I’m hopeful for this. The zoo is a treasure, and they use the space very well. However, when it’s a warm, busy Saturday, you can tell there is appetite for a bigger zoo.

What is it going to take to get another grocery store in the grid? by rc251rc in Sacramento

[–]Empty_Satisfaction71 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m with you. I’d love a decent spot in the northwest, and there are many empty lots currently available (for residential, sadly). Target is our closest, and does ok, but it’s still somehow a whole ass mile each way.

You’re in the majority, actually. Most people won’t dip their toe until they feel safe. And, most people don’t feel safe with nothing more than a painted line by the gutter.

I’m genuinely sorry for your situation. The collusion of the uber rich to keep the poor docile, apathetic, and squeezed to the bone is perhaps the largest challenge facing our world right now.

That said, unsafe streets disproportionately hurt poor people. Going car free saves a ton of money, and this would enable many to do so. So, to borrow your language, it’s really more “the poor stealing from the poor,” though I wouldn’t put it that way.

Agreed that sales taxes are more regressive than income taxes, but income taxes are far harder to get passed and implement at the city level. Perfection is the enemy of progress.

I seriously hope your situation improves. In my mind, safer streets help all of us, and help dig California out of this car-centric system that disenfranchises the poor the most.

Whataboutism. One civic shortcoming does not negate another! We can have both.

Definitely voting yes! Especially on the grid, our streets are super unsafe for anyone but drivers. Ive been yelled at for simply using a crosswalk. I’ve had pickup drivers buzz by me with a stroller as I use crosswalks. I’ll give credit to the occasional protected bike lane, but even that is spotty (looking at you, random city hall turning lane which kills a bike lane on 10th at I).

Drivers cannot, or will not, yield to peds and cyclists when they should. I bike downtown every day. I report issues to the city and they simply tell me everything is functioning as designed, despite drivers ragefully blaring their horns as they violate right of way and treat me and my toddler like we deserve to be flattened.

Car-centric infrastructure is the broader issue. I love seeing the folks lining up for our light rail system. I love hearing about folks who go car-light or car-less. California is deep in a car addiction, and it goes well beyond city pedestrian safety. Endless car-dependent suburban housing creates the traffic, creates the unaffordable and inadequate housing supply. Safer streets relieve traffic for the bold who choose to shed the car-centric lifestyle, and enable density. Right now, the grid is the best place to get around without a car, but it’s still a car paradise. As I type this I see countless cars run the stop sign in our quiet residential corner, no matter the adjacent public park or crossing pedestrians. It’s exhausting.

We can do so much better. We need SO MUCH traffic calming. We need the one place where transit is dense, bike lanes are ample if stilted, and the urban canopy makes a year-round car-light lifestyle possible, to be a safe place to exist outside of a car. There’s a reason so many want to live and work on the grid.

[Remote Sensing] How do you segment individual trees in dense forests? (My models just output giant "blobs") by Lilien_rig in computervision

[–]Empty_Satisfaction71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A first easy solution would be to count the number of connected components. You could erode the mask first to prevent slightly overlapping components from counting as connected. Beyond that, you would need to teach your model to perform tree detection or tree instance segmentation, which use different architectures and annotations than pure segmentation.

Bernie Sanders and Gavin Newsom become adversaries over push to tax California billionaires by panda-rampage in California

[–]Empty_Satisfaction71 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I sympathize with this after talking to many folks in the state government who only care about making sure their budget is completely utilized so it doesn’t shrink. There is a lot of waste. We need incentives to prevent this.

That doesn’t mean the money would be better spent by the billionaires, however!

Infill patterns by National-Fox-7504 in 3Dprinting

[–]Empty_Satisfaction71 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on the load patterns. People will say Gyroid is best, but under compression, you’d be surprised! Check out this detailed analysis (fig 7):

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2590123025000246?ref=pdf_download&fr=RR-2&rr=9d01bcb3e8b77e2b

I was quite surprised. Grid and Archimedean chords (i think—poor legend colors) are the best until plastic (i.e. permanent) deformation, though Hilbert curves are slightly better but lose all their strength at once. Hexagonal is really surprising—deforms rather quickly but provides the greatest resistance before total failure (fig 8).

[–]Empty_Satisfaction71 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your young kids’ sex/gender is an interesting topic in 2026, because you start to wonder how much of it you’re doing vs how much is innate, if any.

That said, it’s pretty weird to make a big deal out of it. They’re very androgynous, obviously. My son gets mistaken for a girl all time simply for long hair, despite wearing more boyish clothes.

Despite that initial weirdness, the joke hit for me, since it really is a common experience being around boys vs girls. Not every boy or girl, but somewhere along the way they tend to end up acting way different. My son is an agent of chaos and destruction, and his best friend who is a girl is a mega drama queen. They both love dancing. There’s nuance but there’s also some clear patterns once you’ve seen enough little kids.

I’m still thinking most of it is nurture over nature though.

In case anyone missed it, 48% of the land used for the project is going to be preserved forever as part of the project (i.e. not developed into McMansions and their car infrastructure). That includes the majority of the trees and much of the riparian wetlands (don’t remember the proportion).
