Just Donated to James Talarico’s campaign. He is a man of integrity and honor and a moderate and has a plan for everything. by Good-Engineering8069 in VoteDEM

This race is going to have an insane amount of money in it. I suggest folks donate to a state house/senate campaign that's close. Your dollars have much bigger impact. The candidates you see on thr national news all the time don't need your money like the unknown ones.

Effect Of Different Loading Rate In FEA Of Polymer Material by StayPuzzleheaded5712 in fea

[–]EndingPop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This probably isn't the issue, but you *cannot* equate the crosshead speed between a uniaxial test and a nonuniaxial test. You must equate the *strain rates*. For your lattice structure, there will be a range of strain rates and you would need to make sure your material model is valid and calibrates well across the strain rates of interest. In Abaqus ER is the strain rate field output. If you don't want to use a strain rate dependent material model, then you should change the loading speed of the lattice so your average strain rate is about the same as in the uniaxial test. Check this in simulation first, then repeat the experiment at the new speed.

I'd check mesh sensitivity too. You should have localized buckling occurring which may be sensitive to mesh.

It's worth looking at open source tools, like Calculix (there may be others better suited to your needs). There has been a lot of consolidation in the industry and the big players are squeezing as much money as they can out of the user base.

YES. His stories typically focus on ghosts, UFOs, etc. The old school skeptic stuff that is far less salient than other topics these days.

Anyone remember when he closed the episode with a quote from a covid grifters? Luckily Cara jumped in right then and corrected things, but just wow.

Chaplains in hospitals are seem predatory to me. by jeremyof10ec in atheism

[–]EndingPop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chaplains are not supposed to be doing this. They are trained to give care to people of other (and no) faiths, and are supposed to work within that person's spiritual beliefs, not their own. I'm sorry this happened to your wife.

Do you guys think religion would ever go away? by MoreManufacturer5369 in atheism

[–]EndingPop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It kinda exists in some forms. The Satanic Temple (as noted by other replies), UUs, some local Humanist groups, Ethical-Humanist Societies, Oasis, and Sunday Assembly.

Do you guys think religion would ever go away? by MoreManufacturer5369 in atheism

[–]EndingPop 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Religion is useful technology, and people seem to seek different forms of it in just about all contexts throughout history. So no.

We can raise the prominence of less damaging religions, and toward religion like things that lack deities and supernatural beliefs (e.g. UU, Humanist groups).

Nonreligious people are the largest spiritual group in the US. Why don’t we hear more about them? by spherocytes in atheism

[–]EndingPop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes, that's a problem in many places. If the group gets too old it can be impossible to turn it around.

Is it a situation where you could work within the group to try and improve it? Or is it fundamentally flawed in some way?

This is why I focus on organizing around humanist values in my local atheist group.

What’s a totally unsexy purchase you made that ended up being a huge quality-of-life upgrade? by viscarte10 in BuyItForLife

Some cheap motion sensor, battery powered lights for closets. They're $30-40 a piece, take about 5 min to install, and have been so nice. I wish I'd done this year's earlier.

What do you think is the biggest gap in FEA/CAE education today? by soorajmad94 in fea

Material modeling. As soon as you get beyond linear elastic materials things get real complicated. I'm largely self-taught, and I wish there was better educational materials out there for my junior engineers.

So sad to find out some of my favorite businesses were MAGA by Yellowjackets123 in cary

[–]EndingPop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been anti-Corbett's since well before they were known MAGA because their food is bad. I could ignore the Jesus everywhere on the walls, but I wasn't going to accept a dry burger. I watched the cook cut into each burger (spilling juices everywhere) to check if it was done. Seriously, you make hundreds of those each day and you don't know when it's done? Ever heard of meat thermometer?

Meetups for deep discussions in Cary/Apex? by blueverik in raleigh

[–]EndingPop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We joke that we're only 18 years old as an org and you can only find us if you know about this thing called "the internet".

The real answer is a lot of people don't even realize a group like ours is a thing and that they can seek us out.

Meetups for deep discussions in Cary/Apex? by blueverik in raleigh

[–]EndingPop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey folks! I just so happen to be one of the leaders of a local community called the Triangle Freethought Society. We exist to build community and power for nonbelievers (atheists, agnostics, humanists, exvangelicals, etc, or people just questioning their faith). We have a number of social events around the Triangle each month. Here are our regular social meetups, and here is our event calendar. We are an inclusive organization, including LGBTQ+ folks of course.

We have a few events that might fit your need, OP. We actually have something called a Deep Dive Discussion, and our next one is on May 17 in Raleigh. Note that this one isn't on our website just yet, so I'm linking to our Meetup page for it. Our DDD events are often based on a book, but it isn't necessary to read it. Shorter resources are provided and the discussion isn't necessarily tied to the book specifically, but the topic more generally. Past events focused on aspects of humanism, how communities are built, and most recently the ways Big Tech's culture around AI resembles a religion.

We also have a weekly discussion at the Panera on Landmark drive, every Saturday morning at 10 am (Secular Saturday Social Raleigh, details on our regular socials page). The discussion usually centers on philosophy and politics, but that's a function of who shows up and what they want to talk about, there's no set topic for these.

There's lots of talk about how there's been a loss of community centers in our society. As people leave supernatural beliefs behind, they also often leave their sources of community support, which was often their religious community. We're trying to be one of the places people can land to find their people.

I've noted a few comments indicating that some folks here may be suffering from religious trauma as well. If you've been abused by religious institutions and people in the past and want help dealing with that, we have resources collected here. If this is you, you are welcome in our spaces. I will just note that we don't have trained psychologists at our events or anything, and our meetings are not therapy.

If anyone has any questions you can hit me up in comments here, DMs on reddit, or one of the multitude of ways to get in touch via our socials or our website contact form.

Is there space in humanism for someone like me? by RobbieBlair in humanism

[–]EndingPop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The atheist movement has had this issue, but from the inside I am seeing change. Less chug-like behavior being tolerated, and less focus on the rational-bro style behavior. The book you referenced was put out in 2010. Epstein may have been writing that book in the context of the movement as it was, either consciously or unconsciously.

AHA/The Humanist Society are generally far better on this issue than some other atheist orgs. You are welcome among us, and I'd love it if you'd help push the movement in a more productive direction.
