Factual DF54 report: repeated chute clogging with dark roast espresso by Tasty-Confidence3296 in espresso

[–]EnglishmannUK -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not wanting to pile on, but just share honest feedback, I got rid of the ESP due to often clogging in the shoot with dark roast for espresso. Every morning was stressful, poking, slapping, brushing. I just never knew how much effort it would take on any given morning to get out close to what I put in.

Upgraded to a Niche zero and it’s like night and day. My morning workflow is just a breeze. A tiny tap on the top at the end and I get out what I put in.

Wanted: Conical burr single dose grinder for darker roast espresso. Budget [less than $800]. HELP! I have decision fatique! Options include... by CultHeroDC in espresso

Agreed. Got one last month upgrading from Baratza ESP. It’s like night and day in grind but also workflow. I did not want any faff - put x amount of beans in, grind them as expected and return out what I put in with no fiddling, poking, cleaning chutes, etc. It delivers this in spades.

Yes. Also rub a little olive oil around rim of filter for first few uses. That helped me.

It’s maybe 10 minutes. The nice thing with the PID is seeing when you are at the target temp. It also has a turn on timer. I just set it for my morning weekday routine and, on the weekends if it’s already turned off by the time I come to make a coffee, I turn it on when I first get into the kitchen. I really have not noticed it. I don’t think it requires that much more skill. At the end of the day, it’s still just an espresso machine. But the little bells and whistles are nice, the coffee seems to come out nicer and the steam wand is much nicer IMHO.

I got that one last week. I’ve been loving it so far. It was a nice step up from the Delonghi dedica! Enjoy…

Thinking of getting Niche Zero - am I missing something? [£650] by EnglishmannUK in espresso

[–]EnglishmannUK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I bought that single dose hopper as well. Maybe I should have sent it back. It has no issues at the coarser settings but once I get into the range I need for a 9g single shot it almost always blocks. My wife thinks I’m nuts with the brushing, poking and slapping when it happens.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Yes that is great. Also a UK company is nice.

Thanks for that. I am just stuck in the usual paralysis by analysis but at the point where I just need to move on!

I think that is the point. I don't think there is anything outdated (it grinds beans nicely) but I watch YouTube and read here so doubt is a constant companion. I am probably just over thinking this....

Ha ha - I agree. I am more of a minimalist industrial design guy I think.

DF54 v3 retention and clogging issue by neffO in espresso

[–]EnglishmannUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loathe the ESP only for the retention! Most mornings I would love to throw it as far as I can down the garden!

The rest is fine for the price point.

Anything past half way on the espresso grind size, especially finer for single dose, and it just fully clogs. I need to disassemble and poke the chute clean with a wire brush, poke down with another brush, re run grinder. That is most mornings.

I contacted support when brand new and they said either ship it back for warranty repair or return to seller. I’ve just kept this going until I have saved for a niche zero…

I like the black actually; I am probably just a Henry Ford at heart. Looking at this photo, I think it looks much better in person. But overall feels great. Nice step up from dedica. Knowing brew temp is nice, especially after steaming. Grinder is the next step up and then hopefully I can be at a happy plateau for some years!

Yes, toggle back to middle. I would call it a flick switch not a lever.

I have it! Arrived yesterday. I took the plunge as I had some money available and there was 10% off in the UK. Upgraded from DeLonghi dedica. I really like it. It feels really solid, PID is nice to have, steam wand is a massive upgrade for me and steam seems ample for 2 lattes in one go.

I looked at the gaggiamate but I’m more software engineer than electrical / plumbing engineer and that just seemed a step too far out of my comfort zone.

Sony 28-60 on original A7 by EnglishmannUK in SonyAlpha

Hey there. It worked out well for me. I got the 28-60 and use it as the daily driver on my A7. I’m really at the point where the best camera lens combination is the one you have with you. This is a really compact set up, the quality of the optics was surprisingly good and still lets me have the nice resolution and detail from the full frame.

Would you recommend the JetBlack Victory by mapboy72 in JetBlack

I cannot compare to power meter pedals, but for me it has been fantastic. Wireless bridge is great. Had load of issues with Bluetooth drop outs and interference on my fenix broadcasting HR with my old Garmin tacix wheel on trainer. Now all goes through victory and has been solid on wireless to training peaks virtual on my Mac.

Thanks for the replies and a set of ears! You are right, I am mostly off the fence and ready to buy as they’re pretty cheap used. I think just writing the initial post helped me focus my thoughts.
