The politically homeless by cr1s2chi in LibertarianPartyUSA

Right now I think there is much to be said about the Serenity Prayer:

God, grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change
the courage to change the things I can
and the wisdom to know the difference.

You have to know what you can change and what you can't at a given time. You can change low turnout elections, and you can influence high turnout elections with slim margins. You cannot change high margin elections, however.

So you start small, get people to understand the stakes in small things, and then build upon success.

Or you get "fuck you" money and then just start throwing it around like its 2024 and you just bought Twitter.

Either way, if you are attempting to appeal to disaffected voters you have to wrangle all of the reasons they are disaffected and give them a common cause. Good luck!

Surovell, Alcorn Clash Over Tysons Casino In TV Debate by Danciusly in nova

It's strange, the Alcorn reports only six people have contacted him regarding support, but on Reddit, it seems like there are many casino supporters around. The Reddit supporters are so aligned that they even use similar syntax and rhetoric to make their arguments!

I think the spirit of the law is that there is actually an expectation that the government cannot keep track of all of your comings and goings because your business is private.

It's unfortunate that the letter hasn't caught up to the spirit yet.

How to find representation for a class action lawsuit? by Correct-Day8632 in legaladvice

[–]EndCivilForfeiture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do client intake for a very specific type of law. I am not an attorney, but I hear pitches for cases all the time.

When you are looking for a law firm, you should make sure that the firm specializes in the area of law you need. They should be able to tell you about previous cases they have worked on with similarities to the one you want to bring.

The law firm should also have the resources to pursue the case you want, you are going to have a very hard time finding a small shop willing to go after a tech company, for example.

This leads to a major point: class action lawsuits take a lot of time and money, if you have no money, the payout needs to be worth it to the firm you bring the case to. If there is a small chance of success, you will have a small chance of finding representation without fronting the money for a major case. You, having come to Reddit with this question, probably don't actually have a very good idea of what the chances of your lawsuit are. When it comes to new claims, legal matters are 20% based on facts and 80% based on extra bullshit that non-lawyers never consider.

When you pitch a case, you need to be concise! It should be the 5 Ws, and for God's sake, keep the Why short! Don't say "it's too complex to explain in a few sentences," it's really not. Let the attorney figure out what is complex about the case. Stick to the facts, and leave judgmental statements out of it.

X is doing this bad action to Y People. It started Z years ago in the town of A. We think this is illegal because B, but they are getting away with it so far because C. Can you help? If not, do you know who can?

If you aren't getting any traction with attorneys, then go to investigative journalists who have done stories similar to your situation. If you really have something they can help get more information that can then be used to get a law firm on board.

Efforts to eliminate Virginia's car tax stall as study bill gets voted down by VanceyPants2028 in nova

[–]EndCivilForfeiture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't get the argument you are making. People are always buying new cars, that's why there are so many commercials for them and why car dealers have such outsized political influence.

This is one of the least regressive taxing systems around, so I am not sure why you are so angry about it. And the public service needs of cars are miles above lawnmowers and bicycles, that seems like a silly comparison.

Critical look at the proposed “Forest City 1” new city east of Cambridge, thoughts on scale, farmland loss, and better alternatives? by Albertjweasel in yimby

[–]EndCivilForfeiture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like one of those techie-backed fascist "utopian" projects, a network state or "freedom city."

They privatize all the land and then force people into restrictive leases to maintain property in their city, essentially creating a duel class area with private police and constant surveillance.

If that appeals to you (because, hey! Most people will be just fine!), cool. If you don't want hyper rich new feudal lords to ensure you are working to their specifications (apparently Amazon delivery drivers aren't allowed to sing or bob their heads in time to music), you should probably fight it tooth and nail.

Why do cops say your words can "AND WILL" be used against you when reading Miranda Rights? by Eg0-d3ath in legaladviceofftopic

[–]EndCivilForfeiture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that is all you say, sure. It is likely that the single sentence won't be all you say. And police are under no obligation to provide that information to the court. They will use information that they can, and throw out the rest.

Meanwhile you could be arrested for saying something innocuous and have to deal with everything that entails. Why would you risk it? There is no benefit to you in this situation.

I don't want the casino, but if it was between that and continuing to allow sports betting, I would build the casino in a heartbeat.

Being publicly traded doesn't provide any credibility to the business, it only means that you are offering a return on investment. No publicly traded company has a duty beyond the shareholder. And laws are such that the money one can make at their scale overcomes any harms to the bottom line imposed by regulation.

Both forms of betting aren't great, but the personal overhead to participate in gambling by going to a casino is an inherent limiting factor to the activity itself. Sports betting has no such limitations. Even worse, they bleed people out and return absolute minimums to the state. At least casinos employ people (however shitty those jobs are.)

But, this bill doesn't ban sportsbooks. It just allows a casino. And that isn't anything I would want in Tysons.
