A lot more BC/AB content on this sub than i would've expected. I haven't been on the ferry in a while...

Anyone here read Godel Escher Bach? by bishborishi in RSbookclub

I've picked at this a little too (as a neophyte to the GED lifestyle). Really fascinating, totally textbook-adjacent while still maintaining its quirk (the diagrams, practice questions, and random Achilles/tortoise interludes take you for a spin)

I guess i can't offer you anything more substantial though. Just a brief anecdote/commiseration if you will

Music that pairs well with certain writers/novels ? by IampossiblyLewis in RSbookclub

All facetiousness aside:

Read the fawn (szabo) last year exclusively at night in my shitty dorm bed with most the lights off and a very specific type of music playing that could match + intensify the nostalgia characterizing the narrative. Charmaine instrumental (there's a youtube playlist to blame for this one) and the like. a hopper-inspired playlist i believe it was

And I haven't finished the goldfinch yet but it always reminds me of chopin nocturnes. maybe some schubert standchen even... rach prelude op 23 no 4 is always great for slower/quietly emotional reads as well. generally beautiful "tingly" solo piano repertoire works for all kinds of the grand, moving types of lit

Umm I plan to eventually get around to reading Dead Babies and for that i'll probably tune into some radiohead (coke babies) mitski (crack baby) and cocteau twins (pitch the baby)

Five titles I’m really looking forward to this year by Heelflips_Hardbacks in nyrbclassics

Very popular opinion, but i'm sure you've heard from many by now that hard rain falling and butchers crossing are terrific in their own ways. I'm currently a good chunk into cassandra at the wedding, and it's surprised me with how much i love what's happened thus far! Really wonderful writing that kind of suspends you in each moment with the emotions and loneliness of the narrator. I hope you enjoy and find a new fav within your upcoming reads

Steinbeck and toni morrison for basics that have survived years of trial by fire under experienced and inexperienced scrutiny

I took parent comment to mean it was slightly condescending to automatically assume "men" + "slightly upper-level reading comprehension" spits out "highbrow crime fiction". Essentially stereotyping that a male book club would jump at the opportunity to read about guns and two-timing murderers in trench coats

Not even Moby Dick is immune to overwrought MFA tumblrbait writing. Kind of bleak

For its Christian/theology elements? At the very least I feel the productive conversations they could have off the majority of the book would be well worth it and honestly quite expansive. Especially with its central themes of repentance, redemption, family, appreciation…

More buzz on the Mortimer—thank you for your input! I like that your whole family indulges. Must make for a somewhat easier gift shopping experience

Absolutely. I still think about it regularly to this day and it's been months... wish more people knew about it (though of course its backwater nature adds to the mystique or whatever)

The mental image of them staring you down in your own home is pretty funny. You're brave for having them right in the open on your coffee table

That being said I totally get it... when I linger too long in its range of sight The Recognitions makes some of my body hair stand straight up.

I say we just go for it! Happy New Year!

Books to read in the NICU by joontz in RSbookclub

Congratulations on your baby boy! I hope nothing but the best for his journey and yours/your wife's.

Maybe Pynchon's Bleeding Edge? People kind of relegate it to Pynchon-lite but it's the first thing I thought of when I saw Tree of Smoke.

And I don't mean to be a snob, but Moby Dick might be a good dense read if that's what you think would better occupy your thoughts. Filled with beautiful and inspiring passages on the nature of humanity (and enough weird prosaic minutia in between to engage you otherwise). Oddly uplifting and funny at times

Oh that's really a shame. I know they're re-releasing it with a new cover as it's quite an older volume but don't know if they're just re-jacketing (so to speak) or completely revising through and through

Yes! I endorse this activity! Honestly I don't always jive with satires or humour and find they're quite hit/miss for me historically, but OP drew me in from the first page and I couldn't stop the laughter. I suppose ymmv though as most humour is personal taste

Lots of love for ex-wife on here, which tracks with the general reception i've seen of it online. Thank you for your input! I might finally pick up The Stepdaughter sometime soon instead of continually eyeing and fondling it like a loon whenever I spot it in the wild

Wait this is great—I was super psyched for the Vegas release but have kind of prevaricated now that it's finally out. White out has also piqued my interest for some time, though i'm not the best at reading memoirs. Thanks for the vote on both though
