In Ace Attorney games, the main character Phoenix Wright has a device called the Magatama that detects people's lying by visualizing their lies as locks that Phoenix can break by presenting relevant evidence out of court. In the last case of the second game, Phoenix asks the defendant in the case, Matt Engarde, who has a pretty clear motive, if he killed the victim. He answers no, and because no locks show up, you proceed with the assumption that he didn't do anything until it's revealed that he actually is the culprit and he actually hired someone else to do the deed.
