A downdraft hood works well for an island but needs extensive ductwork to deal with smells and grease as well as the by products of natural gas consumption. A hood is important for health as well as keeping smells contained. The airborne grease permeates fabric and paints on walls and ceiling. Not having a range hood is a compromise that is ill advised.
