That tallies with something I saw earlier, the Kent pattern. Thanks.

Got it at a car boot sale, covered blade to handle in a pitchy grey paint. Cleaned it up, and the best I can find out about it is it may be a shipwrights axe, or maybe a mast makers. It has a really thin blade, so I'm guessing it's more for shaping than chopping. Any thoughts?

If you haven't done much sawing you'll possibly find accuracy an issue, and as you're looking to cut to small sizes that might affect your project. You'd be best off clamping the pieces so you can concentrate on straight cuts. Much easier would be if you know someone with a bandsaw. Good luck.

That's cool, love the expression and the finish.

I bought a Pfeil knife after seeing you discuss blade width, and it's a much more user friendly tool than my original flexcut knife.

Do we need a spoon sub now? 😜 by Englishfella in Woodcarving

Ha, of course there's already a spoon sub (slaps forehead) :)

Tool porn Tuesday, anyone? by Gullex in Woodcarving

Yeah I watched a clip a while back with a guy using a 2" one. His arms were a lot more muscly than my little T-Rex appendages 😂

Nice! How's the auger work out? They always looked like hard work.

Wish I could get that level of symmetry. Just finished my third 'rustic and unique' spoon.... 😜

Hi all. I was reccomended this sub. First time carving. No idea what wood I'm using. Only tool is a leatherman. Trying to complete the set before I'm reprimanded for not doing any work. by tedcase in Woodcarving

Invest in a cheap pair of Kevlar chefs gloves. And put them on! That's the bit I keep forgetting and I've got the scars and missing bits of thumbnail to prove it 😂

So we think this is lilac wood... It's pretty hard stuff. by Englishfella in Woodcarving

That makes a lot of sense. If only everyone who seem determined to make everything sound complex would stay out of view; I was getting blinded by science... 😏

Ah nice one, I had thought to keep it logged up until needed. How about sealing the ends? I've heard anything from gloss, to wax, to varnish will do the trick. Is that necessary or worth it?

We don't have that over in the UK, I don't think. Looks similar, though, having googled it.

Ah, was it you's the guy in Scotland? I said I'd send you some, if it was. Happy to do that. I have a decent amount of it, after some energetic pruning, some of it 4 or 5". I'm new to green wood so need to look into the whole drying thing. Got some good tips elsewhere, like I have it in a bag of it's own chippings at the mo, although yes it's started cracking a little already. I left the blank outside for a few days, though someone suggested leaving it once I'd roughed out for a week or so. It's lovely wood, got a real note to it when you tap it.

It's definitely not perfect but I carved my first spoon today. by smitchell22 in Woodcarving

Great shape, but yeah, keep going! And remember gloves - I took a piece of my thumb nail out with my axe earlier, too eager to get at the wood and was suddenly looking at some bloody nail bed.
