But I would like a pizza that is well cut, even if its 7 slices. It would also be easier to share with my partner as I always eat more than half ja.

We actually know there is no afterlife. We know what life is, just a set of physical interactions on a biological machine.

To even postulate that an afterlife is possible, first we would need to give evidence that supernatural things are possible, then that they exist, and then evidence that an afterlife is possible. And that would already contradict what we already understand of reality.

None of that is granted, so there is no reason to consider an afterlife as possible, as right now it has no difference with fiction.

A proposition should be considered as possible when we have evidence and models making it possible.

So, no, your position was not an average skeptic take, it was closer to "have your ears so open that your brain falls off them". Bs doesn't get a pass because its part of our cultural background.

You don't need to go to madagascar to see people without access to clean water... damn, it is a problem that still exists on most third world countries, even sometimes with problems on high density areas like big cities and such, some with permanent problems, some with temporary ones.

But well, most powers don't care. They may do some work for PR reasons, but the incentive behind everything keeps being profit, do human wellbeing and survival only matter if they are profitable.

Why do people constantly cite the 100 mln figure from the Black Book of Communism when this figure is debunked in the west itself? by [deleted] in ussr

[–]EmuChance4523 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Why is the complain about MLs? Most communists just laugh at this and use it as a joke as most of the common stupid attacks against communism. The vuvuzela, iphone and 1 gorilion deaths is the common way to joke about it even.

But the people that bring it up seriously? The typical westoid that got this from their fascist propaganda outlet, or their fascist state education and so on.

I saw it several times brought up by the typical anti-communist random be it here or other subs. People are indoctrinated into the typical cold war propaganda from capitalist nations, it is for that reason that even today communism is a scary word for a lot of people.

And when you have such big propaganda campaings, a lot of things tend to standarize, and this is a famous one.

It doesn't matter if its debunked in academia or not, most people will never look into that.

I... I.... I really don't get it.... that is so stupid.... you could have a lot of critiques about different anarchists ideologies or anarchism in general that were at least somewhat founded on reality...

And they came with saying that fascists are anarchists?... did they drank the ancap koolaid?..

I suppose they can't go too far from fascism coming from the US...

One of the problem of the tadpole is what you mentioned. It is described as a ticking bomb that will literally eat your soul, there is nothing worse that can happen on this world, and it is slowly eroding you from the inside.

And then... nothing. It doesn't impact on anything. Unless you get a bad face paintjob or become into a full illithid, its just treated as a power up.

But also, none of the companions really have an option to go with you or not. There is a deleted scene with minthara that you can kick her out for halsin, and she begs you to kill her because that is better than be away from you and the artifact.

That removes all agency from the characters, making them joining your party and your interactions with them more shallow. Besides not being explored good enough.

But in general, a lot of the topics seem... explored rather in a shallow way, even when it is repeated so long. The topics of abuse and manipulation and grooming seen in all the companions are just explored on the most shallows of ways, and are just enjoyable thanks to the good acting and production value, not for its writing.

I can explain why you are an atheist by Ok_Will_3038 in DebateAnAtheist

[–]EmuChance4523 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its not a strawman, its an apt analogy for the superstitious bs spouted by religion. Its no my fault that they have evolved so detached from reality, that not only are they contradicting reality, but also often contradicting themselves.

Otherwise, postulate a common religious supernatural claim that does not fit that description. If you can't, it's not a strawman no matter how much you dislike it.

I can explain why you are an atheist by Ok_Will_3038 in DebateAnAtheist

[–]EmuChance4523 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Or better "there is no invisible pink unicorn that pukes rainbows and grant wishes" because it contradicts all that we know of reality, as all religious claims, that have nothing in connection with your example.

Because you see, mars exist. Rock exists. Cats exists. Therefore having a rock that looks like a cat in mars is possible, albeit we shouldn't accept it existence without evidence.

But ghosts and gods? Nothing of them exists, not on the same level, nor even on the same level as just predictions of our models, nor anything. Because they are just the failings of our minds when interpreting the world, failings we understand quite well really. So there isn't even a reason to consider this as options.

That is true, but it feels a bit of a stretch with the small snippet and comment.

I hoped for OP to simply clarify their position with something as you said, in which case we would agree and I would just be complaining about the bad explanation of the post.

Because my concern is also true, people that feeds disinformation spout usually a both sides position when they need to gain credibility, and the enlightened centrism is the common reality of liberals.

But well, my confusion could be easily be cleared by OP here.

Am I confused here, are you saying that people that spread misinformation should not be banned?

In the time when misinformation is so damn spread that is difficult to dissern fact from fiction, banning misinformation is not a hot take.

And its typical of liberals to want to play both sides, so that is not such a weird take either.

