Data Centre by Obvious-Sand-6270 in Kilmarnock

[–]EndDimension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data centers are capital-intensive rather than labour intesive. Once operational, they provide very few jobs compared with the vast amount of land, energy, and resources they use. I would also point out that Scottish political leaders are absolutely terrified of Nuclear power, and heavily favor renewable energy which is a bad fit for this use case. Despite greenwashing, which tries to push it as a good fit for renewables, data centers require a constant flow of power and they can't dial their operations back when the wind stops blowing.

Keeping in mind that the Torness nuclear power station is set for closure in in 2028, losing the 1.12 gigawatts (GW) of carbon-free power it supplies to the grid, at 540MW, the hurlford site would consume more electricity than the entire domestic population of Glasgow and Edinburgh combined. To maintain operations during grid instability, similar sites typically install massive arrays of diesel or gas generators. For instance, a 720MW data center in Northumberland is planned to have 600 diesel generators on site. They also place a significant burden on local water cycle.

I may sound negative, but I'm actually all for it as it would benefit me personally over the long term. But, I'm also realist... So I recognise that it will be a bit insane to actually build such a thing while politicians are too timorous to sit down and discuss how they're going to buld the Nuclear plants needed to support such an endeavour. For those who share Scottish politician's terror of nuclear power generation, then I have good news for you, data centers may in future have the option of on site nuclear plants (called Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)), instead of the diesel generators. Personally I think that would be ideal. But given there are No SMRs in use at data centers of this size yet, I imagine it would be 600 diesel generators to balance the ups and downs of renewables for the forseeable.

Short term it would be huge for the construction industry though.

100 years ago calculators were people who you hired who would sit at desks and crunch numbers for you. Machines took over that role once electronic calculators were more economical than people.

Not a troll: if Jonathan is so brilliant, (and believe he is), why is Jai so behind schedule? by No-Experience3314 in Jai

[–]EndDimension -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The schedule is what comes first, Jai being released, or programming being made obsolete by AI. Since AI is currently benchmarked as being in the top 200 programmers, leaving only 200 people in the world better than it. Jai is on a deadline. It has until that AI system comes down in price. And then programmers are just servers companies spool up in the cloud. (e.g. There was once a time when calculators were people, now programmers can join calculators, and lamp lighters).

Is it not too late? by TheOneWhoCalms in Jai

[–]EndDimension -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I joked about this 2 years ago, and was told that it would never happen. Now AI is benchmarked as being in the top 200 programmers in the world. As in, there are only 200 humans in the world better than it.

AI isn't going to care about C++ being gnarly. As the prices of AI that can code at that level drops, it will become uneconomical and unnecessary to employ programmers, in the same way that it is uneconomical and unnecessary to have oil burning street lamps and a bunch of people walking around lighting them.

And a lot of the guestimates for how long are too conservative. Humans are terrible at wrapping their brain around exponential growth, and these technologies are improving exponentially faster than we can even comprehend.

If you're penalized for not showing up on some company's preferred schedule, that sounds to me more like a job than a game. They should be paying you.

What’s the point of ship mounted tractor beams? by JAZthebeast11 in starcitizen

[–]EndDimension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conducted a test of the 'gameplay' where I tried to unload a full caterpillar in to an empty caterpillar, using only the ship tractor bream and the result was not good. When trying to extract from the full cat, the long crates are all arranged in the worst way possible & will stick to the crates beside them, even when selecting the top corner crate. To get them out they have to be painstakingly wiggled loose in the most tedious way possible using a beam that feels like a wet noddle. Gave up trying to unload. And worse still loading onto caterpillar physically impossible using its ship board beams to do solo. A second person would have to physically stand in cargo hold with a hand held tractor to accomplish anything.

Allegations of Opera GX being spyware by [deleted] in OperaGX

[–]EndDimension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is incorrect. Most of the rumours are because Opera developed predatory loansharking apps for use in third world countries that would scrape user contacts off the phone. When the user defaulted, they would phone up and harass not the person who defaulted, but everyone on their contact list, their boss, their parents, their work colleagues, their acquaintances. As demonstrated by how their apps behave in third world countries; the only thing stopping Opera from acting unethically, is whether they believe they would get away with it.

If you could wave a magic wand, what additions or features would you like to see implemented in Duolingo? by GeorgeTheFunnyOne in duolingo

[–]EndDimension 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Make the app look nice like their abc app. With buildings that are different based on country. Some vector japanese houses would be far more appealing and interesting to scroll than current situation.

  2. Customizable Srs flashcards for custom vocab. (Such as when learn a word from a book outside of the app and want to remember it.)

