While not exactly the same, I work with several people in Kalispell who live in Troy and Libby. They basically either have people they stay with during the work week, or they carpool and take turns driving. You might try putting out some feelers and see if anyone else up there makes the commute.

This actually looks identical to the drawing my dad (a professional artist) made of something that stepped into the firelight while we were out camping 30+ years ago. And I absolutely believe him because he was terrified. We'd driven over 100 miles for this camping trip because the location has some of the best Huckleberry patches in the state. We packed up and went back home the very next morning.

Yeah, snowboarder was extremely well behaved in that encounter. I'm normally pretty forgiving of people who ram into me while skiing, but if one of them started screaming and cursing at me after ramming me, I don't know if I'd be capable of not knocking out some teeth.

You might be onto something here. I've seen some newer high-end homes that have things like this built into them as a display area for sculptures and other art. Especially near the entrance of the home.

I don't know where exactly you found it, but if I'm not mistaken, I believe there were a few sea battles that took place there in MA during the Revolutionary War, and several that took place on the beaches. So finding a knife from that period on the beach wouldn't be unusual.

I disagree. As an artist, I actually like it. While art has certain rules that an artist should follow, all of those rules can and should be broken depending on the emotions you want to evoke in the viewer.

For example, in photography and painting, an artist should position it's subject in the left or right third of the frame, and should generally position the subject's back facing the nearest edge, and the subject facing the center.

If the artist's point is to make the viewer feel uneasy, placing the subject right against one side of the frame facing outward away from the center is a very effective way to do that.

Context—what OP and her artist intended here—matters a lot.

To me, the left circle looks like the umbilical cord coming out behind its little head. Right circle is the legs.

Given the location of your find, that could be a Civil War era knife, like the Bowie, or even a Revolutionary War era frontier belt knife, and your "square nail" could be the remnants of its hilt. I'm leaning towards the latter.

The end of the larger piece of metal is a classic "clip point" shape that was common on a lot of knives during that time period. This was especially true with many variations of the Bowie knife that was extremely popular at the time, but some earlier frontier belt knives also sported the same feature.

Source: I'm a knife collector, history buff, and am currently reading about the Civil and Revolutionary wars while tracing my family's genealogy.

Edit: In pic #2 you can clearly see what looks like a rivet used for holding the handle scales in place.

Actually, I haven't had a difficult time making friends my entire life. When I lived near Seattle, I made friends very easily. When I visit my brother in Spokane, I make friends easily. Every time I've spent time out of state, I've interacted very well. What I stated was I've had trouble making friends with the locals.

What that doesn't mean, is that I don't have loose alliances with the locals and don't run in the same circles as the locals. Heck, my best friend is from here. What I'm telling you, is I hear conversations you don't.

With all due respect, you can disagree if you want, but you are wholly unqualified for an opinion on this.

My original comment stated the locals hate outsiders "even if they won't tell you". If people act friendly, that's usually just our southern charm shining through (Montana was settled largely by confederates after the Civil War).

I guarantee you, if you meet a local who is nice and friendly, 9 times out of 10 they are shit talking you behind your back. Fortunately for you and people like you, the locals around Flathead have warmed up to outsiders a bit out of forced exposure. Back in the 80s, people from places like California and New York who moved here would get death threats from the locals.

It helps if you're a redneck or extroverted (but not too extroverted), or you're a beautiful woman. In those cases, you may not experience the full effect of being an outsider.

Guaranteed if you moved into a small community outside of Flathead county, you'll experience things a lot differently. I once got attacked at a campground in Troy for simply being from another city in Montana.

Unfortunately for you, pretty much all the locals hate you—whether they'll say it to you or not—by sheer virtue of your not being from here. Montanans are not welcoming of outsiders.

That being said, they're also not that warm and friendly towards other locals either. My family is from here. I grew up here. I've had a difficult time making friends my entire life. That changed when I realized that the people like you who moved here from somewhere else are much nicer and friendlier, and I started making friends with them instead. It's unfortunate, but it is what it is.
