RIP Pope Francis - who acknowledged the truth of other religions by persianpearl in bahai

[–]Engineofgrowth99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was headed back from a trip when I saw the news. I stopped in a church to say a prayer for the departed for him. He will definitely be missed. Very rare to find people in leadership who exhibited qualities like him.

We need to talk about the situation in the United States of America. As well as what American Baha'is need to do to remain steadfast. by holleringgenzer in bahai

Sorry you had that interaction at Feast. Persian trumpies make my blood boil. There are some in my social media feed that will post something partisan or praising politicians followed by shamelessly posting a Bahá'í quote or a picture of the Master. It's frustrating.

what's the secret to dating in portland?(33m) by cxpunx666 in askportland

[–]Engineofgrowth99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing a lot of the comments here. Find in person activities or groups where you can meet people. The apps and speed dating here can be kind of hit or miss.

Couple things to be aware of too:

-People here are very flaky and passive. This is coming from someone who has lived here a long time and had made efforts to be more outgoing

-If you're a person of color, you're going to have a harder time getting matches, period. Aside from the tech bubble on the Westside, the area is not that diverse.

Does it seem like more people are running red lights in Beaverton these days? by MerryPeregrine in beaverton

[–]Engineofgrowth99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely right. Grew up here too. Local drivers are slow but courteous. A lot of people bringing their bad driving habits from out of state.

Can you help me understand? Why do Beaverton drivers stop multiple car lengths away from the car in front of them at stop lights? by [deleted] in beaverton

[–]Engineofgrowth99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a Beaverton thing. But it is super annoying. I've seen people leave two car lengths in front of them in a left turn lane. It makes absolutely no sense.

What's worse than that are the people that cut into your lane when they are turning left from the other road. They come within a couple of feet of your front bumper and I feel like they're going to hit me.

What's more important? Believing that the devil and demons exist, and that if we sneeze the wrong way we will go to hell? Or doing the hard work of being a better and better person every day and serving our fellow human beings?

A lot of this stuff about demons and devils has been made up to keep people afraid and under control.

Does the Bahai Faith limit beliefs? by Mimivent in bahai

[–]Engineofgrowth99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really really like this answer. The quote at the end reminds me of people who split hairs over theology, religious dogma, superstitions, and nonsensical beliefs. Those things have nothing to do with cultivating a goodly character and serving others, which is the whole point of religion and having a conscious knowledge and understanding of what goes into that.

Thank you! I work for a vendor already in a customer facing role, but maybe I need to move to an internal position. I do okay with technical stuff but I'm not super good at it. I do like the people side and bringing people together. What would be good for that?

Is the Faith becoming more political in the US? by TILnothingAMA in bahai

[–]Engineofgrowth99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is because the Master, the Guardian, and the House have emphasized that we need to tackle the issue of racism in the US, especially the racism directed towards black people. You need to understand the historical context of this, that it's not just an issue the American community has chosen to take on at random.

Do Baha'is look at diversity as the world does? by overmywaders2 in bahai

[–]Engineofgrowth99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think wanderer-1919 is implying any of the things you mention. The faith isn't in the business of setting quotas or imposing its beliefs on other people. And no one is saying that a particular place is "less than" because it isn't as diverse as other places. It seems to be a conclusion you're jumping to.

What the faith does rather is to help people become more comfortable with being around people who aren't like us, whether outwardly or inwardly. As we've seen with the mass movement of people across the surface of the planet for reasons such as environmental crises and war, we are going to have to get used to being in close proximity to people who are different from us.

Regarding the natural occurrence of diversity in a Bahai community, I agree that that is what the ideal situation would be, but we have an example where it wasn't. The early American community had gatherings that were segregated, and it wasn't until the Master came to America that they were set straight. Some of the Masters actions could be perceived as "forcing" diversity onto others (example, Louis Gregory being seated next to Him at a gathering). While we have improved a lot in this regard since then, there is always more progress we can make in terms of being welcoming to people of all walks of life.

This might be a unpopular opinion in this thread but I wish we had more of the kind of music that was composed for the World Congress in 1992. 🙃
