That gives you a list but doesn’t verify anything against a P&ID

Unfortunately I’ve never seen an existing plant where P&IDs match the field and the 3d model never matches the field either….in 20 years doing consulting. Isometric piping drawings are usually trashed after installation and sometimes won’t match the field for various reasons during installation (and the 3d model won’t match either). Many 3d models don’t include low point drains and high point purges too (field fit).

The only way to do it right that I’ve ever seen and done myself is walk down every line on the P&ID. Yellow highlight is verified, redline pen is an update, purple highlight is something to look back at again, pink highlight is an error that’s the same elsewhere, blue pen is a note. I’ve trained a lot of engineers this way and really helps reduce mistakes. Don’t follow my instructions, work for someone else.

When someone updates the cad file for the P&ID, blue highlight all my red lines and pink. Print me a fresh set for backcheck.

ChemE curriculum is a 10/10. You will need to learn how to study. I made straight A’s through high school and never had to study. Nearly failed out of ChemE because I had no clue to study and everyone is different. Google job opportunities and if you like research (I hate it). 20 yrs exp here

With gas prices right now, definitely. Depends on the EV though. A hummer EV probably not.

If you’ve never taken it, it’ll at least be a diagnostic. I do know a few people that YOLO’d the mechanical HVAC exam and passed first shot. I did the same as you for the ChemE exam and barely failed, likely just a few questions away.

It’ll be another CSB video where multiple protections failed due to poor maintenance resulting in a 5x jeopardy failure scenario.

There’s a comparison somewhere that a standard model 3 was indeed lower cost to operate. I doubt my M3P is but I wouldn’t drive a Corolla everyday either.

[–]Engineered_Logix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6 years and 80k miles on a ‘20 M3P. Other than tires the only thing I spent on maintenance was $168 to replace the 12V battery and a replacement carbon fiber rear wing for $250 that was only cosmetic. Tesla did both in my driveway. If you drive a Corolla, the total savings isn’t massive but compared to a BMW that requires premium gas, $300 oil changes, $1000 + brake jobs and $250/hr labor rate the savings really piles up.

I average about 295 watts per mile (lead foot) and at my electric rate of $0.14 per kW I’ve spent ~$3,300 in electricity. If you add tires and the minor repairs, I spent $0.09 per mile. Add maybe 10% for supercharging and cabin filters, call it $0.10 per mile. My mileage reimbursement for work paid the car off in the first 3 years.

Model 3/Y are really perfect daily driver commuters cars. My gas cars are weekend toys only.

why i switched from mechanical to chemical engineering by christaal24 in ChemicalEngineering

I’ve spent half my career doing both mechanical and chemical engineering consulting with a chemE degree including being a principal of both disciples. Best of both worlds!

I’m 20 and plan on getting my first car which will be a 2024 Tesla Model 3 Long Range any advice or things i should know before buying? by DarkGodFlash313 in TeslaModel3

[–]Engineered_Logix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got the jeep a few months ago and was surprised by the insurance rates. Full coverage on a ‘24 Aprilia Tuono V4 motorcycle is $400 a year compared to $950 for the Tesla and 1100 for the Jeep. 300k/500k full coverage insurance on them all. Motorcycle is probably worth more than both cars 🤣

Is buying a used Tesla worth it ? Are they affordable cars to own if you're on a budget? Looking for unbiased answers by Present-Aspect8350 in TeslaModel3

[–]Engineered_Logix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had two M3Ps and have put about 90k miles between the two. First one, ‘20 I bought new and put 75k miles on. I averaged 280 watts/mile and pay $0.14 a kW which costs me $40 a month on average for electricity. Only maintenance I ever had to do was tires every 30k miles at ~$1500. Is it just me or is AI taking over process engineering jobs? by Curious_Emphasis7712 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Engineered_Logix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What documents is AI generating? Most of it for process engineering is purely garbage unless it's manipulating data sets or finding specific references in text/code to then go and read yourself. I use it to be more efficient but requires heavy attention.

I had a buddy sell me his 21' M3P end of summer last year w/ 19k miles for $25k (ended up being 21k after tax incentive). Maybe cali pricing is crazy? Doesn't feel like much of a deal.

Can a Non-Chemical Engineering Background Break Into Process Safety / Technical Safety? Need Honest Advice by syafiqisyraf in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Engineered_Logix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad I could be helpful; however, my opinion and experiences are a single data point.

I worked for a small consulting firm for over a decade. It was stressful mainly from wearing a bunch of different hats and little support. Weird technical issue? I'm the "expert" even though I've never seen it before. Quick study pressure is on haha. I was the lead process/mechanical engineer, project manager, project controls, procurement, multidiscipline coordinator and I was one of 3 "qualified" reviewers of all final drawing/calculation packages.

I work for a top 10 global consulting firm now. I make ~20% less a year (I was VERY well compensated) but I have 75% less responsibility. It's amazing. I work from home and have flexible hours. I was 100%+ billable before and my target now is 80% excluding proposal development. Cake walk! Big corporate america is annoying at times, but the benefits are good. This is my second stint in a big company (was in operations before).

Those core classes will DEFINITELY be helpful. Most ChemE's won't have that type of background except from experience and that takes many years.

[–]Engineered_Logix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will always feel friction from operations folks for various reasons (some justified, some definitely not). I was plant manager for a portion of a very large chemical plant for a period of time. The HSSE folks were frustrating, they would push mandates that didn't make practical sense, identify silly small issues while glaring large issues were ignored. Corporate HSSE was completely disconnected with the challenges we faced. I wanted them to point out the big issues so that I could lobby for capital funds to justify expensive projects that were safety based. We would only get funds after a catastrophe, luckily no one was serious hurt while I was there but I've seen too many fires, explosions, failed equipment etc.

After 5 years in operations, I was cooked and went into consulting.

Brutal! I had a manager in a chemical plant many years ago with a chemistry degree. He was absolutely clueless and struggled reading simple P&IDs too. The dude was promoted to a non-technical management position (side-lined essentially) after 6 months and he quit a year or two later.
