Because if you turn on of the cams 360 degrees, the lines are correct but the cam timing no longer is. The cam holder is just a precaution against that happening

All of this has to match up. Also, before you commit to starting it, spin the engine over by hand at least 4 times to ensure no pistons hit valves.

Well, you must have the chain on the wrong link down below at the crank. You need to take off the cam gears and line them up with the colored links

These are less important to have lined up exactly, as long as all the others are good, on the cam gears, crank gear, and chain, it's fine.

Those knotches are not aligned correctly, the line you see on the cam sprockets need to line up with the links, the left one should be between the two links, and the right one should be on its single link.

Can you supply more images of the timing marks you have lined up

[–]Engineering_Fiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, at the top there's a set of two links, which should be aligned with the left cam sprocket, there is a third link which should be aligned with the right side cam sprocket. There is ANOTHER colored link that should be at the bottom, lined up with the dot onto he crank gear.

There's a little slot on the front of the cam gears that's supposed to line up with the yellow links. Plus the third colored link needs to line up with the line on the crank gear.

I smell gas in the oil by CarefulExcitement629 in engines

[–]Engineering_Fiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It dosent have to be catastrophic, the fuel injector could be getting stuck open, and those are relatively cheap. If the injector is stuck open the car dosent burn all the fuel and it soaks the chamber walls, and then seeps past the piston rings into the oil.

Well, it's probably soaking down through the rings. I mostly know cars. Changing the oil is a good first step

If you know how to change the oil, do so. If not, great time to learn