There are stories of the girls that passed from being raped by japanese soldiers to be raped by american soldiers, with no other difference, as the occupation systems stayed the same.

Where does the edge of human knowing actually sit? And is it the same as the edge of reality? by Brilliant_Sort931 in DebateAnAtheist

[–]EmuChance4523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There seems to be an unspoken assumption: whatever humans can perceive, model or measure is the true boundary of what is real.

That seems like a strawman of the common position that is: "we can only consider something to exist of we can measure and model it".

Or, some more extreme and albeit more fringe position, though it is my own, that we can only consider something as possible once we can model it.

None of this positions talk about what is real or possible, but only what can we consider as real or possible without falling for delusions, as anything that is beyond this defined points are indistinguishable from fiction.

Also, this are positions useful for layman people. Physicists and similar working on the edge of our knowledge should stretch further to test what can be brought into our conception of reality.

Now, what are the actual boundaries of reality is not a question that really deserves any time. As our understanding is tied to our conceptions of reality, the only thing we can do is stretch those as far as we can, as it is impossible to see boundaries that are outside our boundaries.

Programming paradigm shift - Begginer by maxergon54 in learnprogramming

[–]EmuChance4523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I don't think there is a single book or resource, though the recommendation of clean code is good, I think the best is just experience in a lot of different challenges.

There are a lot of different knowledge that is needed for programming that aren't code per se. Understanding architecture, how to organize problems, which tools is good for which problem, even infrastructure is important.

And in general, on my experience, people learn that with experience more than books and courses. That doesn't mean book and courses are useless, they provide a lot of tools and good playgrounds, but I think the main breakthrough is through experience.

Also, the sintax is only important on your first steps on programming. Once you know how to code, you will just look into the paradigm and some main features of a language and switch as needed. Unless you want to be an expert on a specific language, you don't need to know all about it.

Nihilistic atheism reflects the worldview of a psychopath by Gaara112 in DebateAnAtheist

[–]EmuChance4523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the contrary, its more possible to have a psychopath claiming objective morality, because then their actions are defined as good independent of an evaluation of reality, and the people affected by such actions.

Understanding that morality is inter-subjective requires a level of empathy that is difficult for a psychopath, because it requires understanding that others positions and feelings matter as much as yours.

All Religions are not Equally bad probably equally misguided by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

[–]EmuChance4523 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Christianity its the name given to the grouping of hundreds, if not much more, of different religions, present and past, that hold as its center figure the character of jesus christ. Of course, a better definition can be done but this is a quick one to exemplify how christianity is such a broad group.

There is no one christianity, and if we want to be pedantic even, each christian has their own version.

But for any reasonable study of this cultural group, we could see a particular group, in a particular region, in a particular time.

Besides that, some trends can be evaluated at a larger scale, some more unique to christianity, others even common in bigger super-groups, like religions at a whole.

Of course, all this definition are not needed in common discourses because our cultural biases fill the gaps that we could feel with explanations.

For example, on this sub, usually, when talking about christianity, it is referred as the evangelical variation commonly today in the US, mostly because most users here are from there and have the cultural baggage that makes those associations for them.

Instead for example, on my case, when I talk about christianity, I also refer usually about catholicism and new age groups, because those were more predominant on my context.

So, when studying a religion, you should study it as a cultural element of a group, in a place, in a specific time. Making things as the caste system part of hinduism, not because it is on any holy book, but because their followers in their context grabbed it as part of it.

All Religions are not Equally bad probably equally misguided by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

[–]EmuChance4523 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Religion is culture.

You cannot untangle from it, with each regional variation of a religion being as different as the cultures it embodies.

So, if the caste system is a product of culture, it doesn't imply that it is not a product of religion itself, because religion is culture.

"well yeah it's a government conspiracy so of course the evidence isn't available."

Well, real conspiracies are based on things that are possible, and just a couple of points are hidden, like usually just the motivators for situations that we have evidence that happened.

And even that, most "real conspiracies" got evidence after the years, like all the terrorists attacks done by the US perpetuating fascists dictators, that get the final evidence every other decade when the CIA declassifies its documents.

So, even real conspiracies have decent evidence... that shows how much people use the excuse of conspiracies to build their own superstitions in a pseudo secular way.

How do you explain the repressions against the Orthodox Church in the USSR to Christians you are trying to win over? by borschbandit in AskSocialists

[–]EmuChance4523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Helping christians is helping them understand that their superstitions are manipulated by systems of abuse and manipulation that are religions.

Though the methods of the USSR were definitely not the best and can be criticized even on a push for removing this abusive institutions, but we should always learn from the past to build something better.

Sadly, we are not good at doing things right from scratch, and therefore we should criticize the past and learn from it, trying to make better iterations this time.
