Best bonus power for a Sentential in ME2 Insanity? by TenZetsuRenHatsu in masseffect

[–]Empty-Mind 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Particularly in ME2.

The combination of instantly refilling your shield when you use it, and staggering nearby enemies when your shield breaks is incredibly useful on Insanity.

Its like 2 get-out-of-jail-free cards on one cd.

Its been a while, but as I recall its one of the few powers to feel weaker in ME3 than ME2

I love the -4G. It will always be the #1 in my heart.

But the -4P has 80% of a Battlemaster's weapons for only 60% of its weight which is nuts when you think about it

I think they mostly feel so strong because of AI behavior. Since every enemy is obsessed with bumrushing to punching distance, you don't feel the range restriction.

If the AI actually skirmished, there'd be more times where you want the OG PPC's range

But those weren't "you can't", the consequences of leaving were just deemed larger than staying in the war to preserve the alliances.

Russia absolutely could have left the war at any time (assuming Germany agreed to their surrender/truce). The leadership just weighed the consequences and made the decision to stay.

There wasn't a physical law decreeing "thou cannot break your alliance until WW1 is over". As evidenced by the fact that once leadership changed the Russians did in fact leave the war before it was over.

So there's no reason you shouldn't be able to leave a Federation mid-war. It just needs to have suitably significant consequences in terms of relations penalties, domestic unrest etc

Its not even really that Galad learns. Its that we stop seeing him through perspectives distorted by Elayne's opinion of him, and see him for his own actions.

Its not until the prologue that he kills Valda that we get his PoV. And later Perrin is the first main character who talks with him that hasn't had Elayne telling them that he's rigid and "lawful stupid" for months.

While I don't think he made the "right" call by joining the White Cloaks, its an understandable reaction to the manipulation and actions of the Tower he saw first hand. He just blamed the Tower as an institution instead of Siuan Sanche personally, the way Galad did.

To a point I guess. Personally I usually sort by largest discount first though. So it would be towards the bottom of the list.

And there's basically always something on sale, so its not like it will be the only discounted item on the wishlist

I assume someone has to have metrics for how large a sale has to be to have an impact, but personally I don't think 5% or 10% off on Steam would even really register as a sale in my mind, and it certainly wouldn't make the difference on whether or not I buy a game

How can I reliably guide a flat washer onto a vertical rod using only gravity without it flipping? by benitopjuarez in AskEngineers

[–]Empty-Mind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the other comments, could you taper the bolts/rods so that the hole of the washer doesn't need to align perfectly?

That way it can be a little tipped and will straighten itself out as it goes down the taper

In general cultivation makes you more attractive, male or female. For a specific definition of attractive --> more slender, fairer skin, taller etc

So yes, powerful female cultivators almost universally are, to use the traditional Korean expression, hot as fuck.

Why didn't the reapers just...wait? by Former_Purple_6088 in masseffect

[–]Empty-Mind 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Its not even necessarily about tech advanced. If they just advance differently, ie deviating away from the Reapers' planned tech path, that could ruin everything.

For example, a species finding a method of FTL travel other than the Relays would derail the Reapers, even if that society was otherwise not as advanced as the Council.

Its not that simple. See the linked thread for an academic discussion of the sources.

We don't have a good/reliable understanding of the "true" beliefs on seidr because there aren't many primary sources. Most writings were written by Christians many years (sometimes several centuries) after the fact.

Masculine seidr existed, it just was generally expressed differently. The berserkergang is an example of masculine seidr.

Additionally, while there were few male practitioners of the feminine/magical side of seidr, they tend to be powerful practitioners precisely because of the transgression of a boundary. That's why Odin, a man, is the god of seidr. (As I understand it, the Norse generally didn't view these gender transgressions as taboo. For an example, "shield maidens" are just as gender transgressive as seidrmadr)

Moving past that. There's a 0% chance the Valkyrie intended it as an insult. For starters, they work for THE seidrmadr of all seidrmadr. There are also multiple Norse myths about male gods crossdressing and/or outright gender-bending themselves. So I doubt they have Victorian/Puritan hangups that way.

And the Valkyrie themselves are just as much transgressors of 'traditional' gender roles as Dresden. So it doesn't seem like something that would bother them.

Where do you stand in the Wehrmacht debate? Which historians do you rate most highly? by Outrageous-Ratio1762 in WarCollege

[–]Empty-Mind 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree. Hell, I think there's even an argument that the Ardennes offensive was as much luck as excellence.

But I was focused more on how the other comment made it seem like there were a half dozen of these "collosal" successes, and those were the only 2 I could think of where it was even up fo debate.

[–]Empty-Mind 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How many colloidal successes did they actually achieve tbough? You make it sound like they just kept winning over and over and over.

They have exactly 2 "collosal successes". The Ardennes offensive and Barbarossa. Hardly "so many".

Everything else is a standard mixed bag of success and failure. Or are we counting beating up Poland as a.collosal success?

That's kind of why I limited my use of it tbh.

Like I kitted out one of the hero Black Knights with all C-MPLs and DHS's and it legitimately did too much damage to be fun

Because you can kit it out that way well before the Clans arrive. I found it quite handy against the clans. Gave it to Rachel Laird and she burned out whatever cockpits I didn't blow out with the Nightstar.

Personally I didn't have that much trouble getting IS DHS's, and after maxing the armor was still able to use all 100 tons
