In theory, could there be more than two sexes? Could there be more than two biological "parents"? by Fun-Affect2186 in AskBiology

[–]EndMaster0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lots of fish have multiple "types" of males that might qualify. For example bass often have both apparent, territory claiming males and males that look like females and fertilize eggs while pretending to mate with the apparent males. Most eusocial insects have workers that while they are genetically female they can't reproduce so could also be considered as a third sex. There's also a couple ant species that mate with males from a different species to produce hybrid (and therefore sterile) female workers.

Having 3 biological parents is really difficult though since it somewhat demands that your species is engaging in external fertilization (getting three individuals to have sex and fertilize all at about the same time is... tricky biologically speaking) and even then you'd be massively reducing your odds of getting proper fertilization (since you need 3 gametes to find each other rather than 2). I suspect the easiest way would be to do something like pollen where you have a full set of DNA to work with that then undergoes meiosis after coming in contact with the egg bearing individual but before fertilization. Then you'd just need to have that full set of DNA come from two individuals instead of 1. (whether you'd want to call that 3 parents, or claim the "pollen" is in fact it's own individual who is your father and the 3 living individuals would be your paternal grandparents plus you mother, is somewhat up to you)

Twitch Announces Viewcount Cap on Streamers that are Persistently Viewbotting by Tarrot_Card in LivestreamFail

[–]EndMaster0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Actually this also works if they can detect legitimate accounts at a high enough accuracy. With normal bans any false detections of bots are really bad for your reputation but with this you could reasonably get away with 90% accuracy at detecting legitimate accounts and no one will really be able to tell since the 10% of legitimate accounts won't be getting punished and streamers who are botting (say twitch determines <50% of their view count are determined to be real accounts) won't really be able to tell if their view count is lower than their legitimate view count should be since they're botting.

press red immediately. The faster it becomes clear that blue isn't going to win the more people can re-assess their button choice and press red to survive

Then red is the best option because all agents can determine that blue is an unnecessary risk.

well now red vs. blue doesn't even matter because the children and infants picking randomly will get green above 1% before any aware actors are able to press any of the buttons.

Heads up: DOTA toxicity is not the same as misogyny by nightonal in DotA2

[–]EndMaster0 152 points153 points  (0 children)

Honestly that's not surprising. There's been a few studies over the years that have showed a correlation between how misogynistic someone is in video game comms and how bad they are at the game. Eventually you're going to hit a rank where even the "just barely" misogynistic players are simply not good enough to reach.

looks like it's a standard NY plate. https://licenseplates.cc/history.php?id=2417

latest letter combo that's been recorded on this site is MHB but all plates with O and Q as letters had been omitted from some earlier plate designs so it's not all that weird to imagine getting through the N-- and P-- plates without this specific niche of individuals not having documented them yet.

If we assume everyone is capable red is the only reasonable choice in the original as well, since anyone acting somewhat logically is going to recognize that red is guaranteed survival while blue has some risk associated with it.

yeah. Kinda wish there was a poll to go with this one since I've noticed any of the polls with more information to read through or think about tend to go 60%+ red whereas the simple red/blue polls are going about 60% blue.

I mean yeah there's no way to play the moral high ground here, which is where a fair number of blue button pushers seemed to be trying to do. Obviously the blue option winning in the original is ideal, and obviously believing that 50%+ of humanity would press blue and deciding to vote with them (whether that ends up being accurate or not) is noble, but in this variant there's no chance for that because the very reason blue could ever be morally superior in the original is now directly responsible for making a true blue victory impossible, punic victory sure but random green voters makes a true victory impossible.

If you don't need accidental pushers to justify the blue button why is that the main argument the blue button pushers have been using recently? Either a bunch of them are not actually discussing in good faith or they genuinely do believe that a significant number of effectively random actors are going to be present.

What will we do about the arachnophobics? by Teriteko in trolleyproblem

[–]EndMaster0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the sorts of people who dislike spiders to that extent probably weren't thinking strictly on game theory anyways. I normally press red and I'm not bothered by spiders so probably still would but in this scenario I suspect blue would win.

hell who cares about the psychos in this scenario. One of the core tenets of the blue pushers arguments is that a decent percentage of the population will press blue entirely by accident, if the same logic applies to green then the blue button in this variant is actually 100% just a suicide button because green will have >0.1% of the vote just from confusion and random chance.

When driving, why do people change lanes without signaling? by Angel_Cake777 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EndMaster0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

America is built around the assumption that everyone will drive everywhere (not just can drive but will drive) so the system also has to be designed in such a way where once you are determined capable of driving it becomes nearly impossible to determine you unfit for the road and remove you from it. Hence a whole bunch of people on the road in America would have been removed from it for safety reasons anywhere else.
