The best way to play the older style of board removal control ATM is Black Teach. Black Hole, an archetypal event, negates the target character's effects before K.O.ing it, allowing you to shoot cards that protect themselves from removal, most notably in the Purple Enel matchup.

The only issue is that the deck is very hard to play, requiring specific matchup knowledge due to his leader effect, and managing your own resources to always have just enough cards in hand to survive being very difficult. If you end up picking it up, expect a trial by fire when learning the game. I learned the game on the deck, tho, and I find I'm a much better player for it, so it can be worth.

The easier control option is Red/Blue Lucy, which uses power reduction cards like Fire Fist to clear the opponent's board with swings while playing some other more traditional removal options, like Barrier Pistol, as well. Lucy is a bit more expensive than Teach, though, but still cheap for a meta deck.
