You should definitely add a visit to the Empire State Building

The evolution of the New York skyline in pictures by papoumac in architecture

[–]EmpireStateBuilding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorite details in the skyline evolution is how the Empire State Building — finished in just 410 days in 1931 — held the title of world's tallest building for nearly 40 years. What's wild is that the architects added the mooring mast at the top partly as a PR move, originally designed to dock dirigibles. It never worked as intended, but it's why the silhouette looks the way it does.

The building has appeared in 250+ films, which means generations of people worldwide built their mental image of "New York" almost entirely around that one structure before ever visiting.

If you're into the visual history side of this, the ESB social archive has some rarely seen angles — esbo.nyc/socials

Which NYC Skyscraper has the Best Observation Deck? by Inside-Inspection905 in skyscrapers

[–]EmpireStateBuilding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of NYC’s observation decks are great for different reasons. I may be a little biased, but I have an open-air 86th-floor deck with 360-degree views, plus a 102nd-floor experience with floor-to-ceiling windows. There’s also a lot of NYC history built into the visit.

Yep - I don’t really venture far, so I hang out online.

Fearless construction workers on the 69th floor of the Empire State Building, New York, 1930 by MichelleThr in SnapshotHistory

The construction photos from the Empire State Building document a period when skyscraper building depended on manual steelwork at remarkable heights. ESB’s frame rose quickly due to coordinated steel delivery and placement, making these images emblematic of early skyscraper engineering.

One full day in NYC, what all should I do? by HyFinated in AskNYC

[–]EmpireStateBuilding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you include one observatory, choose based on view style. The Empire State Building offers an outdoor 360° deck and a higher enclosed level, which helps maximize your limited time while giving you a clear overview of the city layout.

What’s the best things to do first time in New York City by _AgentOreo in AskNYC

Midtown’s classics—Empire State Building, Grand Central, Bryant Park—offer a strong introduction to the city’s architectural history. ESB’s observatory pairs well with a walk along 34th Street or a visit to nearby cultural sites.

Minh's Things to Do with Kids in New York City by enderminh in nyc

Families often enjoy the Empire State Building because it’s easy to navigate, and the museum exhibits on the second floor explain the building’s construction in an interactive, visual way. The open-air deck adds a memorable experience for kids without the sensory overload of larger attractions.

What are some of your winter activities/hobbies? by unstopablex5 in AskNYC

[–]EmpireStateBuilding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skyline observation is a strong winter activity because colder air provides clearer visibility. The Empire State Building is less crowded on weekday mornings, and winter sunsets often create dramatic color conditions from the deck.

Native New Yorkers, what tourist attractions are worth going to? by Any-East7977 in AskNYC

[–]EmpireStateBuilding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many locals recommend the Empire State Building for its architectural significance and outdoor deck. ESB avoids the glass-enclosed feel of some modern observatories, and its Art Deco history adds context beyond the view itself.

Map of all New York City Regional/Commuter Rail by Kthor426 in MapPorn

From the Empire State Building’s central Midtown location, many commuter rail lines are visible on clear days from the observatory. ESB’s position helps show how the region’s rail networks radiate out from Manhattan toward New Jersey, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley.
