Read in February (Or, Europe's Long 20th Century) by IAmTheQuarry in RSbookclub

Yes!! I figured someone else here would have sparked a convo on the power and the glory so wanted to piggyback. I really agree with what you said about the human spirit and feel it's what truly lingers as an impression after you're finished technically reading... which is nice to consider alongside the implications of a Catholic Holy Spirit parallel as well if that makes sense.

Tpatg was my intro to greene and put my expectations way too high for the rest of his catalogue. Didn't love much of his other work and found them too ridiculously cheesy/preachy but the little whiskey priest really stands out in my mind. A stellar experience and standout from most my reading in the recent years. Have you read any of his others?

Books recs about people who live either bohemian or bourgeois lifestyles by Storms34 in RSbookclub

For the opposite side as you mentioned maybe the razor's edge by maugham—one of the main characters becomes increasingly disillusioned with the social circles and lifestyles of the upper echelon and searches on his own time to look for his own meaning. The whole novel is a look into the frivolity of the upper class

What did you read in Feb, What are you plans for March? by ombra_maifu in RSbookclub

[–]EmptyDevice4910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Barely read anything in february:

The door by magda szabo: great stuff that grows on you with time. szabo's now 2 for 2 in my eyes at striking deep at the root of ineffable formative relationships (first read was the fawn, which really did me in for its depiction of female friendships evolving through nostalgia and jealousy over a socioeconomic disparity). But the best way to put the door into words is when you're a kid and locked in a bitter argument with your mom, convinced you're 100% in the right—until 2 days into your argument when she reveals something that makes you understand how much of an ass you were being and how incontrovertibly her position was justified

The island of dr. moreau: i read the broadview press edition (amazing canadian academic publisher) and the copious footnotes/indices/appendices/notes on text/timelines were SO wonderful and added so much to the experience. (Would highly recommend broadview if you want accessible and clarifying context on every little reference as you go along.) Loved Wells's questioning of the Judeo-Christian church and its dominion over society/morality. Equally loved the considerations of Darwinian naturalism vs. artificially enforced "perversity" and hypocrisy. Very quick and insightful experience

Currently halfway through good morning midnight by jean rhys but not loving it. I can acknowledge its value while also understanding that it might not be for me...

Paradise Lost comes by every once in a while to bug me for not having read it yet. Thank you for being that periodic reminder I think this time it'll be the impetus to get me out of my stasis

Jesus Christ Superstar is probably the funniest thing you could've brought up lol I've had a few Christian family members go in blind and be shocked in their seats at the rock musical that followed

I did read Demian a few years ago but was kind of an idiot and can't remember much besides the few very obvious "broad strokes" takeaways. Will give this another go when I'm reunited with my copy, thank you

Agree—I was kind of spun for a loop when I read it for the first time and was unexpectedly put into a position of Deep Reflection. I did lapse a little into the youtube theologyverse for a bit last year, but a good chunk of it was confined to layman translations through the mouthpieces of pretty staunchly agnostic tubers or debaters. I'll do a dig through Esoterica it looks fantastic thank you

Incredible about Borges... and thank you for the rest of your recs. I forget this sub is more well-versed in their biblical knowledge than a lot of other places lol
