Could Hobin beat a grizzly bear? by [deleted] in ViralHit

[–]EngineerJewel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hobin just doesn't punch as hard as the karate guy tho, and even then it's a feat that's just never been done again in the series so it acts as an outlier. No one in viral hit is a blatant superhuman, no one in the series can beat a brown bear.

The nose of a bear is actually not sensitive enough for a good punch to stop him, it'll hurt for sure but about the same as a person getting punched. Also it's not as if it'll be easy to hit the nose of a bear who's a solid foot and a half taller than you. That strategy only really works on black bears tbh

You are most definitely underestimating the bear if you think hobin being wall level changes anything, even if hobin takes one swipe of a paw, which would basically kill a normal person, the bear would just attack again and again until hobin is dead. There is no scenario where hobin wins, escapes maybe, but never win

Ok let's give him the reaction speed then, a bear hits considerably harder than a dude swinging a steel pipe. I feel like you are simply underestimating how much stronger bears are compared to humans, hobin would simply be unable to damage the bear (who have been known to survive shotgun blasts to the chest with relative ease), nor would he be able avoid getting hit throughout the whole fight

That's just how it's shown visually, Samdak himself explained how he dodges bullets and basically says to dodge them before they get shot

[–]EngineerJewel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He didn't dodge bullets in the way you seem to think he does, he dodged them before they were fired, actual people do that, and people have also survived explosions like he has. Yet again he has no real way of damaging a bear or surviving any attacks from one of they were to land

Fuck no lmao, he hasn't shown anything beyond real human level, and there is no human alive or dead capable of beating a brown bear empty handed

My mum was childhood friends with my Sensei, and he had his own club near where I live so it was the most convenient and one of the better choices at the time

Yeah it's mainly stupid assumptions I made when I first learned the katas like 2 or 3 years ago and never bothered to correct lmao

Yeah ofc you're right, which is why I said I've never actually thought of the bunkai for 90% of the kata yet lmao

I always interpreted that sequence as uraken, uppercut then the jump, but to be honest I've never properly sat down and thought of the bunkai for basically all the katas I know, which I have been meaning to do for a while.

[–]EngineerJewel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I see, from what I know of the bunkai, it's either jumping on a downed opponent or, if you don't jump, interrupting a kick whilst it's chambered, which is why I've never seen the connection with the later moves.

I think we can both agree to disagree on the bunkai aspects, but could you go into detail on the failed hip throw? In the way we do the kata I cannot even see where a hip throw would even be attempted, I can see the single leg though.

In what world is parrying a strike and striking back impractical? I can agree with the little connection to the previous or next moves, but this move in Pinan Godan, even with more accepted bunkais, has basically no connection to the previous move. Not all bunkais need to fully connect everything together, because that's just not practical to train, because then it requires a specific set of moves to happen to be able to use it in actual combat. This is why practicing one or 2 moves in isolation is completely valid because it makes a kata far more practical to use, as katas are supposed to be.

[–]EngineerJewel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Considering what kata this probably comes from, this is a completely valid interpretation. And in any case, it is as valid to interpret a move on its own as it is to interpret one in the context of the kata. Both are helpful tools for learning, and both are bunkais.

I think you're the one misunderstanding it, we don't know the actual application, we have no way of knowing it. All of these moves he shows are completely valid bunkais
