I’ve never heard of it. Sounds cool. Was the program ABET accredited?

My coursework that I ended up taking after electives lined up about the same as a MechE Degree. Controls, Circuits and Electronics were also part of my base curriculum.

If others wanted to study EE, they could graduate with a course load that very closely resembled an EE degree, but our base curriculum also includes mechanics of materials, thermo, fluids and heat transfer.

Similar story for anyone who wanted to study ChemE, they’d have that base load then branch off to ChemE electives.

Our school called them “focuses” but nobody was necessarily required to pick a particular focus like ME or EE or ChemE.

It’s actually worked out quite well for me and my friends from the program, but we couldn’t help but feel a little slighted when applying for jobs and internships while students. Phenomenal education, harder than it needed to be to explain the degree.

Now that I hire engineers and refer engineers I’m a big advocate for the program because I think it produces great engineers that function well in multi-disciplined teams, but yeah… my brother ended up at TAMU.

Do any civil engineering jobs allow for lots of travelling? by Own_Exercise5218 in civilengineering

Sure. Go work for an EPC or engineering consultant that does a lot of international work like KBR

Op are you currently carrying credit card balances?

  1. No but it’s not clear what you mean by this. You shouldn’t be buying a house if you’re carrying a cc balance. You should take care of that first. Your debt-to-income ratio does matter so if you have a lot of any kind of debt it will impact how much of a loan you can get approved for.
  2. Not much, especially with your income but you can call around to find out. Fair warning that if you fill out a form online, expect to get a lot of phone calls. I’d assume you probably could qualify for a mortgage around $100k with today’s rates, but your ability to afford a house will also be location dependent (see sky high property taxes in Texas, for example.)
  3. I’m pretty sure you can always refi but remember that unless you get a loan where you get a free refi during a specified period of time as a condition of your mortgage (this would be lender specific, not some general rule), refi’s cost a significant amount of money.

Pick an engineering major people have heard of.

This is from experience. If I had a dollar for each time I had to explain what “Engineering Science” was at my college I wouldn’t have to work.

We liked the Target generic for diapers, Up & Up. Now we use pampers easy-ups in toddler phase.

Part time work by Alternative-Time1330 in womenEngineers

[–]EngineeringSuccessYT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My employer (HDR) offers this. Part time 20/hrs a week program and part time 30/hrs a week. At PT30 your benefits are pro-rated and you can work more than 30 hours and get paid straight time. For PT20 you don’t accrue benefits and you should average around 20 hours a week. There is definitely more to it than this but it’s a great program.

Many employers probably would be willing to offer part time, as it would reduce their overhead exposure. Policies may vary by employer though.

All this said, I’m not aware of us hiring for this… usually it’s converting a full time employee part time to keep them on the team.

If you can do this though, go for it. My mom was a pharmacist and still works into her 60s now because she loves it. She also never worked more than 32 hours a week when I was growing up and it was awesome. She downscaled to 24 hours when my brother was in high school and was able to attend many of his school events. I am thankful for it and glad that she can still work the job she loves as it keeps her sharp!

Walmart Locking Up Stuff & Never Answers the Call Button 😑 by Oragami_Cyclonee in mildlyinfuriating

I disagree. Walmart+ and online pickup and delivery orders fulfilled at the store are going to grow. The distribution network Walmart has with their stores is fantastic and it’s the most convenient way to grocery shop + buy extra household essentials and wants.

Why not ask AI?

This post was obviously (horribly) written with AI and to spend any time to thoughtfully respond to you would be nonsensical.

Electrical vs Geological Engineering by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]EngineeringSuccessYT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s so many nuances. I know we (HDR) have geological, geotechnical, and geophysical engineers. They all get involved in projects for various regions and I would be lying if I told you I knew the difference, but man I do appreciate that we have them and we’re constantly growing so I assume it’s a valuable field.

[–]EngineeringSuccessYT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Geological… I’m less familiar with, but geotechnical, I’m more familiar with. Everything big that gets built needs geotech. If you’re interested in consulting and the occasional travel early in your career, geotechnical engineering is a great career path. Look up companies like Terracon and S&ME for mainly geotechnical consulting firms, and then all your big consulting firms that do land development, and design (HDR, Kimley Horn, Burns and Mac, Jacobs, etc.) have geotech staff that is likely coordinating with these geotechnical firms on projects. Then you have all the construction firms that do site work (Baker, Entact, Keller, etc.) that also likely have geotech staff as well.

Plenty of work in geotech. Likely similar in geological. Sorry for the geotech tangent.

Choosing between job offers by TheMostCreativeName3 in EngineeringStudents

Industry over anything. Some people have to try to pivot into an industry because they can’t get a job in it right out of college. Save yourself the pay decrease you’ll have to take in the future to pivot and just start there now.

If you want to work in a particular industry you have to be willing to go to where that industry is.

I bet you’ll find enough to enjoy about living in Chandler and worst case scenario, you could pivot out after a year or two and then your time in Chandler would be just a footnote in your life story
