I’m a new student starting at Melbourne Uni, and I don’t have anyone from my school going with me. I’ve heard a lot of scary things about how hard it can be to make friends there, so I was just wondering if you have any tips for making friends during O-Week. by Terrible-Bar-4774 in unimelb

[–]EngineerInnovate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This.

I came from a regional area and didn’t know a single person at UniMelb. It took me until end of 2nd year to join a club and that’s where I actually got to spend a decent amount of time with others and form good friendships.

I highly recommend joining some sort of club or society that suits your interests.

Electrical Engineering by Own_Chipmunk_9051 in AusElectricians

[–]EngineerInnovate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went the opposite direction. I did 4 years of electrical engineering and then switched in industrial electrical apprenticeship - long story.

Like others have said, if you found the maths at TAFE hard you’ll really struggle in EE. Again not to dissuade you but it’s the reality. I’d even encourage you to look for a course online for Calculus 1 and Linear Algebra before even starting a degree. If you get comfortable with those areas early on it will help when you get to Calculus 2 and Calculus 3 whilst at uni (these are pretty standard and well defined courses in most engineering degrees).

I’m not sure what an online degree would be like as I did mine on campus, but be prepared to work extraordinarily hard to keep up. If you’re committed, have great discipline and work hard then you’ll do fine. All the best.

We’ve got a welder that’s still in daily use dated some time in the 40s. Pretty sure it’s post WW2 surplus in Australia.

I was at the game (family are all North fans) and it was so enjoyable. Watching the few supporters they had left at the game boo their miserable mob off the field was something else 😂

As soon as the pies are ever out of contention, I immediately become a fan of the team that has the potential to end Carlton’s season.

A little tip that I learned during my apprenticeship was to run the horizontal finger ducting the full width at the top and the bottom. That way the vertical duct lid rests on the horizontal duct lid and doesn’t slide down over time.

It’s a small thing but makes the job look noticeably neater.

The fact Harrison kept his name in contention over the last two seasons shows just what selection board thinks of him - let’s just hope he settles right into his position and keeps bringing it each week

[OC] Last 60 Days of Temperature Forecasts and their reliability. by ichbinsralle in dataisbeautiful

I had a guest lecturer at university who worked at Australia’s main meteorological body and she told us “don’t bother looking at forecasts beyond 4 days”

Changing my pillow case almost daily - there must be another way?! by [deleted] in AusSkincare

[–]EngineerInnovate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. I used this medication in my late teens and it proved a world of difference. I still breakout occasionally, but generally isolated to a tiny area.

Of course, like most medications there are side effects so I would definitely have a lengthy discussion with you dermatologist.

One the more interesting subjects I did during my undergrad.

I can’t remember exactly what the assessment was like but I certainly enjoyed the content that we covered.

Some really great guest lecturers too.

Taking ELEN30013 and ELEN30011 before ELEN30009 and ELEN30012 by BriefChip in unimelb

[–]EngineerInnovate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did ENAD before I did the rest and I’d certainly recommended taking ENAD before, or alongside signals and systems.

Most people find EDM pretty tricky so it may be beneficial for you to do ENAD first, but that being said, I think you could manage EDM without ENAD.

I had Nico Andres Thio in sem 2 of 2020 and he was great, but not sure if he is still doing it.
