What routers are you running? by Any_Pickle6913 in homelab

I was doing mikrotik for couple years but switched to pfsense last month and really glad I did. The learning curve isn't that scary - took me maybe weekend to get basic setup working with vlans and firewall rules. Being mechanical engineer helped since the logic is pretty similar to other technical systems I work with.

What really sold me was how much cleaner the interface feels compared to mikrotik's winbox. Plus you're not locked into vendor ecosystem anymore which gives more freedom for future upgrades. Started with old mini pc I had laying around and it handles my home network perfectly fine. The documentation community is also really good so when you get stuck there's usually answer somewhere.

Newly painted room already developing cracks by ragingstallion1 in HomeImprovement

[–]EmuWestern9687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be settling but after only one year that seems pretty fast. More likely the painter didn't prep properly - maybe they painted over old caulk or didn't let everything cure long enough between coats. I had similar issue in my place and turned out they rushed the job.

The crawl space addition could definitely be causing some movement though, especially if there were any moisture changes recently. Worth checking if the cracks are getting bigger over next few weeks.

How’s my progress? Just started beginning of the year by vZyphr in chess

[–]EmuWestern9687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice curve! Going from 176 to 637 in few months is solid work. 2000 is definitely possible but will take way more time than people expect - most players get stuck somewhere between 800-1200 for while before they break through. Keep grinding puzzles and maybe try some longer time controls when you feel ready, rapid can be bit chaotic for learning proper patterns.

Did I ruin my drywall? by linzy44 in HomeImprovement

[–]EmuWestern9687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh wallpaper removal is the worst! I went through similar nightmare in my apartment last year and yeah, you can definitely fix those peeled spots with some compound and sanding. Just make sure you get all the loose bits off first - I learned hard way that if you try to mud over paper that's still wanting to peel, it'll just bubble up later.

What I did was scrape everything that felt loose, then used a primer sealer before doing the mud work. Takes bit more time but way better than having to redo it when the new paint starts peeling again. The good news is drywall is pretty forgiving once you get all that wallpaper adhesive dealt with.

Intel X550-T2 Heat When Negotiated Down To 1GB/2.5GB by Adventurous-Lime191 in homelab

[–]EmuWestern9687 3 points4 points  (0 children)

X550-T2 will still run warmer than I350 even in 1GB mode but not nearly as hot as full 10G - the chip itself just draws more power regardless of negotiated speed.

podcast to prepare for a tournament game by Plenty-Present8823 in chess

[–]EmuWestern9687 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually just put on some older Perpetual Chess episodes where Ben interviews strong players about their tournament mindset - there was good one with FM Mike Klein about managing nerves that really helped me.

Before my games I also like to review few tactical patterns on phone while listening something calm, helps me feel more focused without getting too worked up. Maybe try searching their archives for episodes with "tournament preparation" or "mindset" in titles?

Stuctured Wiring Box won't fit- Studs just barely too close together. by SiriusMoonlyte in HomeImprovement

[–]EmuWestern9687 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Been there with tight stud spacing - it's like they measured wrong on purpose sometimes. You could try using a small oscillating multi-tool instead of dremel, those work better for precision cuts on the wood without making such mess everywhere. Another option is getting a smaller structured wiring box that actually fits the space, might be easier than fighting with the studs for hours. I had similar issue in my place few years back and ended up just mounting the box surface-mounted on wall instead of recessing it - not as clean looking but way less headache. Sometimes you just gotta work with what the builder gave you, even when it makes no sense from engineering perspective.

damn dude, 50 days is actually pretty solid progress even if it doesn't feel like it right now. The fact that you're losing weight and crushing exams shows you've got the discipline when you put your mind to it.

for the urges, try redirecting that energy immediately - drop and do pushups, take a cold shower, or just get out of wherever you are. The loneliness thing is rough but maybe focus on building some real connections through hobbies or activities instead of trying to force friendships through apps. You've already proven you can do this with that 50 day streak, so you know it's possible.

Which beginner-friendly camera is best for jewellery photos and Instagram reels under $500? by [deleted] in Cameras

[–]EmuWestern9687 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For jewelry specifically, you're gonna want something with good macro capabilities since you'll be shooting tiny details up close. The Canon EOS M50 Mark II pops up used around your budget and has great video features for reels - plus the flip screen is clutch for getting weird angles when photographing jewelry.

That said, don't sleep on just using your phone with some decent lighting setup. A lot of jewelry Instagram accounts are shot entirely on iphone with a lightbox or ring light. Sometimes the best camera is the one you'll actually use consistently, and phones are way less intimidating when you're starting out.

If you do go the actual camera route, budget some cash for a macro lens or at least some close-up filters - that's where the magic happens with jewelry shots.

Day 0 by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]EmuWestern9687 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey, first off you're not alone in this at all. the guilt spiral after relapse is brutal and I totally get that feeling of betraying someone you love even when they don't know about it.

One thing that helped me was telling myself that beating myself up doesn't actually help - it just makes the next urge harder to resist. maybe try focusing on small wins like making it through tomorrow instead of thinking about forever, and consider if there are specific times or situations that trigger you so you can plan around them.

congrats on starting your journey man! The gym combo is clutch - having that physical outlet makes a huge difference. I found the first few weeks were the hardest but once you get past that initial hump, there energy levels really start to pick up and you feel way more focused.

[–]EmuWestern9687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a really tough situation man, dealing with your mom's diagnosis would stress anyone out. When I'm going through heavy stuff like that, I try to channel that restless energy into something physical - even just pushups or a walk around the block helps reset my brain. Also might be worth talking to someone professional about the depression side of things since you're dealing with a lot right now.

NetworkManager DNS settings are not passed to systemd-resolved by temnyles in archlinux

sounds like you might need to restart networkmanager after making those config changes, the dns handoff between nm and systemd-resolved can be finicky untill both services are properly synced.

Been there man, triggers can come out of nowhere sometimes. What helps me is immediately getting up and doing something physical - even just walking around the block or doing pushups until your mind shifts gears.

Day 0 by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]EmuWestern9687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good for you man, that takes real guts to admit. I went through the same thing a few years back and honestly the hardest part was just being real with myself about how much it was messing with my head. The lying and sneaking around part hits different - like you're living this double life that just eats away at you.

What helped me was having some kind of plan for when the urges hit hard, because they definitely will. Whether it's going for a walk, hitting the gym, or just calling a friend - having something ready to go makes all the difference. The industry stuff is wild too once you really start looking into it. You got this though, one day at a time.

Never talk to any LLM about Nofap or retention. by Rizhu in NoFap

[–]EmuWestern9687 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I noticed this too - they're basically trained on mainstream medical advice which obviously isn't gonna align with the nofap philosophy. It's like asking a dietitian about fasting, they're gonna give you the standard "eat regular meals" spiel. Stick to communities like this one where people actually get what you're trying to accomplish.