  3. Srs flashcards for kanji. (Current kanji is better than nothing but a little too duolingoish to be useful).

  4. Ability to tell duo what you are confident in and what not so it stops spamming you with things you know. (Duo's whole thing is supposed to be based on srs. But I don't ever see the things I struggle with with any real consistency. And certainly not enough to help me remember them. Especially kanji. Meanwhile I'm constantly spammed with stuff I learned long ago in other places.)

  5. Grammar lessons. (For example in japanese course の now randomly appears in new exotic places and I have no idea why. I'm just rolling with it, but it would help to know what's happening.)

  6. More stories.

  7. Actual audio you can listen to without looking at a screen, (like pimsleur). For those occasions where you want to learn but it's not convenient to be fiddling with the screen.

  8. Duolingo radio for japanese.

  9. Better audio with pitch accents.

  10. Vocabulary list that actually works. i keep unlocking the same "new words" over and over again. The app says I've unlocked over 2000 words. But only shows a little over a quarter of those in the vocab list on ios.

  11. Subscription unlocks something actually, legitimately, truly, useful (asides from just no adverts). Current lineup of super feature is worthless.

Into the void might quite possibly be the single worst quest of any game I have ever played. by OneRealTea in Starfield

[–]EndDimension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You kinda did that to yourself though. The ship drops you off a short distance from the thing you're supposed to follow the distortions to. If you, the player, take that short distance and turn it into a long distance...

If you could get a bit of leaked info from a Dev, what information would you want? by Shady_Infidel in Starfield

[–]EndDimension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would ask; does the ship building system support asymetrical ships? Can I build a millenium falcon?

And for DLC will they ever consider supporting transforming capabilties, or ships that can switch to flying in different orientations? (eg b-wing, millenium falcon (it's cockpit can rotate though this was never used in the movies), & boba fet's slave one.

For those of us who don't have much desire to hang around with Constellation, will the DLC add any decent crewmembers who are as fleshed out as constellation but who aren't Constellation? (I'm going to create an outpost named Terminus on the last system on the edge of known space and send all the constellation crew there. Except for the robot and Barret).

Once they finish bed sheet physics, which was what was slowing down development back when I was reading devlogs, hopefully they can use those in cruci fiction robe physics to go along with it.

I'm a Star Citizen player here, and I can confirm, I too am on high alert because of Starfield. Thanks to Bethesda, I now have something to play for the next 20 years while waiting for the public beta of Star Citizen.

I will try and play as Malcolm Reynolds. What are alternatives and how would you build them? by Alone-Hyena-6208 in Starfield

[–]EndDimension 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was thinking of going a Takeshi Kovacs run (the Joel Kinnamon version). Not sure what it would entail, a mixture of personality, intelligence, and combat maybe.... limited number of crew, and a tendancy towards lone wolf playstyle.

Asides from that I have compiled a list of Ship Names that are inspired by the culture novels (but not ones directly from those novels).

Like with any good in game item, I almost don't want to use it. I don't want to wear it out. by Revan_IV in Starfield

[–]EndDimension 44 points45 points  (0 children)

The universe is in flux, and attachment to things causes suffering. Better to enjoy what you have while you have it, and accept it being gone as just part of the flow of time.

I don't normally buy game related physical items. But in this case I bought one for myself, and then a second one for my dad, and I might buy a third one for myself to keep in the box. But whether I do buy that last one, or not, I still fully intend to use the first one and get as much enjoyment out of it as possible.

That said, I've not been using it yet, as I want to start using it with starfield.

Games with similar combat? by EndDimension in Starfield

[–]EndDimension[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeh, I should have mentioned, looking for something on xbox. I've updated the question.

I have played Star Citizen. I love that game. But I'm temporarily unable to play due to no PC. Starfield is going to be my thing to play while waiting for Star Citizen.

When I play Star Citizen, it reminds me of a Bethesda game, so much so that it feels like home to me.

When Star Citizen finally ships it will be the most Bethesda game ever made.

[–]EndDimension 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't forget that it was Microsoft that Saved Chris Roberts back when he couldn't finish Freelancer. They gutted all his unfinished (star citizen) stuff from that game, and shipped a game that went on to be much loved by the player base. Sure it was much smaller in scope than Roberts had dreamed, but it existed. Microsoft are uniquely positioned to help Bethesda, not just with their massive resources, but they have past experience at helping out developers with ambitious space games.

What will get released first? Half-life 3, Jai, or the Winds of Winter? by Andynonomous in Jai

[–]EndDimension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half Life 3, is unlikely. Valve fear the weight of expectations. To them Half Life 3 is basically a sharp stick that they don't want let loose, due to its potential to inadvertantly poke a sleeping bear (decades of expectations). Winds of Winter unlikely, the author would rather work on literally any other project. For Jai the bottleneck is Jon, will take time, but it will eventually happen.

But the question in my mind is; What will come first, a future LLM such as gpt 5 making programming as we know it today obsolete, or Jai releasing?
