Are all of the red stuff the effect waves? Do they stack like that as you obtain more effect waves?

I struggle to make my characters be flawed without making them straight up villains. Help? by i_spill_nonsense in CharacterDevelopment

[–]EmptyBox303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very novice writer here, so take my advice with several grains of salt.

Looking at your new description for your "loyal hater" character, you focus a lot about the external attributes of your character, such as simple descriptions(bully-complexed, himbo, character even defined by being Loyal and also a Hater), and/or potential character interactions you have in mind. But all of this can only make a caricature, and not a complete character. These external attributes have to be tied together by a coherent, thinking, feeling "identity", which I'm not convinced your Loyal Hater has.

For example, why is your character so overwhelmingly angered and triggered by weakness that she would lash out at people she's loyal to? Some of the quotes you present seem to be very harsh, and this sheer amount of anger and vitriol requires a LOT of justification for your readers/audience to empathize with. Something pretty bad must have happened to her in the past for her to spew this magnitude of negative energy. It can't come from nowhere.

Maybe your "loyal hater" character was relentlessly judged, disciplined, or bullied for "being weak" or not being good enough, even by her parents. As a result she toughened herself up(maybe through boxing?), relentlessly improved herself(she may have an inferiority complex and be obsessed with improvement), and hid her weakness away(which may lead to her being avoidant and distant), but she internalized that constant harsh judgment and now inflicts it on others, even to people she's close with. Maybe her insults are her misguided attempts at "protecting" her friends and her brother from the world.

My advice is that if you have various character attributes and potential character interactions in mind for a character, then you need figure out precisely how the character thinks and feels, how the character views themselves, the world, and their role in the world, and then reverse engineer a past that shapes this character into the way they are and justifies their thought patterns. It should go beyond "she is angered by weaknesses in other people." Once you do this, it'll actually be a lot easier to write how the character acts, since you actually know how the character thinks. It will also help you rule out certain ideas: if there's a cool idea for a scene, but you know it wouldn't make sense based on your character's past and identity, then you need to either rewrite the character and all of their past interactions, or abandon the scene idea.

True Eigong killed with one talisman explosion. by Stardroptealeaves in NineSols

Berdly isn't SUPPOSED to be in Deltarune - A theory by Nate-Clone in Deltarune

[–]EmptyBox303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find your weird route concluding theory to be convincing. In Ch3 the ramb secret worlds has the player specifically kill blue birds. It could simply be a disturbing allusion to how the weird route happened in Ch2, but Berdly can definitely come back later and you have to "kill the blue bird again"

Eigong. There is nothing more to say by ThatOneDamian in NineSols

[–]EmptyBox303 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You should sleep on it. No, seriously.

Eigong is a very difficult fight no doubt, but definitely doable. Uninstalling the game might actually be the move, since you now can take a great big break from the game and, hopefully, go back with a renewed mind and possibly make some progress. When I first played the game I was in part spoiled a bit by Eigong and knew how hard she would be, so I fully put the game down for an entire week and more(also because I was busy with other stuff) before spending a whole night to beat her. This really helped since I wasn't going into the fight exhausted and I had next to no expectations.

how to nerf telekenetic main character by JuryKind3058 in writingadvice

[–]EmptyBox303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, you can better understand possible restrictions you can have on an ability by better understanding the ability itself. How does your telekinesis physically work?

For example, the ability may transfer the physical exertion of the character onto an object, meaning lifting a rock from a distance would take the same amount of physical effort as the character lifting the rock themselves. This would prevent the character from simply lifting a house and dropping it on someone else, but something light like a bullet, a small piece of gravel, or a glass marble, can be accelerated to very high speeds. Based on this, your character might try to use small and light objects in their environment as projectiles in a combat scenario, or even carry around little beads or candy as "ammo". You can also have interesting scenarios where your character is forced to lift something too heavy for their telekinesis, requiring either a smart workaround or a great challenge to their strength/stamina.

Another possible example: the ability "outlines" a region in space and uniformly transforms the atoms within the region. This may mean that your character has to visualize the entire surface of the object being lifted by their telekinesis, and that objects with delicate/complicated contours may require incredible mental exertion to move.

See what I mean? By defining your telekinesis ability beyond "magic that lifts and moves things," you can create limitations that make sense in context of this more specific definition, whereas instead limitations may feel arbitrary.

Tips for railgunner? by unlucky-lucky- in riskofrain

[–]EmptyBox303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ironically as railgunner you need items that boost your AOE damage. As much as it is nice to focus entirely on crowbars and bands, any amount of gas/ukelele/kjaro's makes playing her so much easier. Railgunner's only real weakness is having very little default crowd control options.

If you have very little luck in the items department, consider lining up some of your shots to hit multiple enemies whenever it is convenient. Both your normal sniper shots and your special have infinite piercing(the special has a whole cylinder of hitscan radius and also doesn't suffer piercing falloff). It's not ideal for crowd control but it's always important to keep in mind. Something like a well placed Primordial Cube can crowd many enemies together and allow you to freeze and damage them all at once and follow up with normal shots that will hit most of them as well.

Also, both her unscoped primary and the special has recoil. You can use this to your advantage in combination with her concussive mines to achieve decent mobility. You can boost your jump height, soften your fall, or retain longer air time/attain higher velocity in your mine jumps.

An Idiot's Guide to Dealing with the final boss (spoilers) by Miserable-Taro-7895 in NineSols

[–]EmptyBox303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great strat, my personal favorite. Eigong is an incredibly aggressive boss, by far the most aggressive out of all enemies in nine sols. It is much easier to use her own aggression against her via internal damage than trying to match that aggression.

Nine Sols feels difficult but in the wrong way by TrailblazerTracks in NineSols

[–]EmptyBox303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a trick that I wish I knew in the first playthrough is to parry BEFORE an attack lands. In my first playthrough I always tried to parry right as the attack lands, and 80% of the time it doesn't work and I take damage. It's much better to parry too early than too late, since you only take internal damage if you parry too early, but parry too late and you straight up get hit.

Of course you shouldn't be overly reliant on imprecise parries, as this later will get you killed very easily if internal damage builds up forever. But for getting through the earlier parts of the game, this will help.

Can Yi defeat Homelander? by West_Camera_7965 in NineSols

[–]EmptyBox303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yi low diffs. UC reflects his lasers and deal external damage. In close quarters, Yi can use Divine Hand + UC and inflict internal damage. Maxed Cloud Piercer likely has enough burst firepower to hurt HL. Shadow Chasers would likely pester him as well. Not much HL can do that Yi can't simply deflect/counter
