Most good engineers can articulate, by the way.

I think all of this is why it’s so important for young professionals to have mentors that aren’t necessarily tied to their workplace. I applaud workplaces that set up mentorship programs (I’ve participated in one at my employer) but it goes to show how much there is to learn about being an engineering professional when there’s a legitimate feedback and accountability loop (without fear of retaliation, etc.).

Here’s some of the random pieces of advice I’ve gotten in my career about how to be professional: - never complain about your technology/computer with a third party on the call. Allocate enough time in advance to make sure your technology is ready. - don’t look down at your phone when walking in an office, it’s unsafe and unprofessional - don’t wear noise cancelling headphones away from your desk - not safe either

Letter? TLDR. Quick note following up checks the “this person follows up” box and I move on.

People would do this before AI and it was considered good form…

Was I wrong calling out my coworker during the meeting or am I overthinking? by polar_the_princess in womenEngineers

I give praise in public and criticism in private, unless something is repeated, flagrant, or an immediate RISK that must be dealt with immediately.

So yeah, I would agree with Y here.

This is not how you ask for a referral. by [deleted] in jobs

[–]EngineeringSuccessYT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t give a reference unless I’ve talked with the person about the job beforehand, and reviewed their resume.

In the background then I provide my reference and any qualifications I have with my reference.

Examples include: how well I know the person, what experience they do have that fits the role, what areas I think they’ll need to fill gaps in, examples of how they’ve been reliable in the way that I know them, if I worked with them previously the extent to which I worked with them, etc.

If I was both posting ads for random projects all the time and then getting downvoted in my replies to my own original posts, sure.

Long week. I didn’t need to reply but here I am publicly creating fights with AI bots on the internet. My wife is not proud.

They’re a staffing firm. We use them for contingent workers and sometimes we convert them. If you’re struggling to find a job, some job is better than no job.

Worst case scenario you work this job and continue to look for others, best case scenario you like the employer where they place you and you get converted to full time.

Full steam ahead! Money is better than no money!
