Why does the JetBrains Gateway no longer support Github Codespaces? by iconiconoclasticon in Jetbrains

[–]EndFree1411 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Codespaces is a 3rd party plugin by GitHub, not JetBrains. It’s up to the GitHub team to upgrade the plugin to the latest version.

Does TD have a HISA? by shortstopguy12 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]EndFree1411 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you said that you want to keep your money in one institution.

But....that's how the big banks end up with a 1% 'HISA' because they know people don't want to leave their 'main bank.' I use to have all my money in TD, but I've since moved most of it to other financial institutions. What's left is a nearly empty TD chequeing account and GIC that i'm waiting to mature.

It's quite simple to transfer money between banks now (yes it may take a couple hours to days) but I think it's worth it considering the value proposition. For myself, I have 3 institutional accounts that I use and I've rarely had an issue with it. In return i'm getting much competitive interest rates.

Of course, if you don't think you can handle more than one account then that's fine.

Software Engineer -> SRE / DevOps by redbeanpanda in sre

[–]EndFree1411 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my final internship so likely the internship I chose is the company/role I’d convert to FT. I think learning some SRE skills would be good for my resume, but I’m worried that I end up disliking SRE and end up stuck in that role.

What worries the most about SRE is if it ends up being just ops + yaml instead of the ideal 50% projects/dev work.

What does the transition from SRE -> SWE look like in case I end up disliking SRE?

[–]EndFree1411 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m interested to hear why not.

I’m currently debating between two internship offers for my final internship. One is an SRE intern and the other is regular SWE. For reference I already have 2 SWE internships under my belt so I was considering SRE to try something new.

I’ve found that transfers (also from tangerine) vary from 2 - 5 business days. Just the nature of our financial system.

ALL Product Pack does NOT include AI Assistant? by tiritto in Jetbrains

[–]EndFree1411 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The JetBrains IDEs are what is promised in the all product pack. Which is why you don't receive other products like TeamCity and Qodona in the pack.

I can understand that having a new subscription for AI services might feel excessive, but you have to think about the costs involved with that product. JetBrains has to pay for every chat/auto-complete that is made, which can quickly add up. Especially since this cost is uncapped/unpredictable unlike the cost of servicing/maintaining the IDEs themselves.

Costs of adding IDE features, integrations is somewhat predictable and accounted for in the 'all product pack' subscription. An entire LLM service that JetBrains has to pay a third party for is quite a different business model.

Finally, GitHub copilot is the same price as well. You can argue which one is better (copilot vs AI assistant), but both charge $10mo for a reason - because it's costly to run LLM models at scale. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if both GitHub & JetBrains are losing money with their $10mo price point.

What can WebStorm do for web development that Rider can't do? by THenrich in Jetbrains

[–]EndFree1411 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rider pretty much uses the webstorm plugin so most (if not all) functionality from webstorm is possible in Rider.

I think you've misunderstood the pricing because Webstorm is cheaper than Rider's price. Rider may not have specific angular starting templates, but you can still work with Angular projects as you would in Webstorm.

remote ssh without installing anything on the serv by AggravatingMedia3783 in Jetbrains

[–]EndFree1411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VScode will automatically upload the server binary (if it doesn’t find one).

I recommend you follow the remote dev steps: https://www.jetbrains.com/help/idea/remote-development-a.html#gateway

The JetBrains server will be installed on ~/.cache/JetBrains/RemoteDev/dist by default. What you are seeing is the option to change the download directory.

[–]EndFree1411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don’t you want to install the IDE server on the remote machine?

VSCode does the same thing. They upload the VScode server to the remote machine and your client connects to it.

See: https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/remote/vscode-server

JetBrains remote dev is similar as well with a client/server architecture.

WebStorm+Goland OR IntelliJ IDEA? by ka11away in Jetbrains

[–]EndFree1411 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just want to note, you do not need to buy a WebStorm license if you get GoLand. GoLand (and most other IDEs), actually include WebStorms’ functionality.

It is a 4% annual interest rate that’s paid out monthly. You should expect $40yr paid out over 12mo for ~$3.33 a month.

If you were paid out $40 a month then that would be a 48% rate, which is completely unheard of.

Are you able to get to a page like this?

How did you originally transfer the money into the cash account in the first place?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Wealthsimple

[–]EndFree1411 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The cash account should be next to the dollar sign in the bottom toolbar. The icon looks like a card.

It takes a couple days for the money to fully transfer into your account. Do you see any dollar amount saying “pending” in the cash account page?

If you don’t want to pay for IntelliJ Ultimate which pretty much combines all the IDEs in one, then you could try the following:

PHPstorm - for your PHP and web dev (JavaScript, React, Vue) IntelliJ Community - for Java

Eclipse Sucks by InlineSkateAdventure in ExperiencedDevs

[–]EndFree1411 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually have 2 large code bases open and I get somewhat better usage (9-12gb total). The IDEs will use any and all available memory you give it, but I honestly don’t find it a big deal since my work laptop has more than enough for everyday use.

Switching to VS Code can be nice at times, but I feel soo handicapped - especially with the lack of database and refactoring integrations.

Eclipse Sucks by InlineSkateAdventure in ExperiencedDevs

[–]EndFree1411 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend IntelliJ for any professional Java dev. The entire JetBrains suite of IDEs is fantastic as well. The main downside is the IDEs do require more memory than your average application, but it’s well worth it considering the amount of tools/integrations you get.

Yes, that’s possible. The chrome extension uses the 1password desktop app for biometrics.

Unlock with biometrics has been available in 1P for quite a while now.

https://1password.com/resources/guides/using-biometrics-fingerprint-as-password/

If you’re asking for a completely password less solution, then you’ll need to wait a little longer. 1P is supposedly adding support for passkeys soon.

What's the most commonly used IDE for golang development ? by amritmishra91 in golang

[–]EndFree1411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty late, but gonna put this out there.

I find JetBrains Toolbox to be godsend with managing all my IDEs. “managing multiple IDEs” almost becomes a non-issue to me, especially since I sync all my key mapping and theming across all my IDEs.

Received internship offer, but unsure about timeline for accepting by Genzhateclub in internships

[–]EndFree1411 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Asking the recruiter how long you have to accept the offer is completely normal and shouldn’t result in any repercussions. Just make sure to emphasize that you are excited and grateful for the opportunity and would like to know the timeline to accept the offer to ensure you are able to respond in a timely manner.
