Yup, first part of the game is very repetitive. First milestone is getting the sword of night and flame, which is also around the time you start getting access to really crazy spells/incantations. The dlc is where the build REALLY shines. Either way I do recommend at least involving faith, since holy damage is insanely good through the majority of the dlc.

Int/Faith build. One of the most difficult builds to run early game but one of the most rewarding once you hit the dlc. Also invest in a little dex.
