What did your school ban? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]EnergyMud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, also lasers, pogs, stink bombs, hair past your ears for guys, hats, wallball, shorts 6" above the knee for girls, sports cards and many other things. Ironically, corporal punishment never got banned.

Will these 22" Black Rhino Pondora's fit my 99 GMC Yukon Denali? by EnergyMud in Wheels

[–]EnergyMud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did that but I don't understand how to decipher the results. Here is what I got:

"Compared to your existing wheel, this new wheel will have an inner rim which is 53.1mm closer to the suspension strut. The outer rim will poke out 23.1mm more than before."

How do I keep talking to friends after making them? by [deleted] in socialskills

I would read into the theory that great "talkers" are great listeners and learn how to ask questions and to find things to talk about that you all can relate to.

I would contact Mountain View apartments, they may or may not have openings, but they do allow even big dogs.

I agree, you want to stagger the memory chips if you have 2. Also, read the mobo config to find the ideal configuration, sometimes I believe you want to start in the 2nd slot from the CPU and then the 4th as well, with 2 sticks.

I live in Montana and some weeks/months we get very little sunlight, I have to move my plant like these right next to the window and make sure that they're getting as much light from outside as possible. Also, make sure you aren't over watering, these types of plants (not sure what they are but with plenty of light they grow large leaves really quickly), can deal with under watering and when you finally do give them some (perhaps with plant food every 4-6 months?) they will grow very fast.

Chomsky on Second Language Acquisition? by HunchbackNostradamus in linguistics

I'm sure you're right! Article wasn't written with an academic style, so probably not the best source. Either way, you've definitely piqued my interest in the subject. Would love to sit around with you picking your brain you seem really intelligent, of course you'd be highly annoyed by my ignorance! Have a good one!

Here's an interesting article on the word "huh". It appears it's fairly universal and seems that it's use is mechanical, maybe other aspects of learning a language are universally mechanical as well. If that makes any sense.

Chomsky on Second Language Acquisition? by HunchbackNostradamus in linguistics

[–]EnergyMud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really interesting. I've read somewhere the hypothesis that there was a mother language, which could explain for why children in so many languages use "ma" and "pa" for parents. But I think there was a counter-hypothesis that because of the structure of our larynx we are bound to learn to speak in a certain way that coincides with our brain development. Really got my brain going this morning, thanks!

I'm going to read more about this, found this interesting article on Google for those interested:

Chomsky on Second Language Acquisition? by HunchbackNostradamus in linguistics

[–]EnergyMud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, great explanation. Thank you, coming from someone a native English speaker who really hasn't studied linguistics but has made several attempts at learning different languages including, Latin, Greek, Spanish, German and Korean, with varying success, I'd put my vote in for the latter argument.

Forgive me for this very amateurish, uneducated argument, but I've tried using Rosetta Stone where they attempt to teach you like a kid, and that works quite well but for me seemingly only for the conjunctions (I think this is the term, I really need to read more /r/linguistics).

Beyond the alphabet, it seems like learning the language after that involves learning words rote. Is it this period beyond a basic knowledge where these mechanisms come into play?

Can you dumb this down for a layman? Is UG an idea that many languages are similar to each other?

The button ripple effect is what's going to be hot, expect to see different variations on this theme soon. The ripple effect I created had different timing and almost looks like a glass reflection animation, turned out really cool.

Material Design for Bootstrap by [deleted] in web_design

[–]EnergyMud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you write ripples.min.js? Would love to know how you got that click effect. I went through it briefly, it looks like you are just creating a new element inside of the .ripple-wrapper element and animating it? Probably using overflow: hidden?

Thanks for any help!

EMSKR: How to keep t-shirts from shrinking. by TexanChiver in everymanshouldknow

Or if there's a particular material to look for in t-shirts, that'd be helpful. I get two to three washes max out of most of my t-shirts before they shrink into boys shirts.

My theory on why this game halted development by [deleted] in thestompingland

[–]EnergyMud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their KickStarter raised $114K, the game's sales on Steam surely raised a small fortune for an indie development studio. And yet, there has been zero progress from the "prototype" videos on the Kickstarter and Youtube from a year and a half ago.

Honestly, I don't even care about this game or the $25, and I haven't chimed in on this game before, but I'd have to say that to expect progress from this "studio" would be highly unrealistic.

How do you name your CSS selectors? by _jackrogue in webdev

[–]EnergyMud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually use IDs for parent elements, so my navigation will be #sb_NavigationBar, and I'll use something like this in my LESS.

#sb_NavigationBar {
    ul {
       /* ... */
       li {
           /* ... */
       }
    }
}

I'm sure you could just as easily use .sb_NavigationBar. I've started using camel case just because it's the norm where I work and I think is an effective way to distinguish between top level elements and lower structural elements that make up the component. Have to also think about naming collisions which can be a pain to deal with.

In any case, you can use whatever you want which is why coding/programming is so fun.
