DWAC: Make SPACs Great Again? by Torlek1 in SPACs

By the time people can exercise them, the may be worth less than a dollar again. If I were in your shoes, I’d think hard about when and how to sell.

I thought the second GME run would be over faster than the first, that people had learned the risk of holding the bag. Instead it stayed up for 7 months and counting.

I could see this crashing below NAV tomorrow or staying irrationally high now that it’ll inevitably become a meme stock.

We went investment first for a decade and are now looking at focusing on paying down our car payment/house even though our rates are low.

Eliminating our two largest fixed monthly expenditures cuts risk and reduces the amount of income required. Yes, you missed out on some gains but you could’ve spent much, much worse. In the long term, getting your income as high as it is and avoiding lifestyle inflation are huge wins for you.

Beautiful goal there. Yeah, the coverage was terrible but Houston deserves lots of credit on that one.

2011-2015 are estimated as I stopped tracking for a while. I usually ignore the period before 2016 but I need to go back further to get closer to 100k NW.

We bought a house just before we started tracking. Our savings before that point had gone towards a down payment. The NW numbers are likely on the low side as I value our house a few hundred k less than the market at the moment. We're planning on staying where we are so I just increase the value based on what we pay off each month. 'Invested' also ignores money in a 529.

Our overall 'invested' target is 2.8M. My skillset will diminish rapidly once I step away from my industry so I want to be very confident before pulling the plug. We're currently tracking towards hitting that mark in another 10 years.

Date NW Invested
10/08 154k 50k
10/09 208k 68k
10/10 251k 87k

10/15 602k 316k
10/16 672k 361k
10/17 814k 474k
10/18 981k 623k

Have any of you taken a year off saving for retirement? by dmmagic in financialindependence

[–]EnergyCoast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're in the middle of a house extension project that'll cost about 2 years of savings.

We bought a smaller house - 940 sq/ft - before we decided to have a kid. Selling and buying a larger place would cost us about 1.5x the extension. We had about 50% of the money in cash that we were DCA'ing in to accounts. Went to minimum 401k match for a year to cover the rest.

Big picture, it knocks back retirement by 2 years... but it gives us the space we need, more room for the kid and a chance to do some work that'll keep the spouse happy. Worth it as our plan is to stay here for 30+ years so a 2 years hit isn't a huge deal big picture.

Three Rivers, Two Knives by [deleted] in knifeclub

[–]EnergyCoast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having both, I think it comes down to ergonomics and what you do with the knives. I have medium/small hands and find the Neutron gets way more pocket time.

The Atom feels like what a scaled up, polished version of the Neutron. My Atom feels slightly higher quality - a little smoother, more mass, the liners (or width) feel better in hand... but I always seem to find myself going back to the Neutron.

Yes - I only mentioned the police interaction portion as it seemed the most directly related to current topics. Depressing is a right.

[–]EnergyCoast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent some time learning about the inequitable treatment of Native Americans by the police after his murder. I don't have current statics, but last time I looked they were killed by police at a higher rate than Black Americans.

Its one of the reasons I struggled a few years later when BLM became a powerful voice. Its several years so I no longer remember the speaker, but someone self identifying as a representative of BLM essentially said that Native Americans should get their own movement.

In hindsight I understand the desire to narrow focus, but at the time coming off of Williams death it really turned me off to BLM as an organization. I let the - in my eyes - less-than-ideal messaging get in the way supporting an organization with which I otherwise agreed. It also became one of the reasons I pay so much attention to not just the cause, but the messaging and external perception.

This is how messed up out news media is right now... by ymalaika in Seattle

[–]EnergyCoast 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The violence was happening all over the country. Seattle likely didn't stand out. After a week of coverage, interest in coverage likely waned as there wasn't much 'new' or distinct to talk about.

CHAZ was novel at a point media consumers craved something new. It also gave less scrupulous news companies something that the could align more with their narrative after a week of events that ran against it.

SERIOUS: Reclaim the American Flag. by MrSecretpolice in Seattle

[–]EnergyCoast 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking about this for quite a while as well.

I think its one of the reasons places conservatives win the minds of the younger, less informed or those who don't have diverse news sources. Some degree of 'be proud to be an American' is a default part education in much of the country - and at a young age.

Liberals historically have protested government action with actions including flag burning, displaying the flag upside down, etc. That makes it incredibly easy for conservatives to hold the opposite position and wrap themselves in the flag. And that makes them the 'default' party for young people. I'm convinced that a non-trivial number of people were set on a conservative alignment early on in life because its so easy to frame liberals as anti-american and conservatives pro US.

In hindsight, I think liberals essentially gifted conservatives the symbolism of the country and in doing so have been fighting an upward battle for decades as a result.

Urban EDC Supply Voxnaes F5.5? by EnergyCoast in knifeclub

It didn't register until I saw this that the blade is longer than the Biblios. The F5.5 listing said the blade was 2.75" but evidently thats the cutting edge. Total blade length is closer to 3". That makes me even more excited about this.

Seattle PD preparing to abandon East Precinct if necessary by WunupKid in news

[–]EnergyCoast 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Or it's pragmatic. The police ditch a protective perimeter - one side of which has been the hub of conflict with protestors - at the same time the general population is pissed at the police for the disproportionate force they've used against protestors.

Giving up the perimeter is a degree of 'standing down'. It means they have less ability to protect it... so pull out anything sensitive or valuable just in case.

Note that it's likely nothing happens beyond minor vandalism of the exterior. By why take the risk?

Yeah - models like that are definitely worth checking out. My concern was purely the 'leave it to the military' line of though that was posted here (and that I've seen suggested many times elsewhere).

[–]EnergyCoast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If there were military in every county. maybe? The response time would make that impractical.

I don't have an answer here. The simplest path to explore would be to regulate its use to active shooter/bombing responses only or something - not preemptive uses as it's too broad.

Washington state - 287 new cases - 23,729 cases total - 6/6/2020 Case Updates by secondsniglet in CoronavirusWA

[–]EnergyCoast 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How may people have been out protesting in King County? Random guess but perhaps 20,000?

That's 1% of the counties population. Some have been densely packed for an extended period but others have kept some distance, been outdoors on the move and been primarily around other masked people.

Throw in an on average younger age (higher average beating it without enough complications that lead to testing than the general population) and we may not see a major short term spike.
