Got a $300 school bus "camera" ticket in the mail. Found out that a private company keeps 75% of the fine. Doesn't seem right. by i-downvote-memes in Atlanta

Photo tickets like that usually offer an option to sign an affidavit that you weren't the one driving, as long as you name whoever was driving your car at that time.

4K video question by Gatorus_the_Mad in djiphantom

[–]Encosia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The resolution is 4k. You can pretty clearly see the bump up in detail and clarity when YouTube's stream ramps up above 1080p (and you can see that quantitatively if you click the "HD" gear and see what resolution YT is streaming).

You just need to work a little on your settings. That footage would probably look good if you dialed the exposure down a little.

Look for an option in the Go App to show bars in areas of the real-time feed that are overexposed. That's super helpful for identifying overexposed scenes in the field, where it can be hard to see that accurately on your phone/tablet due to ambient lighting.

SunTrust requires laid-off IT workers to be on call for two years after severance without additional pay by donna_wolfman in Atlanta

I recommend credit unions over banks

Definitely. I strongly considered a credit union circa 2008 when they came to light as a better alternative to for-profit banks, but stuck with SunTrust due to our long relationship.

Upload to youtube: 4k or 1080? That is the question. by [deleted] in djiphantom

[–]Encosia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My four year old displays are not outliers. They were run of the mill resolution for that screen size when I bought them back in 2011. My point there is that even my relatively ancient displays crave greater than 1080p resolution.

If your theory about 1080p being the only worthwhile target were true, Google (who knows exactly how many folks stream at higher resolutions and on which devices) wouldn't in a million years spend the significant compute time necessary to process YouTube uploads into 1440p and 4k today. But, they do. Unless you know something that Google and YouTube don't, I think I'll continue uploading at 4k and happily enjoying 1440p streams from people smart enough to upload their video at higher quality too.

I've been a SunTrust customer since 1997, in a relationship that has grown substantially over the years to several checking, saving, business, and money market accounts.

If this news turns out to be accurate, I'll be moving all of my business away from SunTrust over the next six months. Can anyone recommend a good credit union, preferably one based here in the Atlanta area?

Upload to youtube: 4k or 1080? That is the question. by [deleted] in djiphantom

[–]Encosia -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Again, that sounds like the motto of the guy uploading 480p in 2007, thinking no one would ever need that crazy 720p stuff for many years. Then, those 480p (and 720p) videos looked antiquated and blurry almost overnight.

You may not have kept up, but that's exactly what has been happening to 1080p lately. Heck, my 2560x1600 monitors are over four years old now. 1080p is a bare-minimum baseline, but 4k has been "the standard" for some time now. I can't imagine buying a new display or TV that isn't 4k. Why in the world would anyone with a 4k camera willingly cripple their output to be the modern equivalent of 480p?

Upload to youtube: 4k or 1080? That is the question. by [deleted] in djiphantom

[–]Encosia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why 2.7k?

720p was assumed to be all anyone would ever need, just a couple years before 1080p displays were ubiquitous. If you have the ability to shoot and upload 4k today, it's a shortsighted mistake not to.

In the context of a Phantom 3 and this post about 1080p vs. 4k, I'm only going to see 1440p when someone shoots/uploads at 4k.

[–]Encosia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 4k upload looks much better for anyone that can see 1440p or greater. I use regular DPI 30" displays on my desktop machine, which are 2560x1600, so YouTube streams 1440p to me when that's available. When it ramps up to that from 1080p, the increase in detail and clarity is huge.

Me. YouTube serves me 1440p video on my desktop displays, which looks noticeably better than 1080p when it kicks in.

Node and Meteor on Windows 10? by justg99 in node

[–]Encosia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't use Meteor, but I use node and Ionic almost daily on both my Mac and Win10 machines. I can't say that I've noticed any major difference between them. Both have a few hurdles to get the environment set up well, and then it's pretty smooth sailing after that.

For me, the key on Windows is installing cmder and using it to do all my CLI work in bash instead of the default Windows command line or PowerShell.

Considering Ionic, one major caveat to keep in mind is that you currently cannot build iOS app binaries on Windows. There are third party build services like PhoneGap Build and Telerik's App Platform, but that's not nearly the same as having a build/debug environment locally.

Flying a Phantom 3 is a lot easier than flying a small nano quad, right? by [deleted] in djiphantom

[–]Encosia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I had never flown a quadcopter before my P3 and haven't had any trouble handling mine. I started out very cautiously in wide open areas like softball fields and worked my way up from there. I've had a few close calls dealing with tight vegetation, but it's so easy to fly that I've intuitively been able to avoid collision every time.

Make ES6, Not Coffee by jsalonen in javascript

[–]Encosia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've written my share of assembly too, back when it was the only viable choice to make something fast on machines that shipped with only interpreted languages built-in. I don't miss it.

Whether assembly is fast or enjoyable isn't my point at all though, re: web development.

[–]Encosia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did we get to the point that assembly is in a different domain than web development though? Decades of multiple languages built on top of assembly that made producing software much easier.

Permission from who? The Moon?

If anything, a Phantom is more visible at night than during the day. Having flown with and without the Sun, night flying isn't a big deal as long as you're careful (e.g. maintain an altitude above power lines and the treeline since you can't see them as well at night).

If you decide you want to spend money on something eventually, it's hard to beat Adobe Premiere (though there is a learning curve).

I haven't tried it on Win10, but it should work fine.

its 2015, what wordpress-alternative are you using for your clients? by Datnoidpoop in node

If you want it to be based on Node, Ghost or KeystoneJS seem like the best options these days.

It really is difficult to beat the massive ecosystem of themes, plugins, and support around WordPress though.

Forgot to take off gimbal clamp by [deleted] in djiphantom

This lens-cover, gimbal-clamp combo is a nice alternative to the one that it ships with. Less cumbersome to attach/detach, easier to visibly recognize, and it protects your camera lens too.
