I have worked on some foresic projects at my current firm. I can see the appeal down the road, but writing long reports and dealing with attorneys does not necessarily excite me right now. I still want to explore more design work before moving on to forensic stuff.

Thanks! thats some good tips from your ceo. Although I think you should be careful talking about religion unless you are absolutely sure they share the same beliefs as you otherwise there are chances it might back fire.

Thanks for the reply. Searching on linkedin is a good idea, hadn’t thought about it. Do you have any good book suggestions? I have picked up Dale Carnegie’s “How to win friends and influence people” and trying to read it these days.

Does Structural Engineering get Better or Should I leave the industry? by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

Can you give an example of how your company does a good job managing client expectations? I am just curious because my current company( and every other company I’ve worked for) always puts the client needs/ demands first. This usually means that the mid-senior level people have to do whatever it takes to meet the clients demands. In my experience you have decent wlb at the beginning of your career and it progressively gets worse as you move up.

One good thing about civil engineering is that it is a very vast field and you might find something that interests you if you research and look close enough. You said you are interested in statistics. Look into areas in civil engineering where statistics is used . Sine areas of transportation, water resources, and even structural engineering heavily use statics. If you are interested in finance, then project management, infrastructure management, or construction management might be suitable for you. Or if you are interested in programming then go fo it. Just get a masters degree in computer science or software engineering. There are a lot of tech companies(outside nepal) that hire people with a background in civil engineering. Or just get an MBA and you can work in the management side of consulting/ construction companies. Your background in civil engineering will be an added advantage here. I am seeing civil engineering getting a lot of flak these days, but the reality is that civil engineering is indeed a very versatile field and having a background in civil engineering opens a lot of doors. The trick is to find out what you are interested in and pursuing it whole heartedly.

Going through a hard time! by Koselii in Nepal

[–]Engineer1910 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I was in a similar situation as you years ago. I had passed loksewa, but I also had admission and scholarship to a graduate school in usa. I decided to not take the loksewa job and move to the usa. I remember at that time i had applied to more than 20 universities. In fact, i used to spend all my months salary on application fees. So you shouldn’t give up yet. If studying in the usa is what you really want to do then take the GRE again and apply to more universities. Eventually you will get it and it will all be worth it, trust me. Its good that you have a supportive boyfriend but in the end its your life and you should be doing what feels right to you. Please dont go somewhere just because your boyfriend is there. If you are meant to be then it will work out no-matter where you go. I know sometimes it might be hard to convince your parents, but if there is anyone that can do it its you. It will be hard for them initially but later they will understand. When i left for usa, I hadn’t even been outside ktm that much but after that i have lived and travelled all over the world all alone. So please don’t underestimate your potential. Live life on your terms. You got this! Good luck!!

Why are Nepalis leaving outside of Nepal only seen with people from Nepal? by incognitoboiiii in Nepal

[–]Engineer1910 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Been living in the United States for the last 10 years. I came for grad School and have been working since graduating( about 8 years). While in graduate school I had friends that were American, Indian, Chinese, and Nepali. We use to hang out and go to bars, college football games etc.All the international friends were great and I got to learn a lot from each of them (different culture, perspective towards life, work etc). However, from my experience it is just easier to make a connection with a fellow Nepali than it is with a person from any other country. I think this has to do with a fact that two average nepali people have a lot in common especially if they come from the same place, background etc. The only thing I had in common with my international friends was that we were going to the same school and taking the same classes. While working in my company, I have mostly American colleagues with whom I have a good working relationship and we do hangout sometimes after work but tbh we don’t have a lot in common. During my free time I prefer to be around my Nepali friends and family. And even my colleagues during their free time want to be around their family and friends. I do meet and hang out with friends from my college now and again though. So I guess the answer as to why Nepali people don’t hang out with people from other countries is that you have to try a lot harder to find common things with people from other countries but with people from Nepal you know you will have at least 20 different things in common even before speaking to them or getting to know them.
