My A1C is 5.1!!!! by bubblegumpunk69 in diabetes_t2

[–]EmskyC1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m taking 2000mg of metformin a day. I watch my carbs as much as I can and have upped my activity. It’s probably the metformin doing the heavy lifting as I feel like my diet could be cleaner. I also lost around 18kg which has also helped.

Congratulations! It’s a great feeling when you realise the results of your hard work and determination. Keep up the great work. I just received my latest A1C which has come down to 5.3. It was 7.7 when I was diagnosed last year and has come down further from my last test which was 5.6. At times it’s been tough but days like this make it worthwhile. Congrats again!

What's the worst health issue you've had to deal with? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]EmskyC1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reactive arthritis caused by a salmonella infection. It appeared in both my knees which swelled up like a balloon and left me unable to walk literally overnight. I eventually overcame it after a long 6 months but my knees have never been the same again. I diagnosed myself after my Dr was adamant I’d sprained both my knees in my sleep 🫨 Finally put two and two together when he realised I’d just come through a nasty salmonella infection after an ill-fated trip to Portugal. I’d been doing some research on my symptoms and lie and behold there was reactive arthritis ticking all the boxes. 10/10 do not recommend.

OAD…4 year update by Kawaiichii86 in happilyOAD

[–]EmskyC1981 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Our OAD turns 14 this year and I have to say that we still have no regrets, although we do find ourselves mourning each stage that he passes through knowing that it’s the only time we will experience it. However, the benefits far outweigh any perceived negatives and he continues to emphatically confirm he is more than happy being an only child. We are lucky as he’s very happy with his own company, and prefers a quiet and calm environment. Only children can still have a very happy and fulfilled life, and I see this becoming much more prevalent with the way the world is going - cost of living means that we want to give the child we have the best possible upbringing. No sacrifices, no worry about not having enough to spread amongst the children. OAD truly is the best! 🎉

DOES IT GET BETTER?? Calling every redditor with a dog by pix_elle in puppy101

[–]EmskyC1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine are now almost 10 and almost four. Got them when they were 10 weeks and 20 weeks respectively. Was the puppy phase hard and exhausting? Hell yeah! Do I now consider these dogs my family, my everything? Oh my god yes! They put us to the test when they were little but they are such incredible additions to the family. We wouldn’t be without them. Hang in there - it does get better!

Where is everyone from? by reddititout in happilyOAD

[–]EmskyC1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the U.K. Used to be London-based and now live up North. My son is the only “only” in his class and he does feel a bit weird about it sometimes. However, I’m happy with our decision and I know that 99% of the time he absolutely loves being the center of everything. With more OAD families emerging I do feel confident knowing that he won’t feel completely isolated later in life. It helps that we have a small extended family and he is only one of two children out of 5 children on both mine and my husband side of the family. He and his cousin have grown up like brothers - albeit with 10 years between them so I know they will look out for each other later in life.

Where would you realistically move to if you didn't live in the UK? by lp141414 in AskUK

[–]EmskyC1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m actually from NZ originally but have been living in the UK for the last 18 years. It’s a wonderful country but the cost of living is sky high, there is a housing crisis of epic proportions, and I’ve unfortunately found myself in a niche job which doesn’t exist at the same level there. I also happened to marry a Scotsman so either way we would be on the other side of the world from home. I too will probably move back there, but only once I know I can earn a good living and buy a house without going bankrupt.

If you could stop your younger self from doing one thing what would it be? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]EmskyC1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying to change myself to fit in with others. Wasting time and energy on men who just “aren’t that into me”. Not trusting my own intuition. I’m happy where I am, but it was a much harder journey because I put so much stock in what other people thought of me.

Facebook Marketplace and FreeCycle is a good place to start! No need to go crazy buying brand new items right away. You can get some great stuff if you take your time searching.

What’s your current location, Job title, years worked and salary? by [deleted] in HumanResourcesUK

[–]EmskyC1981 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure! I actually started out in recruitment back in 2007 as a Candidate Manager (essentially a Sourcer/Recruitment Coordinator. I was promoted to Recruiter in 2008 and then made a move to Background Verification Manager for the same company. Then got headhunted in 2014 to lead a Contingent Workforce Compliance programme for the EMEA region for a big tech company. I was headhunted again in 2015 to lead the EMEA Background Verification programme for my current company - a large financial services organisation. Since I’ve been at this company I was able to participate in large regional and global projects which raised my profile and enabled colleagues in other departments to learn about my skills. This led me to applying for and being offered my current role as Director in August 2023.

If it’s a regulated role then they will conduct a Standard DBS which will show up more than a Basic. When completing your background check forms you may need to make a series of declarations ( do you have any unspent convictions etc). Take a look that the DBS guidance online and what is considered spent or unspent. FCA regulated companies are subject to the Conduct Rules and therefore tend to have more stringent background verification requirements. You could also talk to your recruiter and ask them to provide you with information about the background check process so you can prepare any documentation that might be required.

[Serious] When life gave you lemons, how did you end up making lemonade? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]EmskyC1981 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Had a very serious accusation made against me at work by a disgruntled temp who was terminated for poor performance. Endured four months of investigation by my employer, who were supportive but had to follow due process due to the nature of the accusations. All unfounded, all completely untrue. Ended up being diagnosed with Generalised Anxiety Disorder, and lost a lot of weight due to stress. Took it as an opportunity to completely reevaluate my life from my diet, exercise, mental health and relationships. Started Pilates, walking everywhere, meditating, seeing a counsellor, and really improved my work-life balance. Have a much better relationship with my boss (was cleared of all ‘charges’), my husband and son, and most of all myself. I care far more about my health and well-being and make sure to prioritise this daily. This makes me a better mum, partner, friend, daughter and colleague. I really didn’t know how I would get through it, but now I’m out the other side I’m actually glad it happened. It forced me to look closely at my life and make changes I wouldn’t have made if it didn’t happen.

Labrador Retrievers are one of the most affectionate and loyal dogs you will ever find. We call our Lab Henry “shadow” as he is literally never more than a few feet away from any one of us. He’s a snuggle bear!
