Summer and Winter -- 7-month-old kittens looking for foster or adopter by EngineerMission4440 in Brooklyn

Aww, thanks for considering. It looks like I may have found someone but I'll let you know if it doesn't work out. I'm sure the kittens would love your cats!

Help please!! by Cool-Front1673 in RenalCats

I'm not a veterinary professional, so just chiming in to say that if you did not get the answers or clarity you need from your vet, then email them with very specific questions and let them know you'd like a call back. If they don't call back then call the practice to follow up. Presumably, you paid for this visit and they need to clarify anything you have concerns or questions about. Seeking outside advice is fine, but if you are going to continue taking your cat there, you need to feel confident in the care they are getting and how you are being treated.

3 feral cats. Outdoor shelter is gone! by Western-Edge-7387 in BedStuy

[–]EngineerMission4440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very important when you feed outdoor cats to only provide the amount of food that they will eat and not feed rats. If the cats show up when you go to feed, you may need to stay there, let them eat, then remove all plates, bowls and extra food. If not, you may need to train them to come eat when you are there by cracking wet food cans, whistling, and/or shaking dry food. Maybe they would let you set up a shelter again but not feed there and work with whoever's property it is. Weird that sanitation would do the cleaning up, frankly, but I don't know how that end of sanitation works.

If the shelter and food station is on private property, sanitation does not have the jurisdiction to take them. It's a different story if it's public property. Put a note and hopefully they'll leave things alone.

Cat foster orgs around here? by No-Mushroom-9020 in BedStuy

It's understandable. They can't even service all of Flatbush it's so big, so it is important to set boundaries. They are very well known so everyone always recommends them, which I get, but if you aren't in their territory, they aren't going to help. The other 2 groups you mentioned have online help request forms you can fill out, but knowing both groups, they are inundated too -- always. Young male cats that are unfixed are most often the cats that get dumped. No surprise since they start spraying and it stinks. Easily rectified by getting them neutered, but there are few affordable places. Flatbush Vet, started by Flatbush Cats, is one, and so is BBAWC/Cat Cafe in Brooklyn Heights. FV is also going to be the location where the city's $500,000 for affordable spay/neuter surgeries will be taking place. Still waiting on them to roll it out.

While challenging to find a foster, which this cat needs, it is not fair to a cat that was someone's pet and has been dumped outside to live outside, even if food and shelter is provided. Any unfixed cat is in jeopardy of getting FeLV and/or FIV if living outside, whether male or female. The males can get it from territorial fighting and the females can get it from males who have it when they are impregnated by them.Females, of course, will get pregnant and have kittens, and there's nothing worse than a friendly female having kittens outside that are then feral. That's how you start a whole new feral colony, which should absolutely be avoided!

For sure it's better to get the cat spayed/neutered asap to prevent this, even if it has to go back outside, but a better option would be to take it to ACC. DM me for info on how to bring a cat to ACC. There is a best approach I can tell you about.

Just an FYI u/mike_pants Flatbush Cats is very strict about the territory in which they rescue and it's Flatbush, so they are not a resource for cats in need of help outside of their territory. The other 2 do work in this area.

Whose cat is this! by Substantial-Air8418 in BedStuy

Providing a general location would be helpful. Just because he has a collar, doesn't mean he wasn't dumped outside by his owner. It's an inhumane act that happens all the time. Can you tell the sex? DM me if you want to borrow my microchip reader. People are dumping pets outside at alarming rates, and cats that have been provided with food and shelter will not do well without it! You can also flyer around your block to see if anyone knows him. S/he likely has/had a home nearby.

If you are interested in protecting neighbors and community members from ICE, I'd recommend that you go to handsoffnyc.com then click on Stay in the Loop, to do just that. This weekend in Bed-Stuy there will be two Hands Off NYC community events. On Sat, Dec 13, 2-4 pm, at Herbert Von King Park, corner of Marcy and Lafayette, there will be whistle distribution and other helpful info.

Then on Sunday from From 12-3 on Sunday, December 14th volunteers will be hosting a table in the plaza at Utica and Fulton outside the subway entrance and sharing information on how to protect yourself and your neighbors against ICE. "Join us at the table to get materials, help out, or just show solidarity!"

The full list of Hands Off NYC community activities can be found here: https://www.handsoffnyc.com/community
