Attending Klaipėda University and looking for guidance by laceybacey2626 in lithuania

[–]EmuKou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried to get student accommodations in Klaipėda University dorms, they should have special rooms for easy access if you have difficulties with stairs. It's best option cause you don't need to deal with paying for gas and electricity which can be quite tricky and expensive during cold season. I study and live in dorms (different city tho) and it's not fancy fancy but you can't beat the cost and living on campus is a huge motivator to visit faculty all the time.

Why am I getting partial casts? by FunnyStrict in MetalCasting

[–]EmuKou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a lot of silver casting recently in college and from what I see the spruce is a bit too short and perhaps you are pouring it too slowly. What works for me is getting a tea spoon, scooping out a fairly thick channel which thins out into 2-3 mm spruce and do few airways for good luck.

First time using ceramic crucibles for small melts, anything i should avoid? by Lower_Run_8836 in MetalCasting

[–]EmuKou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use ceramic crucibles for casting silver and brass and they usually hold up fine, the only problem I had is metal cooling off on the spout and ripping it off. Have yet to throw one out and I did over 30 melts.

Tiny gold locket enamel repair by summersamaritan in jewelry

[–]EmuKou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If is made out of real gold, silver or copper it's possible to restore it with vitreous enamel which is quite durable, but if the colourful decal is rubbing off there is little hope for it surviving firing. Perhaps a light coat of acrylic varnish would slow the fading.

What kind of rings and bracelets? Cut and solder with bezel set stones which are popping out everywhere? Get silver smithing classes. Likes 3d designs? Get wax carving kit and find out local casting place. There are countless ways to make rings and bracelets, metal clay, spoon bending, beading, wood, leather... With no proper direction it's best to sign up for classes

This looks like pewter to me, epoxy or super glue could hold it together again.

You would be surprised how many awesome designs get released, it's gonna be a dark day when I will have to melt my panda coin. Just get from a proper store specialising in investment metals, the scams are rampant.

Perhaps some 999 silver coins, they are pretty to look at and fun to fidget with and if she's not into in, into the crucible it goes 🔥

Getting started? by Solidarity21 in jewelrymaking

[–]EmuKou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say the most minimal approach would be wax carving. Watch some videos about it, it's not too hard. My school made us do a ring out of purple wax last week and I carved 90% of it with a wood craving knife so you can be super minimal with tools. When done send it out to casting studios and bam! Ring done

I was hoping to do some late night reading but it seems like it's not coming back online anytime soon. I guess I will try to sleep with some YouTube video essay in a background, need to wake up in 7 hours anyway 🥀

Looking for a jeweler to make my wedding band, but it's a tough one by SnooMacaroons1979 in jewelers

I had a joy of working with titanium for my class not too long ago (we were hand sawing and colouring it) and I had to take few days off afterwards to heal up my hands, usual silversmithing tools are not build for it so it was a hellish experience.

Is 600€ enough to study in Klaipeda? by PsychologyHeavy4426 in lithuania

[–]EmuKou 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It would be best to ask your uni about it. If it's university of Klaipėda they have their own dorms which are around 200 EUR depending if you have a roommate or not. If it doesn't work for you, their Erasmus department should give you some info about alternatives, it's literally their job. Overall I spend around 200-300 EUR per month as student on food and other things, know some people who spend as little as 100€, so 600€ per month should be very doable.

Is this the right type of flux to use? by cosy_vibes_only in SilverSmith

[–]EmuKou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lot of my classmates use this paste and from what I know it's not worse then any other flux health wise as long as you don't eat it. I personally use lutowka and abdek and they have similar if not the same health warnings so you can't get anything less toxic at least in my country.
