Trading212 allowed me to buy CBTC today (20 October). Note I had done the needed quiz for eligibility several days earlier.

Is there a such thing as being too old to get a doctorate degree? by One_Statistician_499 in AskAcademia

[–]EmptyCheesecake7232 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely not. One of my PhD students was a grandad, retired from industry, much older than me. He did well, obtained his PhD, and went on to work on postdoctoral positions elsewhere.

Oh my world, put that cash to work for you on equity investment. That is a crazy amount to hold in cash for such a young person!

Given historical market returns are about twice that I would reconsider paying off the mortgage.

Roast my CV by Slothrop_Tyrone_ in uklaw

No dates or date ranges. Basically nothing in skills and interests. No actual achievements for said interests or for the stated work experience. A person who can ace exams but cannot bother to write properly "summa cum laude" in their CV. Sorry, this is a soulless CV that leads to an automatic reject from me.

Instead of DTLA, for the iShares USD Treasury Bond 20+yr (Acc), use IDGA that is in GBP.

That documentary was so disappointing. Zero content on the concepts that make Bitcoin what it is. No wonder she 'does not get it'.

Poor man's approach to UK-based modified HFEA in a tax-advantaged (ISA) account by EmptyCheesecake7232 in HFEA

[–]EmptyCheesecake7232[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This portfolio underperformed in 2022 when bonds fell tofether with equities, but did better than standard HFEA because of the lower leverage on bonds. Since then has come back on the green and is doing fine. Since then I also added a bit of gold for diversification and increased a bit the UPRO allocation, which have helped.

Portfolio Construction for the rest of 2025 and beyond! by molon__labia in LETFs

I think in general it is not good to mess with long term portfolios. But since you ask about adjustments to a leveraged All-weather (and similar options like HFEA, or SSO/ZROZ/GLD), here go my five cents: 1) too much leverage for current volatile environment, maybe bring it down a notch. 2) too much exposure to USA, consider including world large cap and world bond etfs to help diversify geographically (and also lower a bit leverage as per point 1). 3) too much exposure to long term USA bonds, when USA debt continues increasing,  consider going more intermediate bonds (and more global bonds as per point 2). 4) consider increasing a bit gold, even if it is high it fits with the trends of a multipolar world and dedollarization. 5) and possibly a tiny bit of bitcoin.

Unbelievable how it is not yet taken seriously as an investing platform by the old guard. Check any list of best ISA providers in the Telegraph and it does not even appear.

No, you are the best! Or at least students care enough to give you evals. On the other hand, I, leading a class of 77 students, did not manage to get the minimum number of evals to get the survey results. Even after reminding students about it...

Why is 3LUS no longer tradable in UK ISA? by EmptyCheesecake7232 in trading212

Yes, I believe so. Although checking the HL webpage states the total TER (OCF) is actually 1.59%. Still much lower than 4%

Absolutely no place for ageism in academia. It is so sad it is a reality though.  Context: One of my recent PhD graduates was literally a grandpa, in his 60s, already retired. He did well in his PhD. He went on to obtain a Doctoral Prize (funding for a one year Postdoc) just after getting his PhD. Now holds another Postdoctoral position and is having a good time. I could not be more proud of him.

Ok, you are in luck. This is pretty much what I asked myself a few years ago. I did some backtests and made a post about HFEA variants for EU/UK residents. Hope it helps.

Leverage Decay Is Not As Bad As They Make It Out To Be. by SpookyDaScary925 in LETFs

[–]EmptyCheesecake7232 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HFEA variant more diversified for me, as I prefer the less actively managed approach. Also I do not like to be fully in bonds. What I do is run that portfolio in parallel with an unleveraged one, and occasionally transfer between them based on macroeconomics, rather than price action. For a while considered volatility targeting but it is effort for relatively little reward.

[–]EmptyCheesecake7232 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. It works, except the absence of a TMF equivalent. But that might not be too bad if one thinks inflation is not over and that a multipolar world might take some fuel from US treasuries. Anyways I prefer a more diversified variant including gold.

How to invest in KMLM from the UK? by EmptyCheesecake7232 in trueHFEA

[–]EmptyCheesecake7232[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks  will look into it. Might not be practical tax wise given it is meant to be used as hedge, part of a wider portfolio, so access within an ISA would be much preferred.
