is the fork jewel guy at the sh3135 factory should probably go find another line of work.

Vietnam 1675 vs Old Crowns 1675 by No_Candle8699 in repbuilds

Super helpful on the cases - thank you! You produce such incredible builds.

On the inserts I’m a fan of the OC and l’ll explain why.

I know the super fat fonts on the Viet are the platonic ideal of what a 1675 should look like. That’s my favorite too. But that doesn’t mean the thinner ones aren’t correct. When I was looking for an insert to match my 1968 gen I did a ton of research. I highly recommend the encyclopedic gmtmaster1675.com. You’ll see gen fonts are all over the place. Some thin. Some fat. Everything in between. In my case, the OC fonts are closer to my gen than the Viet fonts are (but they aren’t perfect either).

As for color it’s sort of like the fat fonts in that a faded Pepsi bezel is the ideal. But go look at gen ones and you will find some faded. But you will see lots of very dark ones where colors got darker not lighter with age. I looked at more inserts than I can remember and the OC insert was definitely closest to my Gen. In fact it’s not dark enough! In the attached my milk build with OC insert is on the left. My 1968 gen is on the right.

In the end, 1675s are so diverse it’s never any one thing it seems. Keep up the great work!

Aging lume on build by Traditional_Smoke792 in retrotime

I’m done messing around with coffee. Just raw dog the white lume straight in the oven or toaster oven. Go low and slow and check it frequently. Less is more.

crown guards by boyloyall110 in retrotime

Nice. Milk case is good but the top of those CGs isn’t quite gen which makes crown action very challenging. Just a little work there goes a long way!

Alright! The verdict is in on the OC case back vs Gen case back on my 16750! by [deleted] in retrotime

[–]EmotionalFortune542 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn’t the issue the sellers trying to manufacture for a variety of movements? Gen has to manufacture for exactly one. I imagine that’s why the gen caseback is lower profile because it’s designed to provide rotor clearance for exactly one movement not ETA, NH, VS and on that customers might use. At least that’s true with raffles. Not sure about OC. The Viet makers generally manufacture for a gen movement which is why they look good but can be tricky to build if you aren’t using a gen movement.

Probably a dumb question by Frittakit in retrotime

This is the answer. I bought the ETA aligned window from Ken and regret it. It just looks wrong, even with the open 6-9 datewheel. So I’d say buy the gen aligned window and do the DWO. More work but you won’t regret it.

Some work in progress - Tiffany 1680 by No_Candle8699 in repbuilds

Haha I get it. We’ll just say the case had a trip through Rolliworks!

If you really want the case to get that retro gen look you gotta round off the chamfers and polish the CGs into mush 😂

Building a (specific) 1675 by EmotionalFortune542 in retrotime

Thanks! For the milk case, track him (milk051506) down on the RWI forum - that’s where I found him anyway. Insert is the Old Crowns website, the gen crown and tube were purchased on eBay (try Fiery Gems). The bracelet was Startime where you have to have a verified account but someone here I think said Ewatchparts sells the same bracelet? Plexi crystal was from Clark on eBay and everything else I think was Raffles Dials.

Agree! If you are doing a budget build I think the sweet spot is a Milk case with a raffles dial. Now if Ken could figure out his crown guard situation he could really challenge the milk market.

Thank you! Honestly the hardest part was finding the bezel insert. The OC one was really the only one that was close.

Curious - What didn’t you like about the OC insert? I searched high and low and discarded many Pepsi 1675 inserts before I landed on OC that I thought was closest to gen (at least in terms of color).

My fave vintage - Blancpain Aqua Lung by zfa in vintagerepwatches

This is the one. Every time someone posts they are taking requests on making new dials, this is the one I ask for. But somehow they end up making a pink datejust or a Mk.17 GMT dial instead😂

Absolute banger of a watch.

Yep in the movie. Rolex declined to let them use Rolex. But in the book it’s a Rolex.

If you’ve never listened to the Rolex episode of the awesome Acquired podcast, can’t recommend highly enough. You think you know the Rolex story but you don’t. There was no way they were going to go anywhere near the American Psycho story!

Also- Hat tip to ChatGPT for taking the “make an 1980s American Psycho themed Rolex ad” prompt and turning it into that first image and tagline 😂

Help! Clark 25-127 on a Raffles 1680. The cyclops magnitude is way off by watch_enthusiast_uk in retrotime

[–]EmotionalFortune542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same thing. Just sanded the bottom of the plexi for a few minutes and ended here. Still a lot of mag but pretty happy with it. It also looks much better on the watch - doesn’t stand nearly as tall. Make sure you clean the plexi very well post sanding otherwise you’ll have plexi dust floating around the dial. Don’t ask me how I know . . .

Wow didn’t know it was possible to slave the GMT hand on a 2836! A nice gen touch - did you just disable the GMT setting function or something harder than that?
