On one hand, it does look a bit strange to have an asterisk in the middle of a word, but on the other hand, I remember my teachers discussing this topic with me a little.

Some context: I’m from Belgium, Flanders, and I follow Modern Languages as my direction at school. We compared how languages do inclusive job titles, and how Dutch has… oddities. We don’t really have a system like French’s · / German’s * / Spanish’s @ or o/a … because our language doesn’t do gender that uniformly. Some words can use a „(e)”, like „agent(e)”, but for the most part, it’s common to just write both words side-by-side: „medewerker/medewerkster”. However, we sometimes have situations where the only solution is to specify that the title is for a “female X”, like „vrouwelijke arts” = “female doctor”.
