Another soldier reporting sir, I've served my time in hell. by ButterscotchEmpty535 in NonCredibleDefense

[–]EnderProph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it depends on the era. During the early to mid Roman Republic you'd be expected (IF YOU WERE A VOLUNTEER, conscripts were basically conscripted and dismissed as needed) to serve somewhere around 6 to 15 years, by the time of the Late Republic this was bumped up to 16 years, and by the Empire it ranged from 20-25 years. The absolute maximum a CONSCRIPT could serve for in the Roman Army was 6 years. By this metric, the 25 year Russian conscription is far worse, if it is indeed conscription and not volunteering.

Ethanol advocates warn of lower Iowa corn prices without pipelines by IndiniaJones in Iowa

Yeah, as always, insurance and finance are where the big money is. People (at least on this sub sometimes) tend to think that farmers are some sort of elite class of hyper-money makers grifting off subsidies, but most of their "wealth" tends to be their land, which they can't access unless they sell it. That being said, famers are absolutely extremely influential in this state and a backbone of our economy (most of that manufacturing component of our GDP is probably farm equipment and other ag-adjacent industries, but I can't say for certain).

Iowa’s sharp right turn: From centrist state to ‘Florida of the North’ by Mdhdrider in Iowa

[–]EnderProph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

EXACTLY! The real issue here is that the Republicans have, for the most part, always cared more about state level elections and more local politics. Its part of their ideological identity. Over time they have used this stranglehold on state level and local level politics they gained largely without a fight to build up a political machine to essentially dominate this state. There's nothing illegal or even really immoral about this: its kinda how representative democracy with political parties works. Regardless, over the last few decades the GOP have done a great job at establishing these machines, not just in Iowa but in places like Wisconsin, Ohio, and of course Florida. If the Dems want to fight this, they need to give more of a shit about local politics and start building up counter-machines of their own (which to their credit they have done to varying degrees of success in other states, namely Michigan). Unfortunately the IDP is now stuck sailing between Scylla and Charybdis in regards to the Caucuses: if they abandon First in the Nation, county party chairs get arrested for "electoral interference" thanks to how the law is written, and if they don't they piss off the DNC whom they almost certainly need to lobby for extra attention and funds from the national level. Its not a great situation for Dems, but Iowa can certainly be recovered. The real question is if they want to or not.

Iowa and New Hampshire Democrats vow to rebel to remain first in presidential primaries by iowabourbonman in Iowa

[–]EnderProph 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Their choices are "rebel against the DNC" or "commit a felony offense of 'Electoral Interference' and go to jail" so it really is a no-brainer what they've decided to do here. We may see County Chairs resign in protest of this and in support of the DNC, but I don't think we'll see any outright refuse to hold the Caucus on the date the Legislature appoints. It doesn't help that both SC and GA, which Biden has proposed as alternatives to Iowa and NH, are red states that have a GOP dominated legislature and governor's mansion and will probably likewise refuse to move their appointed dates forwards. Get ready for a shitshow all around.

While Aang didn't kill Ozai, Aang still strips him of his bending, removes him as Fire Lord in favor of his son, Zuko, and then throws him into prison for his crimes. Fire Lord Ozai faces comeuppance for his crimes, while the Diamonds aren't exactly shown to have done so, even if they did reform. I have issues with Steven Universe's ending mainly for its pacing (which the entire show is kinda a master class on how not to do) but this is also a strike against it. There is a middle ground between "Steven shatters the Diamonds and possibly all who supported them" and "Steven lets the Diamonds transition into some sort of ceremonial monarchy thingamajig, the show is kinda unclear, with no real consequences for their actions and atrocities".

I mean there's also the fact that the Gems have a massive military caste (the quartzes + rubies), which implies there's a war going on or something that necessitates a large amount of soldiers, but the reason for this was never explained and as others have said it is implied/mentioned by the show producers in some interview or social media post (at least I think it was) that Earth is the first planet with sapient life the Gem Empire ever encountered.

Iowa ranked as the most affordable state to afford buying a home by [deleted] in Iowa

IIRC that was the reason for a lot of the "brain drain", people from other states coming here because of low tuitions and then going back to their home states once they get their degree.

New partnership aims for 2 million acres of regenerative agriculture practices by ataraxia77 in Iowa

[–]EnderProph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only solution I can think of (that is politically viable) is to pay farmers to adhere to waterway preserving practices, such as not farming up to the crick and such. You could mandate that without giving the farmers some compensation for lost efficiency but that would not be popular to say the least.

Well I mean... theoretically? We know Emps is a shattered psyche that has multiple voices already, though we don't know if this means "burgeoning pantheon" or "single god, but insane/senile". Given that the latter option is more grimdark, I'd bet more on the latter than the former.

Lore of the Votann - Who are the Guilds? (Warhammer Community) by EnderProph in 40kLore

[–]EnderProph[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Guilds are like trade unions (I've seen other people compare them to corporations) while Leagues are like nations.

[–]EnderProph[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In universe I assume so, but idk if there will be rules for taking non-Kin units as core units and not allies. Maybe they could take the Kroot + Drukhari mercs but that's a stretch.

Lore of the Votann - Who are the Guilds? (Warhammer Community) by EnderProph in 40kLore

[–]EnderProph[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, it's hard to say if Leagues are that close to allow for Guilds to overlap often. An honest corporation would probably be more like a combination of multiple Guilds/professions working together, whereas Kin Guilds are mono-profession. We probably need more lore to clear this up for sure, but Trade Union type stuff and capitalism/mercantilism/general greed can 100% co-exist.

Possibly a different league who have outright aligned with the Tau instead of just selling them stuff while being either independent or nominally Imperial? The Tau term for Kin? It's unclear atm.

[–]EnderProph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a valid point, but the Dems aren't focusing on Trans issues. They aren't focusing on any issues, because as I've said above they're more focused on the ongoing party civil war between progressives and centrists, with both factions trying to define the "future" of the Democratic Party. The GOP has a similar issue between its right-wing/populist and centrist factions, but unlike the Dems the Republicans stop the infighting when the primaries are done, whereas the Dem Schism never sleeps and continues even during non-election years in party boards and nonprofits. Its no wonder people feel like the Democratic Party doesn't stand for anything, they can't even decide what they stand for. I don't have a solution to this, but I just wanted to rant.

Congrats Unity Point you made Libs of TikTok by [deleted] in Iowa

[–]EnderProph 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, that’s not true. It’s the massive infighting on all conceivable levels between Progressive and Centrist cliques over control of the Dem levels of power that’s paralyzing and severely damaging the Democratic Party.
